P&O Ferries Choir Description

It’s almost hard to believe that the P& O Ferries Choir has been going strong since June 2013, and now over four years later they’re busier than ever.

Since being formed for BBC TV’s ‘The Choir: Sing While You Work’ Series 2 in 2013 they’ve sung with TV personalities, global superstars - even for royalty - and they never imagined they’d be quite as in demand as they have been. And with local and national press, magazines, radio and TV interviews – it’s been an exciting adventure so far!

In 2014 the choir was only just adjusting to life after their win when they were asked to join Susan Boyle on her first ever UK tour at The Eventim Apollo (formerly The Hammersmith Apollo), London. The choir joined Susan on many of her popular songs with the finale of ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ to rapturous applause.

Just when they thought things would quieten down somewhat they were invited to perform at the BBC’s Last Night of the Proms 2014 alongside Earth Wind & Fire, Rufus Wainright, The Shires and the late Terry Wogan. Here they entertained crowds with a Mary Poppins medley and again later in the evening with a live link to Ruthie Henshall and the orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall.

Early 2015 saw them perform at The France Show at London’s Olympia as well as various local events including the Dover Community Regatta and The Salutation in Sandwich - home of Dom and Steph Parker of Gogglebox fame - where they helped to raise funds for local charity Martha Trust. In May they performed in Calais at the stunning Église Notre-Dame de Calais raising more charity funds and entertaining friends, family and supporters alike.

November 2015 saw the choir perform live at the British Travel Awards to a large audience of travel industry folk, they then sang for HRH Princess Anne at the ‘Mission To Seafarers’ Christmas carol concert in London as well as on board The Spirit of France for the P& O Ferries Christmas Fair – a rocky and memorable trip indeed!

Despite their busy schedules, the choir concluded 2015 by releasing their very first album ‘SHIP TO SHORE’, a choral collection that mixes Classical, Gospel, Irish Folk and Pop and includes popular pieces performed on the BBC programme. The album was recorded at St James’ Church Paddington in early September and is something the choir is very proud of. The album is on sale at choir concerts and on board the Dover to Calais ferries.

2016 saw the choir performing at the prestigious UK Shipping Dinner at London’s Park Lane Hilton Hotel and they were the guest choir of X-Factor ‘Popera’ stars G4, as they recently returned to the music scene with their ‘Back For Good’ tour. The choir joined the accomplished quartet onstage at the Leas Cliff Hall, Folkestone on 21st April and performed ‘Barcelona’, ‘Nessun Dorma’ and ‘You Raise Me Up’ among other popular pieces.

July 2016 saw them return to the stage at the ever popular Leeds Castle Classical Concert alongside the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra as well as being invited back to Dom and Steph’s Salutation Summer Prom for the Martha Trust charity which was another huge fundraising success.

In September 2016 the choir returned from a successful trip to New York City where they performed at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine as well as at a joint concert hosted by the New York City Bar Chorus. The choir had a wonderful trip and are hoping to return to the city in the future for other projects.

The remainder of 2016 saw the choir return to Calais to perform their very own concert at Église Notre-Dame de Calais as well as performing at various Christmas events including The Dover White Cliffs Christmas and their very own concert in December at St Mary in Castro church at Dover Castle.

The choir have attended a number of dates already in 2017 and look forward to the remainder of 2017 representing their local community with live musical performances as well as working on charity events, their annual summer and Christmas concerts and visiting other parts of the country and Europe.

We were very pleased to be asked back to perform for the second year running at the St George's Day dinner, organised jointly by the four Rotary Clubs of Deal, Dover, Sandwich and South Foreland on Saturday 27th April 2019.
John Utting (organiser), said of our involvement at the event:
'In 2018, we asked the P&O Ferries Choir if they would like to perform pre-dinner for our audience - they were fabulous, the obvious joy they have in singing was wonderful to see - they were t...he 'Stars of the evening’ and just wowed us all. This year we have, for the second year, again been fortunate to have the fabulous P&O Ferries Choir with us and they will end their performance by leading us into the finale patriotic event.
Over the past five years the event has raised in excess of £8,000 for charity, ranging from The Royal British Legion, Rotary Foundation End Polio Now Campaign, local First Responders, RNLI. This year we are raising funds for Porchlight - the charity providing support and help to local homeless people.'
So far it is estimated that the event has made a fantastic £1,000 and we were thrilled to have played a small part in this!

On behalf of our lovely Soprano Julie...
Julie's sister Sarah and her partner are running the Brighton marathon in memory of their lovely Mum Pat, and to raise money for the Pancreatic cancer charity.
Sarah has told us that they have almost raised £3000 - which is fantastic! - however, they are £138 off of the £3000 - ONLY £138 to go!
... Please forgive us for asking as we appreciate charity requests are rife, but if you are able to sponsor any amount no matter how small, we may be able to hit the £3000 target together!
We will post a video of a new song performed by the choir at Friday's concert (in full!) early this evening as a thank you.
Thank you all for reading ‚ù§
