Many farmers and owners are getting Asbestos Management Surveys in place. They need not be expensive but can certainly save time and money in the future. Please get in touch for a quote.

This strikes me as a slightly misleading article. Although part of the Fire Brigade's remit is fire safety checks those checks are also the responsibility of the 'Responsible Person'. If you have a commercial building (Office, Factory, Shop, holiday cottage etc) then you must have a Fire Risk Assessment in place. As the owner/tenant that is your responsibility.

A short video showing how quickly a fire can spread. The flash from the bookcase at about 2.24 is the book case igniting but not from the flame spreading but igniting from the heat of the smoke.
This scenario can be in a house, workplace, farm, factory etc.

It is Fire Door Safety Week
So here are 5 tips to make sure your fire doors in your office or flats are compliant:
1. Check for certification Is there a label or plug on top (or occasionally on the side) of the door to show it is a certificated fire door? You can use the selfie function on your camera phone or a mirror to check. If there is, that’s good news, otherwise report it to whoever is in charge of your building.... 2. Check the gaps Check the gaps around the top and sides of the door are consistently less than 4mm when closed. You can use a £1 coin to give a feel for scale, this is about 3mm thick. The gap under the door can be slightly larger (up to 8mm is not uncommon), but it does depend on the door - as a rule of thumb, if you can see light under the door, the gap is likely to be too big. It’s good news if the door fits the frame and it’s not damaged. If not, report it. If the gaps are too big smoke and fire could travel through the cracks. 3. Check the seals Are there any intumescent seals around the door or frame, and are they intact with no sign of damage? These seals are usually vital to the fire door's performance, expanding if in contact with heat to ensure fire (and in some cases smoke) can’t move through the cracks. If not, report it - the door may not be properly maintained and in the intensity of a fire may not protect you long enough. 4. Check the hinges Are the hinges firmly fixed (three or more of them), with no missing or broken screws? If you see problems, report it - the door is obviously not properly maintained and in the intensity of a fire may not perform and hold back the fire for long enough. 5. Check the door closes properly Open the door about halfway, let go and allow it to close by itself. Does it close firmly onto the latch without sticking on the floor or the frame? If not, report it. A fire door only works when it’s closed. A fire door is completely useless if it’s wedged open or can’t close fully.

Devastating for the farmer involved. Fires can start for all sorts of reasons. Fire Risk Assessments can mitigate fires and help fire crews too. Please call for a chat about Fire Risk Assessments on farms.

Today is World Mesothelioma Awareness Day.
What is mesothelioma? Mesothelioma is a cancer of the mesothelium – the thin membrane that lines the chest and abdomen (tummy) and surrounds the organs in these parts of the body. The mesothelium has different names depending on where it’s located in the body. A cancer of any mesothelium is called a malignant mesothelioma, but is more usually referred to simply as ‘mesothelioma’. Mesothelioma is incurable and is inevitably fatal – de...ath usually occurs within 12-18 months of diagnosis. This high death rate is due in part to the fact that mesothelioma symptoms don’t usually develop until many years after the initial exposure to asbestos. It can take around 10-20 years before any symptoms of mesothelioma become ‘clinically manifest’ but it can be as long as 50 years before symptoms become apparent. Once diagnosed, it is usually too late for anything other any palliative treatment.
Are you confident that your Farm, Factory, Office or Village Hall complies with the Control Of Asbestos Regulations 2012?

Luckily it sounds as though he was not to badly hurt. However it does highlight the importance of the need to maintain an up to date Fire Risk Assessment.

We are often asked if Fire Doors really work and why they should be closed. There was a fire on the other side of this door and the room was destroyed! Don't block fire doors open, they are there for a reason.

Asbestos is just as likely to be found in residential properties as it is in commercial. This video is of Asbestos found by a plumber who was asked to fix a leaking pipe.
