About Portsmouth Cathedral

Portsmouth Anglican Cathedral is the Mother Church of the Diocese of Portsmouth, a geographical area including south-east Hampshire, Portsea Island and the Isle of Wight.

Portsmouth Cathedral Description

Transformative worship, challenging discipleship, generous hospitality and prayerful engagement. That is what we are all about at Portsmouth Cathedral. Portsmouth Anglican Cathedral is the Mother Church of the Diocese of Portsmouth, a geographical area including south-east Hampshire, Portsea Island and the Isle of Wight.

For centuries this building, the Cathedral of the Sea, has watched, listened and helped the people of Portsmouth navigate the passage of time. It has witnessed war and peace, famous marriages, been bombed and rebuilt and remains a building of greatness and simple enduring beauty. More than this it is a vibrant and lively community set at the heart of the city and diocese of Portsmouth, responding to the call of God to meet people’s needs and equipping the whole diocese to share the love of God in Jesus Christ. ☩

You can now book a place on the Creative Spirituality Quiet Day!
The day will follow the theme of journeys, reflecting on what we learn along the way, what we take with us and what we might choose to leave behind.
We'll meet for coffee at 9:45am in St Thomas' Chapel, the oldest part of the Cathedral, and start officially at 10:00am. Guests are invited to bring their own lunch. Refreshments will be available throughout the day and we'll aim to finish at 2:00pm.
... There is no charge for the day, but a suggested donation of £5 per person (or whatever you can manage) would be appreciated.
This event is open to anyone who would enjoy a creative, reflective workshop, with elements of mindfulness and self-care and you can book your place here: https://bit.ly/2XB7RGv

‘It is finished.’
My days are few, O fail not With thine immortal power To hold me that I quail not ... In death’s most fearful hour That I may fight befriended And see in my last stride To me thine arms extended Upon the cross of life.

What a stunning cathedral, I had my wedding here in 2008 and I’m extremely lucky to be renewing my vowes here again this year to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. I cannot think of anywhere better

It’s a very beautiful special building and the people are very kind, helpful and welcoming

User

We go to the Cathedral and see all the very lovely people there, the staff are always helpfull there and it is a nice place to be and go to.

User

Warm and friendly. Excellent music and very uplifting experience at midnight mass. Particularly liked the gym singing and the organ music. Really great choral singing by the choir too.

User

One of my favourite churches.

Ancient, yet modern, light, spacious, refective and reverential feel to the place.

Tremendously friendly Dean and Chapter, staff and clergy.

Always a pleasure to visit and work there.

User

Magnificent Carol Service - well done to all concerned!

User

Love this cathedral. All the love that went into it on its completion in 1990/91 will never be forgotten. Many thanks to the then Provost David Stancliffe.

User

Love the old and the new.. so much 'presence' and history with a modern day spirit including the arts. A special place.

User

It's a beautiful cathedral! What’s not to like?

Lovely place combining lively and fun activities with beautiful peaceful environment for reflection and rest

User

I was at the Cathedral yesterday to attend the Celebration the WRNS 100 Anniversary. It was a beautiful service that was very well organised and very moving. The readings, the sermon, the hymns and the choir were perfect. To see the ladies that are still serving and the ex Wrens taking part made me so proud to be a small part of that 100 year history. Wonderful to see The Princess Royal there too.

User

I received a welcome from staff and clergy when I visited this beautiful Cathedral that literally warmed my soul. Heaven on Earth.

User

For me me it is the most beautifull Cathedral in the Uk, I wood like to do an oil painting of it one day

User

Came with Tamesis Cathedral Singers to sing Evensong on Saturday. We received a very warm welcome and had a great time. Especial thanks for the tea, coffee and biscuits after our rehearsal - very welcome! And what a wonderful situation, so close to the old sea walls where we walked afterwards.

User

Came across the Cathedral purely by chance on a walk around Old Portsmouth. We were welcomed inside by a very knowledgeable verger who spent a good 10 mins explaining lots of interesting facts about the Cathredal. Definitely well worth a visit if you're in the area.

User

Attended a service in memory of our fallen shipmates and I would like to thank the ladies who took the time to make us welcome and ensure we got refreshments after what is a very emotional service for a lot of us .

User

An excellent pancake and planetarium event at the Cathedral yesterday - my littlies thoroughly enjoyed it. A big thank you to the volunteers that make these events possible.

User

A very beautiful cathedral a service was in progress when we entered it was so peaceful & tranquil sat in the background listening & the choir was so soothing we wandered about looking at the building outstanding brick work remember the church from many years ago when i use to live in portsmouth

User

wonderful Christmas service yesterday! Perfect start to our Christmas day. The choir and musicians were superb.

User

Had a fantastic afternoon there yesterday. My son Mark James was ordained from Deacon to Priest, a very proud day. My daughter Sarah and I both commented on the music, it was just so hauntingly beautiful. The cathedral itself is a stunning building. A truly lovely experience. Judith Dawkins.
