When I started making perfume I had a dream that one day my perfumes might possibly be reviewed by Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez, two of the most esteemed and insightful fragrance critics in the industry.
All of the fragrances from Papillon were thoughtfully and brilliantly critiqued in the new book Perfumes The Guide 2018 and I feel incredibly honoured to see my perfumes here.
Buy the book. It’s a brilliantly clever and witty read covering 1,200 recent releases from the mains...tream giants of the perfume world, and also niche and artisan.
Proving that dreams can come true, here is Luca Turin’s review of Dryad which received ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Business of Perfume: Artisan as the New Niche by Claire Vukcevic for her incredible blog Take One Thing Off.
If you’re confused by the words ‘niche’ or ‘artisan’ within the fragrance industry then this great piece of writing will clear up any confusion between these terms, and highlights the true artisans in the business.
Thanking Claire for her writing, I’m honoured by her words and to be in such great company with the other brands featured here.

For every obstacle, every challenge and every set back that we naturally encounter as a small business, there are, in equal part, twinkles of light and moments of repose; these achievements can be big, sometimes they are small but these are the moments we live for at Papillon. Today, very exciting news reached the Papillon studio. While we are desperate to share it, we think a picture speaks a thousand words. To Tania Sanchez and Luca Turin – for your countless contributions to the perfume world, for your inspiring, humorous and wise words and for your careful consideration of each of our perfumes, we thank you.

On this glorious summers day we are celebrating the four year anniversary of Papillon Artisan Perfumes. We are so proud to share this special day with you and continue to be humbled by the kind words and continued support of our customers.
Four years on and our perfumes remain truly artisan; conceived, constructed, packaged and delivered with a promise of integrity, quality and luxury. The launch of our new perfume later this year will be no different and we hope it will be met with the same excitement and positivity of its predecessors.
We ask our supporters to raise a toast, wherever they are in world, for without you Papillon may have remained a pipe dream. Cheers 🥂🍾🥂

Tobacco Rose. 🌹
Bulgarian Rose. Rose de Mai. Oakmoss. Beeswax. Hay. Ambergris.
"Anthropomorphised throughout literature and poetry the illustrious rose is immortally bound to its sweet, old fashioned and pretty stereotype. Tobacco Rose combines the scent of overblown roses with rich, mineral notes, as though one were breathing in not only the fading petals but the rich earth from which a rose grows. This is a perfume that rejects prettiness but instead combines the opposing m...asculine and feminine elements that fuse within nature."

A sumptuous warm snuggle. A slick, slink streaks elegance; the padding of paws. Gilt dusted fur gleams in silken sunlight. A spellbinding purr bewitches, rolling beneath the suede of a soft, polished pelt. Excreta allure. My derma to your hide. My muse.

Anubis eau de parfum.
Egyptian jasmine. Pink lotus. Suede. Immortelle. Saffron. Frankincense.
With a name inspired by the Egyptian God of the afterlife, Anubis embodies the sacred mysteries of Ancient Egypt. Heady blooms of jasmine, amid rich suede, smoulder over an incense laden base of frankincense, sandalwood, and labdanum.
... Vivid slashes of immortelle, pink lotus and saffron create a perfume shrouded in darkness and veiled in mystery.

Everything at Papillon is truly artisan in every sense of the word. Nothing is outsourced and all of the fragrances are created, compounded, bottled and finished at my woodland studio in The New Forest.
So whether you purchase a full bottle of fragrance or a single sample, all of this is created by hand, by myself and made with love. ❤️

'Tobacco Rose starts off rosy green like a bud encased in leaves. Within half an hour it opens up to reveal a vivid red rose in full bloom. I haven’t come across a rose that is so close to the scent of the real thing. It feels like I’ve rubbed rose petals onto my skin and am left with a strong impression of their scent. Plush and intoxicating, this rose may be at the point of tipping over into decay but right now it is living and breathing at its absolute peak.
The distinctiv...e honeyed sweetness aided by the beeswax is perfectly counterbalanced by hay and vetiver, creating a background of dark earthiness. This intensifies towards the end as the rose returns to the soil from which it came.
Although the composition also features rose centfolia, I happily find it dominated by the deeper Bulgarian rose Otto. I’ve loved this essential oil for a number of years but never really found it in perfume form to my liking. Tobacco Rose has now fulfilled that desire perfectly with its rich, seductive beauty.
It has turned out to be my unexpected favourite of the three. I can’t get enough and find myself craving its aroma. Liz has far surpassed her goal of combating the common perception that rose fragrances are old-fashioned.' 🌹

'Soft, soft, soft. That’s how I’d describe Papillon Perfumery Dryad. When I was a kid, we used to pull cattails from the creek bed and twist their velvety tops open, releasing clouds of “fairies” into the breeze. Smelling Dryad is like chasing these seeds as they float in a meadow. It’s all about texture.
Papillon’s founder Liz Moores created Dryad, and its notes include narcissus, oakmoss, jonquil, costus, galbanum, clary sage, deer tongue, cedrat, benzoin, lavender, thyme a...nd orris. When Moores describes Dryad, she talks about the aroma of the forest surrounding her home and mentions that Dryad will smell familiar to lovers of Miss Dior and vintage Vol de Nuit.
I understand the references to these fragrances in Dryad’s green, hay-infused, leathery and mossy scent. I’d add Nina Ricci Fille d’Eve to the list, too. But the one thing Dryad has that the other perfumes don’t is a texture as light as goose down.
Dryad’s opening is a rich combination of galbanum (tart, smashed flower stems, leaves and cut grass) and narcissus with its hint of ashtray that gives the note the innocent-dirty feel I love. Moss and herbs take over as the galbanum retreats, and iris seasons Dryad’s heart rather than playing a starring role, given it a bare hint of sweetness. After twenty minutes or so, the “baby scalp” scent of costus comes through. It's sophisticated but easy.
Dryad settles into a sage-tinted leathery-mossy phase for a while before spending its last several hours humming in a quiet herbal-resin halo. I can dab it from my sample vial before my morning coffee and still smell it after dinner. While it’s present, it’s never intrusive. When I wear it, it’s sort of the “salt” to bring out my day’s style rather than driving force behind how I appear to the world....'
Lovely words by Angela for Now Smell This.

My inspiration for Salome was taken from an original 1920's photograph of a beautiful erotic dancer. It's a photograph that I pass in my hallway every day and each time I look at it I can't help but wonder about this daring and mysterious beauty and what her life was like. I felt that her dark and evocative portrait naturally lent itself to the story of Salome, who's intriguing and colourful representations have embellished fine literature for centuries. My aim was to create a perfume as enigmatic and alluring as the siren in the photograph whilst drawing from a wealth of enchanting literature about the spellbinding Salome.

Tobacco Rose eau de parfum.
A sensual blend of Bulgarian rose, geranium and Rose de Mai form an opulent backdrop of velvety rose notes set against a luxuriously rich and smoky base of French hay and earthy oakmoss.
Soft animalic touches of ambergris and beeswax have been suspended in a sumptuous blend of musks, creating an enigmatic, alluring and unmistakable perfume.
... A stunningly different interpretation of the majestic rose. 🌹
