About Porridge And Rice
Porridge and Rice supports schools in the Nairobi slums to enable them to break the cycle of poverty.
Porridge And Rice Description
The aim of the charity is to enable children living in extreme poverty in the Nairobi slums to receive a quality education. Porridge and Rice works with community schools to deliver a holistic and human-rights based education for some of the poorest children in the world. To this end, the charity will aid in the building, management and running of schools, feeding of the pupils, health checks, and training of teachers. For example, until November 2013, at Excel Emmanuel school children were taught by candle light for the first hours of the day. Porridge and Rice provided the funds to enable the school to place a light and double electrical sockets in each classroom - just over £100 was needed to cover the cost of both materials and labour.
Through poverty or neglect, as many as a quarter of the pupils arrive at school each day having had no breakfast and with no prospect of lunch. Porridge and Rice runs a feeding program at each school that it supports so that no child has to learn on an empty stomach. For as little as 3p per day, the charity can provide a breakfast of porridge with sugar. The first feeding program was launched in March 2014 at Edexcel Emmanuel School for 300 pupils. The feeding program will include breakfast (sweet porridge), as well as lunch (rice and bean stew) and a piece of fruit for every student and teacher - Monday to Friday.
As of February 2016, Porridge and Rice partners with 6 schools representing over 2000 pupils.

Thank you for visiting the Porridge and Rice stand at yesterday's ST George's Day event.
The children of the Nairobi slums did not choose to be born into poverty. Surely, they deserve a chance to break free from deprivation.
Porridge and Rice is cultivating Sukuma Wiki both for the Feeding programme and for sale. Sukuma Wiki is extremely nutritious. It is related to collard greens and kale.
Anti-FGM seminars are held regularly at Porridge and Rice schools. Local people talk to pupils about the myths surrounding the practice and the reasons why ending it is good for all members of society.
