About Oxford Radical History Tours

This walking tour explores the radical history of the university city of Oxford

Oxford Radical History Tours Description

Radical Walking Tour of Oxford - 800 years of struggle.

This tour covers the history of radicalism in Oxford, from the Levellers in the English Civil War, through the Ranters, Percy Shelley, Oscar Wilde, both William Morrises (the revolutionary socialist and the Mosley-supporting motor boss), the Irish revolutionary James Connolly's visits at the turn of the last century, the battle against Oswald Mosley's fascists and support for the republican side in the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s, strikes and the growth of radical trade unionism in the city's car industry, and the tradition of radical history and politics, especially at Ruskin College, up to the miners' strike of 1984-85 and everything in between.

Ciaran Walsh is an experienced and highly engaging tour guide, with a wealth of knowledge and commitment to preserving and continuing Oxford's radical traditions.

Tours generally last around two hours and are on Sunday starting at 1pm from the steps of the Clarendon Building on Broad Street (near the Bodleian Library). Advance booking is essential by phoning 01865723604.

The recommended price is £10 per person - £5 for unemployed and students, though group rates can also be negotiated.

Tours, especially for groups, can also be arranged at other times.

Ciaran also does an additional tour of Jericho, the old working class and industrial district of Oxford. Contact 01865723604 for further details.

A hearty Socialist Greetings from Oxford's despairing but ebullient revolutionaries. Defiance is in order, in view of the catastrophe that has just occured, which reveals the degredation and depravity of this shit modernity. A better world is possible, and we will make it! Love, Peace and Solidarity

Very important commemoration coming up of the first Women's Liberation Conference held in the UK in 1970, centred on Ruskin College, Walton Street; back in the days when Ruskin was the platform and fountainhead of radical politics and scholarship in Oxford. Growing out of the History Workshop Movement, the women involved, many of whom will be involved in the 50th anniversary event, issued a set of demands which are still far from being met and provided a foundation for egalitarian feminist politics and debate thereafter.

Seeing as the Blond Buffoon of Brexit is about to become prime Minister, I think it's about time that everyone found out about good old fashioned rioting: like in 1830, when the people of Oxford and surrounding areas banded together to foil the designs of evil enclosing toffs during the Otmoor Riots

Performing Captain Swing, Daemon of Direct Action at Oddball Festival on Saturday (and celebrating afterwards!) Swing was written by that wonderful Jericho personality; the late, great Heathcote Williams, anarchist poet, actor, writer, activist and artist. Surely Heathcote deserves a proper memorial in the area. A young graffiti artist we met at the festival is keen to work on a large graffiti art montage as Heathcote was one of the pioneers of modern graffiti art in this country in the 70s Come on the Oxford Radical History Walking Tour on Sunday 30th June 2019, meeting at the old Ruskin College site on Walton Street at 11am, to find out more about working class and bohemian Jericho
