Planet Theatre Productions was established in April 2009 by Sean Garvey and Adrian Brown, while presenting Ranjit Bolt’s translation of Moliere’s classic comedy The School for Wives at the Gatehouse in Highgate. When this play won the “best production” category at the 2010 London Fringe Awards, it was immediately followed by the Elizabethan seminal ‘horror story’ The Spanish Tragedy. This was presented at the Rose Theatre on the South Bank, which was the site of its original production in 1597, and was followed shortly after by Ostrovky’s manic farce Too Clever By Half at the Waterloo East Theatre. The Company achieved a significant step forward when it initiated the 2011 Terence Rattigan Centenary Year by presenting, in association with Jermyn Street Theatre, the World Premiere of the playwright’s “lost” romantic comedy Less Than Kind. Ecstatic four-star reviews from all the major critics in the entire national press received by this production, plus a generous grant from the Stage One Fund for New Producers, prompted an eight-week tour in Number One provincial theatres early in 2012, this time in association with the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Guildford, where its enthusiastic reception now leads the way to an even longer UK national tour in 2013.

2013:

At the same time, Spring 2013, the Company is producing a play specifically for children, Katie and the Mona Lisa, which will be the first-ever presentation of James Mayhew’s popular series of books for children Katie’s Picture Show. Planet Theatre additionally holds the rights to several other dramatic properties, including two musicals, and aim to put these into production as soon as all the components are in place.

‘Less Than Kind’ is the ‘lost play’ by Terence Rattigan which astonished the critics when its premier, earlier this year, opened the celebrations to mark the centenary of the writer’s birth, and reaffirming his reputation as one of England’s greatest dramatists.
