Phil France will be live in-store at Piccadilly Records performing tracks from his new album ‘Circle’, released on 31st August on Gondwana Records.
“Phil France’s Circle sees The Cinematic Orchestra bassist creating a series of simple, unfolding minimal pieces, all arpeggiated synths and warm oscillator drones. The results sound, variously, like Vangelis discovering acid house, or Mike Oldfield mutating into Nils Frahm, or New Order’s Elegia transformed into a minimalist symp...hony.” - The Guardian
Manchester based, composer, bassist and producer Phil France, was a key collaborator alongside Jason Swincoe in The Cinematic Orchestra. He was responsible for some of the most heartrendingly beautiful music created in recent times, co-writing, arranging and producing on The Cinematic Orchestra albums including Every Day, Man With A Movie Camera, Ma Fleur and also the triple award winning soundtrack for The Crimson Wing nature documentary.
He released his debut solo album The Swimmer in 2013 and five years later France presents the follow up, the enigmatically titled, Circle, which again represents a very personal journey for the artist. For France the album is an extension of work he began on The Swimmer. A process he has described as: “blocks of sound containing intricate minimal arpeggiated patterns and electronic textures that develop and shift in subtle, original and melodic ways.”
The trancelike quality, mood and electronic character of title track Circle led France to think of the circular patterns which eventually became a potent concept for the album. “I consider circles to be a strong symbol of unity, strength and inclusiveness. Events, ideas and fashions repeat themselves in cycles. Events are said to travel full circle’ and this is important to me because it represents my own recent personal and musical journey after 15 years touring as bassist and composer with The Cinematic Orchestra.”
DJ support comes from Manchester based composer, producer, trumpeter, DJ and founder of Gondwana Records, Matthew Halsall, who’s one of the UK’s most creative talents.
A gifted trumpeter with a beautiful, expressive tone, his music has explored his love of the transcendental spiritual and modal jazz of Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders, as well as more contemporary music of bands such as The Cinematic Orchestra.

User

Wow, spent an hour looking for some classic LP’s. Great range of music. Had to be dragged out by the wife. 👍🏼

User

Wow! What a shop. A fantastic selection of music with something for everyone. Lots of staff on hand to help and all very friendly. I travelled up from Christchurch, Dorset just to visit this "Music Mecca"! I was not disappointed. I'll be shopping online soon. I must visit for anyone who loves music!

User

We have visited twice in the last 12 months and made a special trip from Sydney via London - our first port of call in Manchester. You can tell the owners passion. Seriously you could walk in blindfolded and pick 5 records and not go wrong. We had to put albums back as we couldn’t afford the excess baggage. Thank goodness for mail order ! Can’t wait to visit again !

User

Such good service in this place! Definitely one of the nicest record stores I've been to! Was looking for a particular soundtrack which was unfortunately sold the day before I was in (just my luck) but the guy behind the till (who's name i unfortunately didn't get) was really helpful suggesting places I could try for it :) Will definitely be back to this place if I ever find myself in Manchester again!

User

So happy with my purchase. I received it in Canada in about a week and a half. The record is perfect. Thank you. I hope to visit when we fly to Manchester in July!

User

Simply brilliant shop, great service, best selection of all kinds of music and related goodies. Been shopping here since I was a kid and I'm pleased to stay it's still going strong! Always worth a pop in if your in town, or it's just as easy to order through the website too.

User

Piccadilly Records is simply the greatest record store out there. The staff are super nice and very knowledgeable. They never fail to see me leave with a smile and a fresh stack of vinyl. I come over from Belgium every year and am counting the days till I can visit again! Thanks guys!

User

Instead of acting too cool for school, these guys will actually recommend something new for you, there's also handy reviews on the album covers. Hot damn.

User

I was honestly blown away when i went in. I went in on the off chance looking for something very specific which allthough they never had (Robocop soundtrack, like i said bery specific), the ammount of other stuff i was interested in was amazing. They had some really amazingly cool and niche records, if im honest it was probably the best and most eclectic record store i had been in!

User

I don't always find the record I'm looking for, but always end up being inspired to buy something else. Love the shop!

User

Great day yesterday for RSD got to the shop at 2am was good fun talking to other fans of vinyl. Almost got what I wanted mite have do an other nighter next year

User

Fantastic selection + Great service... great customer care, always very helpful... CDs always arrive between 3 to 5 days after I order them which is very very quick!

User

User

Called in for new Ryley Walker release ( excellent by the way ), came away with another superb disc by Miranda Lee Richards after hearing one track being played in background and having it highly recommended by member of the staff. Great shop, fantastic selection and fine and knowledgeable staff.

User

Best Record shop in the UK in my humble opinion. Brillant staff who are patient, really knowledgeable and helpful. They give excellent recommendations and advice and ace at communicating with customers and keeping you up to date with orders ect.

User

Ace ,me and the monkey's loved it in there yesterday

User

One of the best places to find new vinyl in Manchester, there is a lot of rare and obscure pressings. The the more run of the mill stuff the other shops are usually a bit cheaper.
