The first in a mini series of five paintings 'Heads in Boxes' employs a simple format of open spaces and intriguing perspectives to discuss the dynamic and shifting political landscape and the uncertainties surrounding traditional democratic values. A dominant figure in the foreground stands with their hands bound behind them and a covering over their head. Moving back behind them is a chair then a hooded, shrouded figure kneeling underneath a bastardised stars and stripes flag guillotine. To the side a butcher works at a piece f flesh on a butchers table.

Thomas employs the table as a vehicle to present this eulogy. The table top mimics the stage; a performance the artist must undertake every time they exhibit and discuss their work. Altered States employs a trinity of figures in order to discuss different facets of the artists personality; the different states one enacts in the studio, in public or in a different social situation.

As the conflict in Syria reached new levels of chaos and destruction Thomas looked for metaphors on which to convey the horror and inhumanity of war and the large scale destruction of children, women and men. Finding a photograph of a market trader skinning a chicken Thomas found a perfect vehicle for the abstraction of this destruction. Humanity was being reduced to brutal forms of flesh, chewed up and spat out by global political forces, exploding bombs and flying shrapnel.
