About Peter Le Marchant Trust

For over 45 years the Trust has provided day trips and holidays on waterways for disabled and seriously-ill people of all ages

Peter Le Marchant Trust Description

For over thirty five years the Trust has provided day outings and holidays on waterways for people of all ages with any kind of disability or serious illness.

Peter Le Marchant

Peter Le Marchant died very young in the early ‘70s. His sister Clare searched for some time to find the best way to commemorate his life On a trip on a friend’s canal boat in 1973, she hit on the idea of building a boat for the disabled. That friend was a founder Trustee and, having resigned as a Trustee, took over the running of the Trust in 2002.

The first boat was a 40’ narrowboat called “Matilda”. She carried her first 12 passengers in 1976.

As a result of the success of that first year, the Trust was formed in early 1977.

Various new-buildings followed, every time with improved facilities for the safety and comfort of the passengers. After a few years we realised that we could offer much better facilities if we operated broad-beam boats, which are 4 feet wider than narrow-boats.

Our Boats

We have three boats:

“Symphony” – the day boat, carrying 26 passengers every day between April and October, weekends included.
“Serenade” – the holiday boat, taking 10 passengers for 4-night holidays.
Both are broad-beam boats, 65’ long and 10’6” wide. Both have full-time Skippers who hold Boatmaster’s Licences and are trained in First Aid.

“Melody” – a 65’ narrowboat, available for weekly hire by a family or group with a disabled or seriously ill member.
All the boats are fully equipped for the maximum safety and comfort of our passengers, with hydraulic lifts, wheelchair friendly toilets and showers, full central heating, resuscitation equipment.

Last year we carried over 4, 000 passengers of all ages (5 has been the youngest; 108 the oldest) and every disability.

“Symphony” and “Serenade” are the total responsibility of their Skippers, who maintain, repair and paint them during the winter, when they are surveyed by the Maritime & Coastguard Agency. They are also responsible for maintaining “Melody”.

We went today on the Santa Sleighboat and it was a fantastic experience. Very friendly people and very well organised! Well worth it for the price you pay and our daughter got to see Santa, spend some time with him and got a present without waiting on any queues, unlike at many other similar events. Happy girl and happy parents, well done!

User

We went for a perfect boat ride and saw Santa today, our son is 14 and has autism and significant learning and communication difficulties but still wants to see Santa so after hearing fantastic things about Peter Le Merchant I booked. We took our youngest daughter too as she is a young carer as both her older siblings have complex disabilities so it was lovely to do something together. Due to our eldest daughters chronic anxiety and social phobia she couldn't join us today but after chatting to a very helpful elf we are looking into doing a family boat trip which would be brilliant as we all found it very calming and all thoroughly enjoyed it :) Thank you.

User

We have just returned from a week on the Melody and want to say a huge Thank You to your amazing team for all your hard work.

It was a great week of relaxation and fun but the best thing was seeing my parents relaxing and enjoying themselves for the first time since my dads cancer surgery in December.

We can't thank you enough. Xx

User

We had a wonderful time on the santa canal boat trip today. The trip lasted about 40mins the grandchildren spent quite a while chatting to santa in his grotto then he joined everyone towards the end of the trip. The gifts they received were relevant for their age,. Santa's elf helpers were all lovely and nothing was too much trouble for them. Exceptional value too, would highly recommend it.
