The start of Balham's Literary Festival 2019 was marked by a successful author reading and signing, here last night at the Oxfam Bookshop, supported by the kindness of Dulwich Books. Yara Rodrigues Fowler, debut writer of Stubborn Archivist gave a very interesting talk before some thirty people in conversation with editor Rhiannon Smith. Described as a lyrical reflection of growing up in a Brazilian-British household, Stubborn Archivist tells of finding one's space within different cultures and of learning to live in a traumatised body. Books were bought, snacks were snacked, and a good time was had by all. With the end of Volunteers' Week it's a good time to say a big thank you to the 30-odd who diligently help us out here at Balham, sorting, pricing and serving - thereby helping to reduce poverty. Your hard work and and dedication has helped make the shop a continuing success, We salute your efforts and hope you enjoyed the cream cakes and fruit! Here, at Balham, like in other Oxfam shops, we get donations large and small, through different ways and means. Recently, those opening up first thing found 15 or so small packets of books, each secured with its own neatly knotted cord. Sadly though, not brown paper packages, tied up with strings. Now that Christmas is out of the way it's that time of the year to make New Year resolutions. One could be to volunteer with your local Oxfam shop where, especially during the week, we need help and support from those who enjoy making friends, learning new skills and doing something worthwhile. Shifts are available morning or afternoon and have a suggested minimum of two hours. Some come in once a week, others like it so much they do more. The choice is yours. As you might imagine, we get all sorts of books kindly donated to us here at Balham. Out of the thousands we receive, a few discoveries are naturally more exciting than the rest. This month we've had the surprise of finding very early editions of F Scott Fitzgerald's Tender is the Night, Nabakov's Lolita and The Ballad of Reading Gaol by Oscar Wilde. But the standout so far this month is a signed copy of The Front Page, in its 1928 first edition. Hecht's work is his rarest an...d most important play, and the basis for three films including the classic screwball comedy "His Girl Friday," with Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell in 1940. With an inscription to fellow journalistic luminary Floyd Gibbons (who also has independently signed and dated the book) by both Hecht and co-author Charles MacArthur, this valuable item will most likely be auctioned. At Balham like all Oxfam shops we always find ourselves especially busy at Christmas. Here, for instance, is the recent crowd hovering around our children's section, where a two-for-one on most titles still applies.
