Princess Theatre Description

The Princess Theatre is located on Torquay’s stunning seafront with exquisite views showing off Torbay’s scenic beauty. The Princess Theatre first opened its doors on Wednesday 7 June 1961. Top of the bill on the opening night were the late, great Tommy Cooper and the legendary Morecombe & Wise. In 1963 The Beatles appeared live on stage singing the then newly released single “She Loves You” causing some hysteria in the town!

The Princess Theatre is South Devon’s largest theatre with a seating capacity of 1, 491. The theatre is a touring house which means that the shows that perform here are brought to us by independent production companies. As such, our diary offers a wide variety of live entertainment from operas and ballets to concerts, comedy and pantomime as well as touring West End musicals. Big musical productions that have thrilled our audiences include Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Chicago, Starlight Express, Rocky Horror, Cats, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat with many more to come. Icons of the stage and screen Sir Roger Moore, Elaine Page, Joan Collins and the beloved Joan Rivers, have also graced our stage. Comedians Jimmy Carr, Alan Carr and Dawn French have performed here too and chart toppers Mumford & Sons, Jamie Cullum and Ronan Keating have included the theatre on their UK tours.

We are proud to work together with the local community to show-off the talented stars of Torbay, with shows put on by amateur societies and local dance schools. We also provide the venue for council lead events and we are incredibly proud of our award-winning Nativity project when primary schools are given the opportunity to perform their Christmas plays on stage free of charge.

All these great shows and performers excite our audiences and continue to do so today so get your theatre tickets right here from ATG Tickets!

**** REVIEW - HERALD EXPRESS NEWSPAPER ****
This is Elvis
Princess Theatre, Torquay
... ****
Opening in 1968 and charting the extraordinary success of Elvis’s NBC comeback special, this new show focuses on a specific time in the life of The King, and follows the events leading up to his first ever Vegas show at The International Hotel.
This is a show described as a musical, but which is actually a glorified tribute concert with a few bits of loosely strung together dialogue in Act One used primarily to set the scene and show us Elvis’s state of mind – he is just starting on his rocky road of drug use, his marriage to Priscilla is carried on from a distance, and his relationship with Manager Tom Parker is tense. But this was a major turning point in his career as close friends encouraged him to move away from the senseless movies he was forced to make and concentrate on his music career.
I use the term “tribute concert” with no derogatory intention at all. It is a first class performance and an impeccable impersonation by Steve Michaels. I just found the description a little misleading as this is not a musical as we understand the concept which I found a little disappointing as I would have liked a bit more background and depth to the life of such a larger than life personality who I know so little about. What dialogue there was seemed to be severely lacking in pace and there was an obvious lack of direction on the acting talents which were never really allowed to shine.
What I did see however, was a performance that was engaging, meticulous in its impersonation and a singer who worked tirelessly to carry a show. Steve Michaels is an award winning tribute artist and his presence and charisma undoubtedly are what make this show a success.
Act Two is where the work really starts to find its heart and its energy, as we are taken to a recreation of the live concert in Vegas and an opportunity for us to hear all of the great songs which we associate with this one of a kind star who shone so brightly for too short a time.
The band and backing singers were superb and the sound was balanced perfectly for the auditorium. For all Elvis fans who never had the privilege of seeing him perform live, I can imagine that Act Two will be an absolute treat and last night’s audience certainly appreciated the energy and style with which the “concert” was delivered.
This is Elvis runs at the Princess Theatre, Torquay until Saturday 4 August.

Check out our Facebook reviewer Sharon Coyde on 'This is Elvis' opening night last night.
This is Elvis is set in 1968 when Elvis's career is at an all time low and too many bad movies have played their part in bringing the "King" down. He has forgotten his roots in gospel and is on his uppers. Elvis is offered a lifeline and secures a TV show on NBC. Producer Steve Binder, who believes Elvis’s career is ‘in the toilet’ rebukes Colonel Tom Parker's original plan to have Elvi...s sing Christmas carols in a studio. Instead, he puts him on a small stage with just an intimate audience, and encourages him to sing whatever he wants to sing with the help of his musician friends. Elvis is a sensation and fanmail and offers of work flood in from all over the world with. Elvis and his friends want to go on the road playing to smaller audiences and playing tiny venues and returning to his gospel roots. Colonel Tom Parker ignores them and secures a hugely lucrative $500,000 deal playing a month's show in glitzy Las Vegas.
The second Act centres in the International Hotel Showroom in Las Vegas. Elvis runs through his greatest hits supported by his friends Joe and Charlie and backing singers and of course is a sensation - The King has well and truly regained his throne.
Steve Michaels certainly has the look of The King in the title role. Reuven Gershon and Mark Pearce are brilliant as Elvis’s trusted and reliable friends Joe and Charlie. The live music, all played on stage by an incredibly talented cast, is excellent – a special mention must go to Benjamin Stratton on guitar - some amazing solos. Also to the very talented backing singers. This is Elvis is a rollercoaster of over 40 iconic hits my personal favourite being "Love Me Tender". It gives you a glimpse of Elvis and his personal life and how he was manipulated by the Colonel who Elvis found honour bound to go along with. Fast moving and full to the brim with rock and roll classics, this production had the audience dancing and clapping along throughout.
This is Elvis runs at the Princess Theatre Torquay until Saturday 4th August.

We travelled down from Bristol where we have bigger theatres. Our first visit inside the Princess Theatre for the David Bowie Experience last night and we loved it. The show was awesome! What a quaint intimate theatre.

The staff were so much friendlier than what we're used to. The cafe area is great. Our drinks were reasonably priced and picking up our tickets from the box office was hassle free.

We'd go there again.

Watched the TOADS production of Oliver! Last night and I just have to say how impressed I was with the whole production especially with it being opening night where you expect to see a few hiccups!

The whole thing ran exceptionally smooth, from the scenery changes to the cast entrances and exits considering 50% of that cast were children!

For me the children where the stand out stars of this show, with their beaming smiles and dance moves that they had clearly rehearsed so much that there was not even one “side eye”to see what the rest were doing from any of them(which I did expect to see!)

Special mention for me personally has to go to the young lady playing Nancy, who could rival any west end actress and to the couple who played Mr and Mrs Sowerberry!

Good luck for the rest of the run and Well

Done to everyone involved! 👏🏻

Thank you so much to all of the staff working last night. I and my dad came to see A evening with Charlie Landsborough. I am disabled and in a wheelchair and my dad is a pensioner. We arrived at the box office to pick up our tickets and was directed on the best way to get to the next door cafe breezes avoiding any steps. We went into breezes and was helped to a table where my chair would not cause a nuisance to the other diners. The waitress service was brilliant our every need attended to and the food was amazing. we then headed to the entrance to the theatre and a staff member escorted us to our seats a chair for my dad and a space for me in my wheelchair. The lady made sure i knew where the facilities were and offered to bring us refreshments. During the interval a staff member escorted me to the disabled toilet and waited for me to escort us back to our seat. Again a offer to bring us refreshments. At the end of the show we were shown to a exit which was just behind where we were seated and went straight outside so we only had to contend with a small ramp and were not a obsruction to the public heading out of the main entrance.

As a disabled wheelchair user i have to say that i was overwhelmed by the way everyone helped me and my dad making the evening stress free and special.

Thank you so much we will definitely be returning.

A great first half watching the Magic of Motown on Friday 1st September, full of energy with great singing and dancing, really enjoyed it, singing along to all the old favourites of my youth. Staff were asking the audience to stay in their seats, although they could dance at the front or back of the auditorium. After the interval it became a bit of a free-for-all with many people standing up to dance at their seats and blocking the view for others, which meant they in turn had to stand up to see. Where were the staff then? Nowhere to be seen! We asked those in front to sit down, but they just ignored us. I saw very little of the second half (I'm quite short) and was very disappointed as I'd driven over an hour to get to the show. I won't bother going there again.

User

I have just tried to book tickets for "An Evening With English Legends Live"which was advertised in "The Princess Theatre Torquay" booklet, it states tickets from £10, I was a little disappointed to not be able to find any tickets for that price, so I phoned the Theatre and a very helpful man explained that the theatre has dynamic pricing??? which means according to how any tickets sold the prices can be varied ..I'm assuming always increased. so from the booklet to the booking we now have to consider if we pay £70 plus pounds more as there are three of us!!, I was advised by the man that its all in the terms an conditions. I would appreciate a message back to see just how many £10 tickets there

actually were, as this appears to be very misleading for the customer.
