You should be able to read a car number plate from 20 metres with your spectacles or contact lenses.... How old does a child have to be before he or she can have an eye examination?
It is recommended that children have their eyes examined just before they start school, at about 4 years old. If they are having difficulties or you have any concerns, you should take them sooner. A child does not need to be able to read letters to have a sight test.... If there is a history of a squint or lazy eye in the family, or a history of family needing glasses at a young age, it is really important to get their vision checked. The NHS pays for sight tests for children under 16 years old, and also those aged 16 to 18 in full-time education.
