🚗😰🐾 ➡️ 🚗🥰🐾 How to prevent travel anxiety/ car phobia in your pup during lockdown when travelling is restricted/ how to work on dogs during lockdown that already exhibit some stress when travelling:

🐾😰Avoiding separation anxiety 😰🐾
Part of training a new puppy is teaching the puppy to cope on their own, we do this by leaving our pup in a safe secure place for short amounts of time whilst we go off out 🏡.
During this strange time (when phrases such as self isolating and lockdown are now part of our lives), we still need to prepare our pups to be able to cope for when the country gets back to normal function.
... Can you imagine being there for your puppy 24/7 and then, suddenly, in a few weeks or months time you up and leave and go to work - how will your puppy cope? This will affect some adult dogs too - I often have to help owners with dogs that develop separation anxiety after their owners have had a prolonged time at home; most commonly due to owner illness, maternity leave or loss of job. This can be a long process of recovery and the dog, in severe cases, may require medication to help them cope.
So how can we avoid our dog’s and our new puppies from developing this debilitating behaviour problem and prevent them from later struggling with anxiety which can cause destruction, vocalisation, house soiling and extreme distress?
The answer is simple. Time out. Give your dogs time out; give them time to chill, to relax away from you, every day. It could be that you ask your dog to settle downstairs whilst you go upstairs for a while, you may use baby gates, room dividers a crate or a puppy play pen to stop them from following you from room to room all day, you may decide to allow them to chill out and eat their dinner from a Kong or other such device whilst you watch TV in another room. It doesn’t matter when you do it, but try and encourage your pup to settle away from you every day & not just at night. Think about your ‘normal’ routine and prepare them for this whilst you can.
This is just as important as all the mental stimulation and games, it’s just as important as housetraining; train your dog to cope. Otherwise, when our lives return to normal theirs may fall apart.
Enjoy the extra time you get to spend with your dogs, it’s precious, but, remember to give them the skills they need for when life goes back to normal.
Tomorrow’s tip = preparing your pups during lockdown for car travel, how to avoid car anxiety in future. 🚗😨😰

Especially for those of you with new puppies and unable to get them out and about as you would normally .. but anyone can join in - it’s all environmental enrichment after all! Puppy development challenge 1:
🎧 🎵 🚒 ✈️⏰🔔📢 Find 5 new noises the pup has not yet been exposed to. Play these noises on a device (TV, tablet, smart phone, computer) at such a low level the pup does not respond. If need be play the noise in another room to create suitable distance. Soon as your pup is ...calm (milling about, sniffing the floor, laying down etc) start to offer parts of their daily food ration. You are teaching your pup to switch off in the presence of noise. Gradually, over time increase the volume of the noise whilst watching your pup to ensure they remain calm and show no signs of distress. Introduce new noises daily. Please share any novel noises you have introduced. GO!
