Asphalt/tarmac retains heat and can cause serious burns to dogs paws when you least expect it, please test the ground before taking your dog out and avoid the hottest part of the day. Dogs are not good at regulating their own body temperatures and overheat very easiy, so avoid strenuous activities and give them a rest day from walks. A tired dog does not make a good dog, but a tired dog in this heat could end up a dead dog. Keep them safe #BeTheChange

This goof ball is one of our mascots, stooge dog Tilly the beagle enjoying a lay in this weekend (on my side of the bed no less πŸ™ˆπŸ€£). In the past Tilly had been described as reactive towards some dogs, now days she makes much better behaviour choices, and is able to work with me to help other reactive dogs, she's come a long way in a short time.
Part of the reason for this is she has learned that choosing a positive behaviour, or in fact doing nothing at all in the presence o...f an unfamiliar dog is extremely rewarding (we break out the really special treats). She has also learned if she is in a situation she is unhappy with she can signal to me that she wants to leave, by giving me eye contact, and we leave because we are a team and it's not always up to me.
Most importantly I have given all my six rescue dogs undergoing rehabilitation rest days! That's right, it's probably the biggest myth going that all dogs need to be walked every day, if you have a reactive dog, a really anxious dog, or a dog that suffers from over arousal, teach them how to relax, let them have a lay in, use that time they would normally be walked to do other things with them like scatter feeding in the garden, some calm games etc. Do this once or twice a week and see the transformation, although I can't promise you won't have to give up your side of the bed! 🀣🐺 #ThatFaceThough 🀣🀣🀣

You don't have to reinvent the wheel or spend a fortune to provide good enrichment for your dog. Here we have a high value food and/or a chew toy in a closed box that the dog must break into to get at it. This game can be a really powerful tool, just like it is in the following scenarios.
A) We can teach an anxious dog that separation is rewarding by putting high value food in the box, this encourages problem solving skills, and appropriate chewing helping the dog relax when... alone, and give them something to do (other than chew the chair leg). To work it's got to be a really tempting treat, the highest value you can think of, or it just won't be motivating enough to that dog that is worried about being left alone.
B) We have a power chewer that destroys the box to get the chew toy, the initial act of chewing uses up that need to be destructive, so when they get to the chew toy inside we've not only added value by making challenging, that chew toy is going to last a lot longer than the 5 mins it usually does!
So all we need is a little out the box thinking! (Pun intended πŸ™ˆπŸ€£) Happy hump day everyone!

Woody had a great time tracking in the long grass today, so much so he didn't seem to mind at all that his longline had got wrapped around him πŸ™ˆπŸ€£ We are working on this little fellas reactivity towards other dogs, and doing exercises for self-control which Woody loves, he's so much more relaxed and focused now!

Wow what a great first one to one with little Bella here! Such a smart cookie! Lisa has already been putting in the groundwork to help Bella over the last few weeks with her anxiety and reactivity towards some dogs, it was a great starting point for todays exercises, although Bella was a little hesitant at first she quickly learned to be more optimistic about learning new things, and soon worked out which behaviours were rewarding. So excited to see how she develops over the next few weeks!

Really excited to announce we will have a stall at the Cotgrave Festival, Saturday June 15th at the Cotgrave Welfare this year. So come along and meet Stooge dog's Tilly and Smokey. We will be offering free training and behaviour tips on the day, and will have resource sheets to take away on a range of subjects, as well as doing a few demonstrations through the day and talking about some of our exciting new services. Can't wait to see you! #BeTheChange

Had a fabulous one to one with this stunner Wilf! Just look at that face 😍. He is making great progress with his sensitivity to certain noises, impulse control and separation related issues. It was great to see him enjoying scentwork and other games designed to build confidence, and install a love of working with his owners, whom he already had a great relationship with. My clients have transformed the life of this little chap, since he came over from Spain as a rescue. Great job everyone!

This is for a fabulous dog rescue that I have been working with to assess dogs coming in and to help with training. They are extremely dedicated and have an excellent network of foster carers. If you can help at all by donating any amount for this unusual case, it would be truly wonderful! This dog will be particularly struggling in quarantine because he has come from Romania, the quicker this dog can be reunited with his foster carer the better. Thanks for reading!

Had a great one to one with this adorable pair today! It's great to see how well they are doing! It was always going to be challenging to introduce Monty (who was very dog reactive when I started working with him) to his little Staffie sister Betty. However, Freya and her family have done a great job of turning Monty's behaviour around, and helping Betty settle in prior to there introduction recently. Now Monty is learning how to play with Betty and did a great job meeting two of my Stooge dogs with optimism today, Alfy and Tilly. His previous go to behaviour of fear-aggression was no where to be seen. Which is a complete turn around in a few short weeks!
