Gout - Who gets it?... 1 in 200 people are affected by gout - more men than women. It tends to appear in middle age but can also run in families. Gout is the result of an imbalance of uric acid in the body and a build up in the blood. Small crystals may form which collect in a joint causing irritation and inflammation which can be painful and severe. Main symptom is waking in the middle of the night with an acute throbbing pain in a swollen big toe. Pain can go away and not return for a few months. Leading a healthy lifestyle can help and if you visit your podiatrist, they can alleviate pressure by adapting your footwear with orthotics and appliances for comfort. The podiatrist can work with the health care team if you require further investigation. Contact me for an appointment to discuss your care plan.
