Partnership For Observation Of The Global Ocean - Pogo Description

The Partnership for Observation of the Global Ocean, POGO, is a forum created in 1999 by directors and leaders of major oceanographic institutions around the world to promote global ocean observing. Of particular focus is the implementation of an international and integrated global ocean observing system. POGO is a partnership of institutions involved in oceanographic observations, scientific research, operational services, education and training. POGO has 49 member institutes, including several consortia, from 28 different countries, and works closely with other international and regional programmes and organisations.

As the scale of these activities becomes global, there is an increasing value in coordination among the institutions involved. Through joint planning and exchange of information, the community can make better use of the limited resources available. POGO does not set scientific goals, but focuses attention on implementation issues such as technical compatibility among observing networks; shared use of infrastructure; and on public outreach and capacity building.

POGO's Mission

POGO’s Mission is to:
1. Lead innovation and development of the crucial components of the ocean observing system.
2. Identify and contribute to the development of the key skills, capabilities and capacities needed to achieve the vision.
3. Work with Governments, Foundations and Industry, to articulate the benefits to society and required funding to build and sustain the system.

Our vision is to have by 2030, world-wide cooperation for a sustainable, state-of-the-art global ocean observing system that serves the needs of science and society.

POGO is pleased to announce that, in partnership with Plymouth Marine Laboratory, it is offering a POGO-PML Visiting Fellowship for training on-board an Antarctic Deep Water Rates of Export (ANDREX) Cruise.
The selected candidate will have the opportunity to visit Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) for one month prior to the start of the cruise to participate in cruise preparation and planning; and to go on the cruise (14th February to 10th April 2019) to help make biogeochemic...al observations (carbonate and oxygen chemistry).
One fellowship is being offered and the successful candidate will focus on Carbonate and Oxygen chemistry, under the supervision of Dr Vassilis Kitidis and Mr Ian Brown of PML. This fellowship would suit a candidate with an environmental science or analytical interest/background. The applicant needs to contact the prospective supervisors with a short CV and a statement of interest outlining their current research and what they hope to gain from the training no later than 10 October 2018, to allow sufficient time for the supervisor to consider the application before the submission deadline and issue an acceptance letter.
For full details on the fellowship, and to submit an application, please visit http://www.oceantrainingpartnership.org/A NDREXII
The deadline for applications for the 2019 fellowship is Wednesday 17 October 2018. All applicants will be informed of the decision within one month of the deadline.

A new POGO and GEO Blue Planet Working Group - Earth Observations for Ecology & Epidemiology of Water-associated Diseases - got off to a great start with a recent Scoping Meeting in Abingdon UK.
The WG aims to identify benefits, best practices and feasibility of incorporating Earth observation measurements into early-warning systems for water-associated diseases. It will provide a forum to exchange useful information, share data and coordinate activities where feasible, to maximise benefits to society.

"The Earth Has One Big Ocean With Many Features."
So states the first principle of the ocean literacy curriculum, a series of fundamental concepts to help us better understand the ocean's influence on us and our influence on the ocean. World Ocean Radio's Ocean Literacy series continues this week with an overview of the various ways that the one oceanic system connects us all, with examples of the connections that occur worldwide: shipping, trade, circulation of water, watershed connections, weather, climate, food, coastal settlement, social connections, and much more.
"One Big Ocean" is episode two of an eight-part series on Ocean Literacy, an anthology of reflections, examples and illustrations that represent responses to the ocean and the environmental challenges we face.
