It's starting to get colder and wetter - not exactly the type of weather that our little spiky friends prefer... πŸ¦”πŸΎπŸ‚πŸŒ§πŸŒ¬
Why not build your own feeding station to keep our hedgehog friends dry and happy or buy one of our lovely hog houses handmade from recycled wood? 😊🌳

Hedgehogs become sexually mature when they reach their second year of life. From this point on, they can breed every year until they die.
Reproduction generally occurs between April and September with May and June being the most active periods in the UK and therefore after a gestation period of about 36 days, 4-5 young are born, of which 2-3 are weaned successfully. However, if the mother is disturbed in any way, she often deserts or even eats the young so please be very car...eful if you see hoglets as you might put their lives at risk! Juveniles will go off foraging with their mum when they are 3-4 weeks old and will leave completely after around 10 days of foraging with their mother.
Young from late or second litters in late September or October are less likely to survive as often they do not have enough time to fatten up. If you are concerned about hoglets in your garden, please get in touch as we are happy to offer help πŸ¦”πŸΎπŸ‚πŸ˜Š

Thank you, thank you to the amazing customers of Laurendale Pet Products & Grooming in Eastham for a fabulously full donation tin, for selling our bespoke hog havens and for a big bag of food for hungry Hoggery Hogs.
Happy Hogs indeed!

User

A massive thank you to Maccombs Pet Store' in Hoylake for the contents of our donations tin and a huge amount of donated cat food.
We get through a lot of cat food in The Hoggery and by making such donations, you are directly feeding the "patients" in our specialist Hedgehog Rescue and Hospital.
If your business or place of work would like a Donation Station - please get in touch and we will arrange one to be delivered.

*DAVE UPDATE*
He has gone into an early hibernation! Potentially due to the rapid change in weather.
... Little Dave has managed to under the noses of his carers build a sneaky new nest (his hog house wasn’t good enoughπŸ˜‚) and has began hibernation.
He did do this the year previous and came out of it and decided it wasn’t for him so who knows how long this will last πŸ˜‚
He was a good weight, weighing in at around a kilo so should have a safe hibernation as ideally a hog should be over 650g to do this.
On a plus side it means more hog biscuits for the blackbirds πŸ’š

Do you have badgers and/or foxes visiting your garden? Lucky you! 🦊🐾
Don't know how/what to feed them? Here are some valuable tips:
Foxes - try to replicate their natural diet as much as possible offering raw boneless meat, tinned dog food or specially formulated fox food. Want to treat your foxes? Feed them unsalted peanuts, fruit and cheese.
... Badgers - wet dog or cat food, raw peanuts or brazil nuts, seeds, acorns, mealworms, specially formulated badger food or various fruits including apples, pears, plums and elderberries.

We want to acknowledge some of the great people protecting our wildlife.
Unfortunately, badger cull zones have increased in numbers and geographical spread, so badgers need our help more than ever!
Looks like a great opportunity to get involved with wildlife protection 🐾

In addition to Thursday's post, here are a few tips to make your garden more hedgehog/wildlife friendly.
1) Leave the leaves - not only do they provide bedding for nests but insects hide in leaf piles, providing hedgehogs and other wildlife with a delicious snack πŸ¦”πŸ¦πŸ¦‡πŸΏ
2) Home sweet home - research has shown that man-made hedgehog houses are used by hedgehogs and provide a safer, more sheltered place for hibernation.
... 3) Keep planting and support feeding - there are still plants that you can plant to attract a variety of insects, for example Sedums, Wallflowers, Dahlias and Echinacea. Also, don't forget to support feed the wildlife in your garden all year around!

Very interesting video by Vale Wildlife Hospital & Rehabilitation Centre (Vale Wildlife Rescue) explaining metabolic bone disease and how it is caused.
Please do not feed hedgehogs mealworms, peanuts or sunflower hearts. These contain high amounts of phosphate which end up in the bloodstream, lowering calcium concentrations in the blood.
To compensate for this, the body drags out calcium from the bones leaving them weakened and prone to fractures. In the worst cases, this le...ads to a slow painful death.
Keep it simple - offer cat food and a shallow bowl of water πŸ¦”πŸΎ

Seasons are changing πŸƒπŸ‚πŸ
You might have noticed a slight change - although it is still rather warm for autumn. The trees are starting to shed leaves providing various species with bedding for their hibernation nests.
We are seeing an increasing number of second litter babies being uncovered in accidents and mums and babies being parted when they need each other most.
... Please take extra care when working in your gardens, when raking leaves, when clearing paths and borders this time of the year as you might disturb someone's nest πŸ¦”πŸ¦ŽπŸπŸΎ

Visited the centre on open day, met the lovely people who through a lot of hard work have now got a safe haven for our injured and orphaned hogs and wildlife. The centre is an immaculate and well prepared and organised unit. An amazing place which hopefully local people will support so these great group of people will grow from strength to strength to care for our local wildlife. XX

Truly fantastic staff who have a real love and passion for wildlife rescue and rehabilitation!

User

I went to the rescue quite recently, all I can see is a team of people who are all doing something they love and more importantly it benefits English wildlife. I have never seen such a vast amount of passion from each member of staff. All on the same page and all having the same goals. The knowledge they all have seems to be limitless, I learnt so much. No only just about hedgehogs but about wildlife itself and how I can help it. I couldn’t help but donate for such a good cause, the actual venue itself seems to have everything they need. Very modern and very professional, I will definitely be back again!!! οΏ½οΏ½οΏ½

User

Excellent, clean facilities. I don't think the hogs will be wanting to move out quickly! Lovely ethos too as they'll never turn away sick or injured wildlife and always seek best possible help for whatever species walks through the door. X
