Pario Gallico -Historical Food And Crafts- Description

''Pario Gallico'' translates as ''The Gallic Cauldron'' in ancient Gaul language (Iron Age celts from nowadays France), as this is our favourite time period to portray. . . though not the only one we present!

What do we do?
- Iron Age living history displays
(usually 1st BC-1st AD, before ad during the Roman conquest of Britain).
We portray a lower-middle class household, with one or two interpreters, and present everyday tasks (such as clothing & hygiene, cordage making, cooking & washing up (the ancient way! ), hunting & bone / antler work, small jewellery making. . . ), as well as specific themes and professional historical crafts (historic blacksmithing, period food & cooking techniques, butchery & animal products processing or ancient paints & pigment making).

- Ancient crafts / Historical food and cooking demonstrations
(Iron Age to Tudor - 17th century)
Blacksmithing, Tudor spices & feasting, Tudor - Jacobean Christmas food & traditions, 16th-17th c. Halloween specials

- Ancient crafts courses, workshops and hands-on activities.
(Often at The Berrycroft Hub, The Ancient Technology Centre, Butser Ancient Farm. . . or on site for staff /volunteers trainings and private group bookings!

After a dense rain shower, cold and dripping wet, nothing more comforting than a hot vegetable pot! Celeriac, kale, wild garlic, cabbage, parsnips, thyme... Yep, Iron Age leftovers make great dishes ;)

And another one from the Berrycroft Hub Page! Part of the Iron Age cooking course was to make your own bread dough using different types of flours and ingredients (eggs, butter, buttermilk, milk, ale...) then choosing the fillings: cheese and wild garlic / ramsons were very successful ;) . . .... #ironage #ancientfood #ancientbritain #celts #berrycrofthub #cookingcourse #outdoorcooking #campfire #recipe #historicalfood #foodhistory #historyoffood #outdoorlearning #ancientskills #traditional #traditionalfood #adultlearning #archaeology #prehistory #ironagekitchen #kale #porkstew #swindon #oxfordshire #livinghistory #experimentalarchaeology #breadmaking #flatbread #foraging #wildplants #cheesybread #skillet #wildgarlicbread #ramsons #cheese #ancienttastes #saxons #anglosaxon #viking #museums

Apparently the highlight of the course was butter making by hand! Very successful pupils and both butter and buttermilk were used to make flat breads and oat cakes 😉 #berrycrofthub . . .... #ironage #experimentalarchaeology #cookingclass #butter #makingbutter #buttermilk #recipe #ancientbritons #ancientcooking #traditionalskills #ancienttechniques #butterpad #handsonlearning

Many participants had a good go at using my tiny mini froe (not that I had forgotten the big one at all..). It's so easy to use (safe and fun too, kids can use it 😉) and I was asked where I found it. Well... The blacksmith made it for me! Feel free to contact Thomas at Big Beynon's Blacksmithing to order anything

Are you not a tad cold? Because I am. And when it happens I got back to tasty simple basics, so let's make some ancient comfort food! ;)
Title: HONEY OAT CAKES Also called sweet blandaa breads* and ''Prehistory Flapjacks''. *(named from a traditional Shetland Islands recipe of oat cakes)
... Datation: Ever since you have oats, butter and honey around (see below: Neolithic as secondary ... until nowadays! In Britain oats are considered to have been a weed in first farmers' fields. They grew in a wild form before being cultivated and then used as a ''secondary crop'' if the harvest of the main one failed. So from 200BC / Bronze Age onwards you should be fine. And don't think that only northern parts of the british isles used oats! As they can be baked over a hot stone, a skillet, a pan, a flat iron etc... no need to wait the introduction of metal frying pans in Britain to enjoy these tasties.
RECIPE: 500gr rolled oats 210gr honey* 115gr butter 2 pinches salt 1/4 cup of milk OR water OR mead, fruit juice.. Any liquid! (optional seeds, berries, nuts)
*way less honey would have been used throughout history, but customers have a very sweet tooth these days. This is an amount of sweetness I can tolerate, though I'm happy with 180gr honey as well personally.
Melt the butter and honey together in a pan. Mix oats and salt in a bowl. Add the liquid to the bowl, pour the melted mixture on top and mix until well absorbed, when hot, with a spoon/spatula first, then when cooler use your hands to knead the dough.
Knead until the mix becomes sticky (the gluten is released by the heat and the kneading) and holds together, or until your arms fall off. Usually about 10 minutes.
Let the mix cool down, it's easier to shape into balls (walnut size), then to flaten them as cakes 5mm thick (1/4 inch for you, non-metric-system aficionados).
Bake at 180c for about 15minutes on a tray lined with baking paper. Bake as long as it takes for them to get golden and hold together on a skillet / hot stone, then turn them and let them brown a little on the other side. Careful! They'll be soft and breakable when just bakes, but let them cool down and they will get sturdier and transportable!
Enjoy with a cup of nettle or fruit tea, hot milk (that already tastes very sweet by nature) or warm with cooked apple slices... so comforting ;)

Iron Age life food and cooking demonstration.
http://www.miltonkeynesmuseum.org.uk/hist ory-festival-at-c…/
''Milton Keynes steps back in time with a huge weekend celebrating 2000 years of history
... Fun for all ages
One of the flagship events to celebrate MK50 in 2017 made history itself – by delivering Milton Keynes’ biggest ever historical re-enactment!
Now, two years on, Campbell Park will again be transformed from its usual tranquil green space into a place lively with clashes, battles, and even maybe even Royalty.
A huge and colourful programme will bring all the sights and sounds, and some of the smells from times past, into the present.
The Festival of History is being organised by the Heritage MK Partners – Milton Keynes Museum, Bletchley Park, City Discovery Centre, Cowper and Newton Museum and the Living Archive – in partnership with The Parks Trust.
The full programme will be posted here closer to the event, but you can get ready for a brilliantly accessible, colourful, creative weekend.
In fact, it will be so good that money can’t buy it – admission will be FREE.''
