About Positive Pet Training

Force-free dog training in Staffordshire Moorlands offering one-to-one training, group classes, behavioural consults and seminars

Positive Pet Training Description

At Positive Pet Training we have a combination of professional experience in both training pet and working dogs. We have a very strong belief that only force free, positive reinforcement methods should be employed in training a dog. The bond between owner and dog is a special bond that is only going to be hurt by scaring or hurting your fury friend.

We offer one-to-one training either at our purpose built training academy in Staffordshire or at your home. We also offer group classes (limited to four dogs per class) and behavioural consultations. We run seminars on areas related to canine behaviour and training too. Ian Russell our trainer is a registered member of the Association of Pet Dog Training (APDT) and has trained detection dogs for ten years in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps and has handled these dogs in Iraq and Afghanistan.

On our website and during training we only offer force-free products for sale which conform to our ethos.

After a busy day with two introductory seminars run it’s great to unwind with some play and training with our boys!

A huge congratulations to Ollie and Jess who passed their APDT Good Companion Progress Award this week! They really earned those silver medals! 🥈
The level we work to in Progress is very high and we do all our exercises and games with real life in mind! Both Ollie and Jess (and their guardians) have worked really hard and improved in so many ways over the course!
Going for gold next!!

The lovely Jess showing off her recall, she isn’t feeling well today so a big “get well soon” from all of us here at Positive Pet Training!
She did amazing again for her vet check at home with our PawSquad vet Dr Katie today too!

User

This is the gorgeous Teddy (bear)🐻 !!
He’s only five months old but finds people really scary and so barks a lot. He had a behaviour consult with our vet Dr Katie this week and did so well!!
To be near a stranger is really hard for this little man and he was able to do that and lots of other hard work as well as pose for some lovely photos. He did fantastic!
... With some more rehabilitation we should get him enjoying meeting new people, being more confident and being easier to live with for his family!

A full house of puppy graduates this week!
All passing their PPT Life Skills course and their APDT Good Companion Puppy Award!
Fantastic work Luther, Henry and both Ambers! Hope to see you all soon for the Foundation course to continue improving and to earn your bronze medals 🥉

User

Buster did great and passed his Life Skills course and his APDT Good Companion Beginner Award this week!
Well done Buster! 👍

User

The stunning Jess is back to working without distractions now that the grass seeds are out her ears!
She worked really hard in class yesterday but took a little break to pose for a photo! Even this is a massive step - jess used to jump up at everyone she met, now she can do lovely greetings and sit for photos even when the “treat lady” is the one doing it!

User

Ollie showing off his targeting skills in our Progress class today! We used free shaping with Ollie to get his brain exercised as he worked out what it was we wanted him to do! He was tired by the end!
Great job Ollie and Jane! 👍

User

Some fabulous lead walks and greeting from our Saturday afternoon puppies class! They’re growing up so fast!
We train in the classroom and out! Firstly we need to make sure puppies can cope and then work up to real life situations like meeting people out on walks!
Dogs will always do what works for them! If pulling on the lead = going up to people, or sniffing that thing they want, then in future they are going to pull! Remember to make NOT pulling work for your dog so they keep on not pulling!

User

Our 10am September date is now fully booked and so we are offering an additional seminar at 2pm on Saturday 1st September!
Two and half hours of information for only £10 per family!! Tickets must be booked in advance as we are almost fully booked!
Our introductory behaviour seminar covers how dogs learn, dog body language and canine behaviour. Learn to understand your dog and help them to understand you too!
... The seminar is for humans only, no dogs please.
If you would like to attend group classes with us we ask you first attend a seminar to cover the theory behind the training. This allows us to have more time for practical training in class, as well as you understanding why we do the things we do!
All our training is science based and force free, we won’t do anything that hurts or scares your dog in order to change their behaviour.
We offer small classes with a maximum of four dogs per class, at a range of levels, as well as agility classes. See our five star reviews on here and on google to see what you’re missing out on!

Benny and Posie are both very cute puppies which started training with us this week! 😍
Just for fun can you guess the two different breeds they each have as parents?! (Four breeds in total!)

User

We are planning our next agility courses and want to know when you’d prefer them to run!
If you have a specific day let us know as we can be flexible and are going to be offering a few courses starting in the next few weeks!

User

Poor Jess got a pesky grass seed in her ear, but here she is letting out PawSquad vet Dr Katie scoping her ear without ANY restraint!
Jess used to find vets looking at her really difficult but here she is choosing to stay still, and eat her liver paste, even when her ear was sore! She’s on the mend now and did so well!!
Remember the grass is very dry and this time of years the seeds are everywhere! If your dog is scratching their ears or head shaking a lot it is worth getting them checked out!

User

In our Progress class yesterday Ollie and Jess did fantastic in the Positive Pet Training Cafe!
Relaxing in social situations is tough for dogs but a real goal for many guardians is to take their furry friends to the pub! We need to teach dogs how to cope and how we’d like them to behave beforehand, rather than just expecting them to know it!

Anyone with rabbits, guinea pigs etc. wanting some lovely fresh grass and meadow flowers?! We might get some for our tortoise! 🐰

Would highly recommend to anyone. Ian was absolutely brilliant. Me and Stanley (1 yr old Labrador) have both learnt a lot in the space of 4 hours. The training sessions were made fun and enjoyable. Stanley has definitely benefited from the positive training methods used. We look forward to coming back in the spring/summer for agility classes.

User

We've just finished our life skills for dogs course and would like to 100% recommend this dynamic duo Katie and Ian. We have loved every session and our little Zuchon Milly has come on tremendous with her training. Thank you so much and hope to continue more training in the future.

User

We take our dog Missy for 1 to 1with Ian. We all love going and we can't believe how much confidence Missy now has compared to when we first started. It isn't only Missy who has learned either, both Mick (my partner) have also learned such a lot. We love it so much that we have signed on for a second set of classes and hopefully we are going to sign up to the agility classes. Thanks so much Ian

User

We have just finished our first sessions of puppy training with a very lively cockerspaniel. We are first time dog owners and really appreciate the advise we have been given to help us with roly our puppy. I love the positive approach and makes perfect sense. We will definitely be enrolling on future courses.

User

We have just finished a 6 wk life skills course. Really enjoyed Katie and Ian's way of training . A very calm and common sense way of getting the best out of our puppy Stan with lots of interaction. We would definitely recommend their lessons .

User

We have a 6 month old Standard Poodle called Percy. Having just completed our 4 hours of home tuition from Ian we feel enlightened to say the least!

The results have been fantastic and we feel this is just the beginning of Percy’s(and our own) journey towards an enjoyable and rewarding future together.

Next step will be some group work at the Acadamy.

User

We had a great time and loved going to the classes :) really looking forward to going back with Bella and having some more fun :)

User

We are delighted with the amazing progress our German Shepherd puppy has made since starting training with Katie and Ian at Positve Pet Training. Loads of useful information, support and encouragement. Absolutely brilliant!!

User

The training has been great! We love doing chilled out work with our dog rather than old fashioned dominance based training - we feel we understand him loads more! Check them out!

User

The training I, and my dog Maisie have had has been fantastic. The advice is invaluable to any dog owner. I have owned dogs before and believed I was knowledgable but the course has really opened my eyes. Ian is incredibly calm and patient and is always willing to respond to concerns or calls for help inbetween sessions. I would genuinely recommend him to anyone owning a dog. There were days when I was struggling with Maisie, but Ian was readily available to offer suggestions and practical solutions. He was supportive and reminded me to be realistic about my expectations, and to focus on the progress Maisie and I were making.

Well worth it.

User

Really loving the training with Katie and Ian. Come away from every session very motivated. The emailed notes are very useful reminders of what to practice. It is by far the best training we have been to, our puppy has made unbelievable progress and loves going. The training is so very well delivered, it is clear, logical and enjoyable. Both Katie and Ian are really patient and caring. We cannot recommend them highly enough.

User

Myself, Lemmy and Dave have just completed the 6 weeks basic training with Ian. We have enjoyed every second and learnt so much more than we thought, Ian is great and has so much knowledge. We are amazed at the progress we are making, Its a life long commitment but well worth the effort. We have a happier more relaxed staffy simply from us understand her behaviour and having the knowledge to support her in a positive way. We will definitely be signing up to some more courses soon to continue our journey

User

Just finished some one to one workshops with Ian for ideas on brain games and scentwork for my dog to keep his mind busy as he is laid up with a bad shoulder. Thouroughly enjoyed our sessions (me and Scout) and everything was tailored well to him and his way of learning. Everything is positive reward based methods and I only wish I lived a but closer to do more . It's a great location too

User

Just been to one of Katie's free dog first aid seminars - excellent ! Packed full of useful information on what signs and symptoms to look out for, which problems need urgent treatment and what you can do yourself to help your dog if they have a problem. I would definitely recommend going to any future seminars that she runs.

User

Ian's training was so laid back but so effective! We got some great products to help and saved lots of money from not buying lots of useless training aids! Have recommended to all our friends!

User

Ian was so helpful with our Oska and changed how we think about his behaviour - so glad we went to Positive Pet Training. TOTALLY different to previous training experience I'd had! Me and Oska could not recommend enough!!

User

Ian was brilliant with Ralf and Phil and I have benefitted greatly from Ian's knowledge and experience. I can't wait to get more involved with Positive Pet Training and being able to integrate Ralf with other dogs with more confidence in his sociability.

User

I've recently been training with Katie and Ian of Positive Pet Training and I would thoroughly recommend them. They are both friendly, extremely knowledgeable, motivating and supportive and the training sessions were so enjoyable and useful for both myself and my dog Ollie. We've both learnt such a lot and Ollie's behaviours have certainly improved. I especially like that the behaviours are captured with the dog given the opportunity and encouragement to make good choices. Learning this way is so positive and builds confidence in us both. Getting personalised notes by email after each lesson was a real bonus and helped me to better understand what and how to practice throughout the following week. We're looking forward to our next course.

I have to admit I was a little sceptical at first about a training regime based almost entirely on reward. It didn't seem to match with a lot of widely held beliefs of how to 'master' your dog.

My dog, Norman, is a lively German Shepherd whom I 'adopted' at 15 months old due to his owners emigrating. I've owned a GSD before and I know how strong willed they are and how much damage they have the potential to do if all their (boundless) energy isn't channelled correctly, so I wanted to be sure to 'get it right', for everybody's sake!

Ian's methods are soundly based in modern science and backed up by his experiences training active service dogs for our armed forces in Iraq & Afghanistan...and they work.

Norman is an intelligent dog, very quick to learn & eager to please but he also has a mind of his own and a truly adventurous spirit, if he decides to 'go' he takes some stopping (about 40kg of muscle & pent up energy), even on the lead . We've had 4 hours of 121 training with Ian & Norman's progress can be described in one word... 'phenomenal', he's an absolute joy to own because he's now making his own decisions on how best to behave in various situations, and he (mostly!) chooses the option I'd prefer. Recently I've met lots of different people whilst out with him & they've all said 'what a beautiful dog ' (true, he's a handsome brute) and 'he's so well behaved', I love both comments, the first is due to his breeding, the second is largely due to Ian's influence.

One thing I must point out though, is that YOU (the owner) need to put the effort in, implementing the methods that Ian describes, it's a lot of repetitious work but so, so worth it. In conclusion, my thoughts are, if you want a dog with behaviour to be proud of rather than apologise for, give Ian a call and fix up some sessions with him.

My initial work with Norman under Ian's guidance has been very successful, we're (all 3 of us) now looking to extend Norman's training further....oh one thing I forgot to mention, Norman is a VERY HAPPY dog!

User

I have recently completed a 4hr course, over 3 sessions, with the trainer Ian and I can highly recommend this to everyone. The training has been very informative and effective. I used the training to help control my 20 week old Bull Mastiffs behavior when around my two young children and the relationship between the three of them now is excellent.

User

Excellent trainers, patient and very knowledgeable. Making a real difference and our dog really enjoys it. Very interesting too and they have helped us understand what makes our dog tick. Would strongly recommend Ian and Katie.

User

Can't recommend Ian enough. I've had dogs all my life but he's shown me a totally different way of thinking about it with fantastic results.

User

Amazing. I had a lovely rescue that had been very badly treated and had to lose a leg. I thought I needed to train him but that wasn't the case I needed to learn how afraid he was where I wanted to cuddle him he didn't know what was going to follow the cuddle so became really scared and panicked. I had to learn to watch when he wa scared and to leave him to come to me. We are now have much more fun cause I know what to look for. None of this would have happened with Katie and her knowledge will never be able to thank her enough
