#DidYouKnow that the term 'genocide' (genocidium) was introduced into international law by the great Polish lawyer Rafał Lemkin? #PL100🇵🇱
It was used for the first time in the indictment in the trial of German #WWII criminals in Nuremberg. Lemkin was then advisor to Robert H. Jackson, the chief prosecutor from #USA.
The dramatic experiences of #WWII gave the Polish lawyer a global endorsement. As a result of Lemkin's efforts, in December 1948 the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. He himself was nominated for the Nobel Prize ten times.

In 1848 - towards the end of his life - Fryderyk Chopin visited Britain, where he performed in Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh and London.
The artist's concert in London's Guildhal turned out to be his very last public performance.
Take time to discover tributes to brilliant Polish composer, which incl. statues in Manchester & London or his piano displayed in Hatchlands Park in Surrey #PolishGemsUK

#PolishGemsUK: The life of the ‘greatest artistic chronicler of our times’ & ‘astonishing draughtsman’ Feliks Topolski, was far from ordinary.
Topolski illustrated books of George Bernard Shaw and portrayed prominent politicians. He also worked as a reporter on many battlefront of the Second World War, documenting struggles of the Battle of Britain and the formation of Władysław Anders’ army.
Today his rich legacy includes countless drawings, illustrations, murals, and paint...ings including a colossal wall painting depicting the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in Buckingham Palace.
You can visit the artist’s former studio, located near Waterloo station, which became a café-bar featuring his art.

The Polish-Bolshevik war affected the fate of humanity – this is what Edgar Vincent d'Abernon, the British ambassador in Berlin and a member of the Inter-Allied Mission to Poland in 1920 claims. He described the Battle of Warsaw as the eighteenth decisive battle in history. #DidYouKnow that the victory of the Polish army not only saved Polish independence regained after 123 years, it also stopped the Bolshevik offensive on Western Europe? #PL100🇵🇱
This is also why the battle ...is called the Miracle on the Vistula, and on August 15 – to commemorate the triumph of Polish soldiers – the Feast of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Poland is celebrated.
It is worth recalling that foreigners also fought on the Polish side in the Polish-Bolshevik war. One of them was the future president of #France Charles de Gaulle, to whom Poland awarded the Silver Cross of the Virtuti Militari Order.

Ever wondered why there is Poland Street in popular London’s entertainment district Soho?
Its name derives from a former pub on this street, which had been named in commemoration of the 1683 victory of 🇵🇱 King John Sobieski over the Turks.
The street was also a location of the Polish Legation in London (1786-1788) #PolishGemsUK
