About Oxfordshire Animal Sanctuary

The Oxfordshire Animal Sanctuary admits & rehomes over 500 animals every year. We provide a refuge for animals who have been mistreated, neglected & abandoned.

Oxfordshire Animal Sanctuary Description

The Oxfordshire Animal Sanctuary admits & rehomes over 500 animals every year. Since opening in 1967, we have proudly managed to help over 25, 000 animals find their forever home.

At any one time, we have around 60 dogs, 90 cats and kittens plus a number of rabbits and guinea pigs. We also care for our permanent guests of goats, a horse and a little Shetland pony.

We were founded to be inclusive, understanding and a place where any animal was welcome.

Many of our animals come to us from difficult backgrounds. Some arrive with acute behavioural needs and some have immediate medical needs. We deal with each case individually and start by earning their trust and understanding their needs.

We hold our โ€™non-destruction policyโ€™ as a core principle for our work. This means that we will never put a healthy animal down and work to find each one a forever home.

Where this is not possible, due to behavioral issues for example, OAS is their home and our staff and volunteers give them as close to a petโ€™s life as possible. They are our sponsor animals.

In less than three weeks Rufus will have been looking for a forever home for a whole year ๐Ÿ˜ฟ
Rufus has been with us since September 2017, sadly Rufus is overlooked due to him being diabetic this includes the fear of needles.
Yes this will require 1 injection twice daily and a controlled diet, but we can help with teaching potential adopters how to do the injections, itโ€™s not as difficult as people think and Rufus is so well behaved when being injected.
... OAS may be able to help with the cost of medication as long as adopters remain with our vets in Bicester or Waddesdon.
Rufus is fun loving and wants to be on the go all the time, he loves chasing his toys and this is a fantastic way to make a forever bond with him ๐Ÿ’–
We think Rufus deserves to finally be the one to leave for his forever home, he checks the board frequently to see if his name has been added to the Cats reserved list ๐Ÿ˜ข
Please click on the link below to see if you maybe ideal for Rufus:

๐Ÿ’– Golden oldies in need of a forever home please help ๐Ÿ’–
Imagine being 20 years old and losing all you have ever known ๐Ÿ˜ข
Sadly Georgina & Tiffany are searching for a new forever home, we know this is a huge ask as both girls have been diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism ๐Ÿ˜” but both are fantastic at taking their medication ๐Ÿ˜Š
... OAS may be able to help with the cost of medication as long as adopters remain with our vets in Bicester or Waddesdon.
Whilst some maybe put off by their age, we can only reassure people that the rewards of helping these two in their senior years will be hugely rewarding ๐Ÿ’–
We know we have the best supporters we could possibly ask for, so please share to get the word out there and hopefully find Georgina and Tiffany a wonderful home ๐Ÿ˜ป

Hello, I'm Roger and just look at my handsome faceโ€ฆ
๐Ÿ’” I'm STILL looking for a forever family...CAN YOU ADOPT ME? ๐Ÿ’”
I'm a gorgeous 4-year-old American Akita boy who came to the Sanctuary after I sadly found myself in the dog pound. ๐Ÿ˜ฅ
... I was an un-microchipped stray so unfortunately, thereโ€™s no history on me. I like to see it as enigmatic, or your chance to make up a glamorous back story about a police witness protection programme. ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ
He is very typical of the breed and is incredibly strong-willed. He is, however, a very food motivated dog, which helps with his training. He has a great temperament, and really likes the company of people. He particularly enjoys a good cuddle and fuss with his main kennel carer. ๐Ÿ•
Because we donโ€™t have any history on Roger, we are unable to rehome him with children or other animals.
He would benefit from an owner who has experience of Akitaโ€™s and/or large breed dogs and their breed characteristics.

CAN SOMEONE GIVE ME A LOVING FAMILY?
๐Ÿถ Are you able to adopt a cheeky little girl with bundles of character? ๐Ÿถ
Jess is very popular among our volunteer walkers, she is so much fun to be around and keeps everyone smiling! ๐Ÿ˜
... Jess is a 6-year-old Jack Russell Terrier-X
She loves running around and exploring her surroundings, and is happy to settle down for a cuddle after a good play with her carers. โค๏ธ
Jess can get over excited very quickly and can be reactive towards other dogs when out walking; however, she is undergoing training help her learn to calm down with voice commands. She is very responsive to her training and new owners will need to be willing to continue working with her in the home and out and about. ๐Ÿ‘Œ ๐Ÿถ ๐Ÿถ
Jess is looking for a home with people who can help her learn to relax and calm down, but also make sure that she has plenty of exercise and things to keep her quick terrier mind engaged.
Due to her excitable behaviours and limited history, we have on Jess, we recommend that she lives in an adult only home (16+).
Jess would also like to be the only pet in the home as she doesnโ€™t like to be around other dogs or cats.
Find out more about Jess here. We'd love you to meet her soon! ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ• STILL SEEKING MY FOREVER FAMILY - ZUNI! ๐Ÿ•
๐Ÿ’– Zuni is a lovely 6 year old lad with a big heart. ๐Ÿ’–
He is a big boy, and just loves the company of people. He can come across as a little timid at first, but he makes friends with people easily. ๐Ÿ˜
... As he has settled into a routine, his character is shining through, and he is such a funny and lovable dog.๐Ÿคฃ
He has been very well loved and looked after in his previous home, so is now looking for a new home to call his own again. ๐Ÿ’”
Despite his knee needing physio, Zuni is a playful boy and loves to skip around the yard with you. He craves human company, so would suit a home where he isnโ€™t left for long periods of time on his own. ๐Ÿถ

AMENDMENT TO OXFORD MAIL ARTICLE ๐Ÿ“ฐ
Just to clear up any confusion about our Open Day tomorrow, regrettably no animals will be available to be viewed for adoption due to the sheer volumes of people attending the annual event. If you are considering adopting a rescue pet, please do pay us a return visit another day, during our normal visiting hours and we will be delighted to introduce you to our residents ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿฐ
... Our summer Open Day is an opportunity for families to get out in the sunshine and have some fun ๐Ÿ˜ƒ There will be live music, childrenโ€™s games, a tombola, and plenty of food and drink to go around. Not forgetting ice creams of course! ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿฆ
So if you are about tomorrow afternoon (1:30 - 4pm) please do pop in and see us. Our resident goats will definitely be ready to show off and grab the limelight as you wander up our drive! ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ˜

๐Ÿ˜ป 20,000 Thank You's! ๐Ÿ˜ป
Thanks to each and every one of our 20k+ followers - what an amazing milestone! ๐Ÿ‘
We've doubled the number of animal lovers following the Sanctuary in the last year, but we've still only got 250 monthly donors/sponsors in total. ๐Ÿ˜ฟ
... Unfortunately, this means that 98.8% of our lovely followers are not donors.
If just 5% of our followers gave us a small amount each month - the future of our animals would be safe.
Can you find just ยฃ10 a month to support us? (That's not even a coffee per week!)
https://oxfordshireanimalsanctuary.org.uk /donate/
Without your generosity, our animals canโ€™t get the food, veterinary care and support they need to live a happy, healthy life.
Your donation helps us provide a refuge for the most vulnerable dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs who have been mistreated, neglected, abandoned or are unwanted.

๐Ÿ“ฆ๐Ÿ˜ฟ Mum & Kittens - Dumped in a Box... ๐Ÿ“ฆ๐Ÿ˜ฟ
Many of the animals we care for come from unfortunate backgrounds and sadly, this story is no different. If you're a donor to the Sanctuary - then you just helped save the lives of this beautiful feline family. ๐Ÿ˜ป
Please donate:https://oxfordshireanimalsanctuary .org.uk/donate/
... This week, someone dumped several young cats and several 3-week old kittens in a cardboard box, in a field. ๐Ÿ™€
Luckily, a kind person saw the box and quickly took them to the fantastic The Hart Veterinary Centre in Bicester & Aylesbury.
They had immediate care and were treated for parasites. The vets then called us for help.
They are now in one of our quarantine rooms, being cared for by Sanctuary staff. The pictures are of this awesome mum and her three kittens. (The other cats made it through their ordeal just fine too)
Please note that some of these pictures were taken before the flea dirt had been combed out. They are flea free now! ๐Ÿ˜ฝ
๐Ÿ‘ Thanks very much to all our amazing donors. Without you, we wouldn't be able to help cats and kittens who've been so thoughtlessly put into these awful situations. They will have a much better future now. ๐Ÿ‘
Unfortunately, this is not a one-off situation. We've seen this many times before.
If you're able to become a regular donor for as little as ยฃ5 a month, you'll be saving many animals from this kind of mistreatment. ๐Ÿ™

Here at the Sanctuary we are firm believers that any dog, be it a rescue dog in a kennel or a pet dog in a home, needs not just regular physical exercise but adequate mental stimulation too. So we are forever trying to find new and exciting ways to keep our residents happy and occupied, when they are not on their daily walk. ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿพ
This is proving even more important during the recent heatwave because we are only able to exercise the dogs for a very short period of time, and whi...lst it is not too hot.
We thought we'd share some pictures with our supporters of some of the ways we have been keeping our dogs both entertained and cool.
A special Thank You to all of our lovely donors that have gifted us products from our amazon wishlist, such as cool mats, Kongs, and Busy Buddys. As you can see, they are greatly appreciated ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
If you would like to make a donation to help us continue to provide our animals with ever more enrichment, please click on this link: https://oxfordshireanimalsanctuary.org.uk /donate/

What a wonderful place. We have had three cats from you over the years. Kedi, Feebee and Molly, who my son has had for just over a week. She is settling in well. My 2 current cats are Callie (who I got as kitten locally) and Donut, a huge ginger who moved in in December without invite!! He was chipped and his owners didn't want him back.

User

We have just adopted a cat and the staff was so lovely and very helpful and so kind and have time to stop and answer questions and give tips to help with the new cat settling into her new home. Thanks for everything.

User

We have 2 beautiful dogs, both from OAS. The staff are so fantastic, and caring,

our Spirit and Archie are a joy to own, and we are forever grateful to the OAS.

User

This is a brilliant local charity which has been rehoming animals for many years now. I know this as my wifeโ€™s family adopted their dog when she was a child and could not have been more complimentary about OAS.

User

The Go-to place in Oxfordshire for rehoming pets. What great people they are. Anyone looking for a dog/cat or any pet should start here. And if you are an animal lover please donate monthly it's so important they get funding.

User

My partner and I visited in the hope of becoming first time dog owners and OAS helped make this a reality! They were incredibly helpful in terms of guidance and information making us feel both prepared and really understand what responsibility we were taking on. After a few visits to OAS plus a home visit from the staff, we are now fortunate to say we have quite possibly the best dog in the world (Bear ๏ฟฝ) and couldnโ€™t be happier with the new addition to our family! We cannot stress enough what a fantastic job OAS do and will forever be grateful!

User

Iโ€™ve adopted 4 cats from here very successfully over the past few years. They really care about the animals and take the time to find the right owner for the right pet.

User

I love the team, the work they do and everything they stand for. I have no problem donating items and money to this great local charity.

User

I have recently adopted the gorgeous Patch from OAS. After a recommendation from a friend who also adopted her Cat here, I thought it would be worth playing them a visit and Iโ€™m so glad I did.

They made the whole adoption really straight forward, they obviously take amazing care of all the animals, and it was apparent to me that all staff are 100% committed to these animals. All staff were extremely friendly and helpful, always ready to answer my questions.

Thank you for all your hard work, Patch is a really happy and healthy boy and that is all down to you for taking the most amazing care of him.

User

I have not had reason to work alongside the animal sanctuary in terms of animals but I have heard lots of good stories about them. I had never had a dog before we got our Labrador Alfie 11 years ago and as I had children at home I decided to get a dog from the best and most responsible breeders I could have hoped for. If in the future I am in a position to get a second dog, I will definitely get in touch as I would like to rescue a senior dog. I have given 5 stars as literally everyone I have spoken to about them is really positive about their experience.

User

I have adopted a couple of dogs from OAS over the past years. And I have always found them very helpful. I would highly recommend.

User

I contacted OAS when we were trying to rehome our rescue dog as he could not cope with our local environment. Our dog did not come from OAS but I contacted them for advice at what was a very difficult time. They were so kind and helpful. We did manage to rehome our dog and he is doing very well in his new environment. As we have young children it would be very difficult for us to adopt a rescue dog again so we now have a puppy but we wanted to support the great work that OAS do so we sponsor one of their forever dogs. I wish places like OAS didnโ€™t have to exist but Iโ€™m very glad that they do.

User

Have volunteered here in the past and can not fault the staff, commitment or facilities.

Also, through work we often have to help customers re-home animals and OAS never fail to assist, even when more well known charities do.

The animals are very well looked after & good homes are always sought for them.

Keep up the good work team! x

Did my first stint as a volunteer cat socialiser last week and very impressed with the cattery facilities. Large pens with plenty of toys and beds as well as having plenty of room to move freely myself.

The staff I met were very friendly and knowledgable letting you know each cats tendencies which was very helpful in avoiding bites and scratches because you are doing something that cat doesnโ€™t like.

Having volunteered for several years at another charitable organisation, I find OAS very refreshing in their approach and am really looking forward to volunteering again on Monday.

User

Been volunteering as a Cat Socialiser for five months and never not had a good day. The staff are dedicated people with a great love for their charges. Always sad to see the cats leave, but of course that's what we are all working towards - to see them go to loving (and hopefully permanent) homes.
