Our Dizziness and Balance Clinic is doing extremely well as word of the success of Suzie's treatments spreads. Dizziness is such a common symptom that it affects almost 1 in 4 adults under 65, and can seriously affect quality of life. If you know someone who is suffering please let them know that there is help available.
"I cannot thank Suzie enough for getting me back on track after suffering a very debilitating bout of Labyrinthitis. I still have a little way to go but the... improvement in my balance is amazing and the horrendous symptoms I've been experiencing in my head have almost gone. This is all down to the excellent therapy I've received from Suzie and also very importantly her amazing encouragement. I honestly thought I was a lost cause and that I would have to live with the symptoms for the rest of my life." D.M. June 2019

Confirming what we already know, a recent study showed that Pilates improved dynamic balance, lower limb muscle strength and lower body flexibility in people over 60. We run 3 specialist "older adult" classes per week, but there is no age limit on our general classes, and many of our class members are well into their 60's and 70's!

Well done to our physio Janet Betts who has recently completed the first half of Sheffield Hallam University’s “Introduction to motivational interviewing and behaviour change”. This is part of her continuing development as a specialist in the treatment of persistent pain. She says “This course teaches a person centred approach which aims to help clients to understand how they feel about change and to strengthen their commitment and ability to bring about behaviour change. The...re were a broad spectrum of people on the course, who all work in trying to encourage behaviour change in their field. This included medics, psychologists, occupational therapists, sports physicians and nurses in mental, occupational and public health, as well as other physio’s. I’m looking forward to Part 2 in July.” Janet offers 1-1 and group sessions to help those suffering with persistent pain. Please see our website or get in touch for further details.

Today was a big day for Physiofit as we held our first full training day for our physio’s. Janet took the lead with a great presentation on Persistent Pain, Suzie shared balance exercises to challenge the vestibular system, and the practical session by Stella and Jenny on strength and conditioning tested all our gluteal muscles! Finally we were joined by many of our Pilates instructors for an emergency first aid training course by CLX First Aid

Gill Brook has also been instrumental in bringing stand up comedian and physiotherapist Elaine Miller to Otley with her show "Laugh Don't Leak". This hilarious show uses comedy to increase awareness of issues some people can be too embarrassed to talk about!

A big congratulations to physiotherapist Gill Brook who attended the World Confederation for Physical Therapy Congress in Geneva last month where she received an international award for her work with the International Organisation of Physical Therapists in Women’s Health. Gill Brook has now retired from clinical practice but continues to support our pelvic floor physiotherapy service through training sessions and peer support.

Many people think that Pilates is just for ladies, but we have a strong contingent of men in our classes. Its great to hear how much benefit our Pilates classes can give.
"I just want to put on record how grateful I am for how you have helped me with my back injury. The sessions I have had with Becky, Stella and more recently Caitlin have been invaluable in teaching me how to manage my back injury." Andrew J. June 2019.
We do have beginner spaces still available for the June/July courses, so if you think it could be of benefit to the men in your life please nudge them to get in touch!

Good to see pelvic floor exercises featuring in the mainstream press again. This article mentions Pilates and a few apps and devices that can help women and men do their exercises. But also emphasizes that getting the technique correct is important, Please get checked by our specialist pelvic floor physio Caroline if you are having any pelvic floor issues.

It was great to have 2 of Physiofit’s instructors on the Modern Pilates UK workshop this weekend. Here are Yulia and Elaine having fun attempting some of the higher level Pilates exercises! Feedback (from non Physiofit attendees!) included "Brilliant as always, professional and clear from the start and throughout", "Great course, knowledgeable tutor. Really enjoyed it"

Jenny is looking forward to teaching this workshop on Sunday. A full day of practical with lots of progressions for intermediate to advanced level classes.

We are pleased to have won another award from GHP this year. "Best Physiotherapy Practice - West Yorkshire & GHP Award for Excellence in Respiratory Physiotherapy"
This recognises the work of our physio Suzie Crellin in treating respiratory problems. Suzie can help with the symptoms of many lung conditions such as bronchiectasis, COPD, emphysema, asthma and hyperventilation syndrome. Her treatment can really make a difference:
"I have been coming to see Suzie Crellin for ches...t physiotherapy since about March this year. I have bronchiestasis and had had a particularly difficult winter with multiple chest infections. Suzie has been helping me with breathing exercises to clear the mucous. This has been excellent and her knowledge of my lung condition and other lung conditions is huge. It is great to be able to discuss my problems with her ,as with doctors and specialists they don't normally have the time. When necessary she also performs percussion. I would thoroughly recommend this young woman to anyone with a chest complaint."- Sue H. Nov 2018

It’s lovely to have some new artwork for the walls in our waiting room. Our very talented receptionist and web designer Ceri has loaned us some of her work to display. Thanks Ceri!

You may think that stress incontinence is only a problem after childbirth or with old age, but surprising numbers of younger women can suffer, particularly those doing sports. This article highlights this, and other issues that women doing sport may suffer. Strengthening and ensuring correct use of the pelvic floor muscles during exercise is important to help avoid and alleviate problems. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/…/exclusive -shocking-figu…/amp/…

Our dizziness and balance clinic is already making a difference to our patients. Suzie has has some amazing feedback:
“Suzie did a thorough assessment before performing the Epley manoeuvre - and it was like magic! The dizziness stopped immediately and hasn't returned. It was literally like a miracle cure, albeit based on sound scientific principles. I would definitely encourage anyone suffering from BPPV to go and see Suzie and it's such a shame my the GP didn't seem to be aw...are of this instant cure.” Andrea R. Jan 2019

Did you know that dizziness is a very common problem that affects 1 in 4 adults under 65, and gets even more common with age. Dizziness and balance problems can be very unpleasant and affect quality of life. But Physiotherapy can help! Our Physio Suzie has developed a specialist clinic to offer assessment and treatment. Here she is explaining a little more:

We've been forwarded this lovely email from one of the students on the Modern Pilates UK course Jenny taught last weekend: "Having attended the Hip and Knee course previously I was really impressed with the service and quality of the course content. Having just completed the Spinal course I feel I have gained much more knowledge by doing the home study and Jenny explaining everything so well. It was definitely worth the six hour round trip" The Spinal course involves practical and theory to help Pilates Instructors learn to help those with spinal pain more effectively. We explore current pain science concepts, some of which are nicely summarised in this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_3phB93r vI

A big thank you to Gill Brook who, although now retired from clinical work, came in today to lead a training session for our Women’s Health physio’s on the use of the biofeedback machine for pelvic floor muscle training. Evidence based guidelines state that pelvic floor training should be the first line of treatment for urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. Biofeedback can be a useful treatment tool to help patients perform the exercises.
