POOLE'S CAVERN & BUXTON COUNTRY PARK

Poole'S Cavern & Country Park Description

Poole's Cavern has been visited since at least since the 16th century and described as one of ‘The seven wonders of the Peak’. Visitors are escorted in comfort and safety through the beautifully illuminated chambers by expert guides who will unfold the fascinating story of the cavern’s history, myths and legend.

Over 3000 years ago, cave dwellers sought refuge in Poole's Cavern Archaeologists have discovered thousands of remains many of which are on display in the Visitor Centre.

Enjoy a lunch or snack with us at the cavern cafe with homemade cakes and daily specials on offer, or picnic in the grounds or country park.

Above ground complete your day and take a stroll through Buxton Country Park, 100 acres of beautiful sheltered woodland, meet Charlie the quarry man and other woodland sculptures along the way, to Solomon’s Temple viewpoint with commanding views of the Peak District from the summit of Grin Low at 1400 feet above sea level.

Weather permitting the visitor centre and cafe will be open this weekend and cave tours as normal. Probably the warmest place in Derbyshire is underground, no wonder our ice age ancestors lived in caves.

User

Our visitor centre and cafe will be closed today March 1st due to the weather conditions

We've been keeping quiet about this but there has been some very exciting work going on in the cavern to really bring to light the incredibly beautiful rock and crystal formations at Poole's Cavern. We will be revealing what we've been up to in the coming week, but here's a clue, do you know that Stalactites can naturally glow in the dark ?

Buxton mountain rescue assisted an injured walker from Solomon’s temple today. Thank you to the dedicated volunteers and please consider donating when you see a collecting box anywhere in the Peak District to keep this valuable service going.

We took the children for a day out exploring the cavern and surrounding woodlands. We had an amazing day, the children loved the interesting history behind the cavern and the guide was very knowledgeable. Beautiful scenery and lots of areas to relax and enjoy a picnic. Would highly recommend the walks and a visit to Solomon's temple.

Was here yesterday, really enjoyed the tour of the Cavern. Our guide (Martin - I believe) was excellent, my four year old boy didn't believe daddy that it was Batman's cave though. I would also highly recommend the walk up to Solomons Temple as well, we got lucky as the weather was really good, but the view when you arrive is fab! Lots of different routes you can take up to it as well. Finally after a good 4hr plus there we had a bite to eat and a coffee at the cafe, which is also dog friendly. Good half day and would recommend.

Visited yesterday. Fascinating place, our guide Ashley was brilliant, very knowledgeable & made it interesting. The cave is well lit but cold; you definitely need a warm jacket. The cafe was good, very reasonable prices. Recommended if you are in the area.

Visited late on a Friday afternoon on a whim and was pleasantly surprised. Warm welcome in reception and a brilliant guide called Luke. Very informative and stunning caves. Beautiful, eerie and a great place to reflect on how a stalegmite takes tens of thousands of years to form and we are gone in the blink of an eye.. Well worth a visit.

Visited for the first time yesterday. It's It's a great place guide was fab. Cavern was huge. Would recommend it. Gift aid ur ticket and it's valied for 1 year. Take a coat as it's always 7oC in the cavern. Park land is great too. Very steep and muddy so good walking shoes advised.

Really good experience. 8 year old loved it too

User

Really enjoyed this tour of Pooles Cavern it was much bigger than we thought it would be and very interesting to listen to the history of the cavern over the years. The tour guide called Ben who had been going in the cavern for thirty years and worked there for a long time and had witnessed many excavations was very informative and had a good sence of humour too. I have been visiting Buxton on and off for years but this was the first time i had been in the cavern and now wish we had visited before. If the weather is good walk up to Solomons Temple on the hill above Buxton for the view, all in all a good end to our day in Buxton.

User

Came to see santa today on a lovely snowy day. I thought the santa visit was perfect for the kids. We particularly appreciated the personal touch of having their names ready on the gifts in the sack ready for them. And we were not rushed at all with Santa. Cave looked lovely all lit up. Excellent for snow ball fights outside too! Thank you

User

Absolutely brilliant tour! Lauren was wonderful with the kids and very informative. This tour is excellent value for money, compared with other much more expensive tours in the Peak District. All the staff were friendly and helpful and the range of educational books was much appreciated. To top it off the caves are beautiful. Can highly recommend!

User

Visited to see The Butterfly Theatre Company's production of Alice in Wonderland. The show was absolutely fantastic and the cavern was used brilliantly. The only downside was that, despite the last show starting at around 9pm, the cafe was shut for anything other than basic tea, coffee, etc which meant that all of the people, around 30 in our group, wanting food couldn't get any and potentially valuable revenue lost.
