*ABOUT US*

The Princess Theatre has certainly had a chequered history since it opened as The Capitol Cinema in 1932. Previously a hotel called Simpsons, it was rebuilt and opened on the 22nd June 1932 with the film 'The Desert Song'.

Built by Ben Culey of King's Lynn, the Theatre is particularly noted for its construction in Norfolk Carrstone and it contains the largest gable wall of carrstone in existence today. It was cleverly designed as a live Theatre as well as a cinema and live shows such as Fred Roper and his 20 Wonder Midgets, Private Lives and Rookery Nook were some of the opening shows to be staged in 1932.

After many years as a very successful cinema and Theatre The Capitol closed in the 1960's. It was then sold in 1974 and changed its name to The Kingsley Centre and provided summer seasons and films for approximately two years but declined and eventually operated as a Bingo Hall. After some time it closed again and was left almost derelict for several years until the Borough Council of King's Lynn and West Norfolk purchased it in 1981 under the Chairmanship of Mayor Leslie Dutton.

In honour of Lady Diana Spencer who, on her marriage to the Prince of Wales in July 1981, became the Princess of Wales, the Theatre was renamed The Princess Theatre. It was officially re-opened on the 5th of July 1981 with a concert starring The Wurzels.

In December 1988 the Princess Theatre was honoured by an informal visit from the Royal Family to the pantomime Cinderella. The late Princess of Wales and her two children Princes William and Harry, the Princess Royal and her two children Peter and Zara Phillips together with Lady Jane Fellowes all attended on Thursday 30th December at the 2. 30pm performance. The Royal Princes have privately attended many pantomimes since that date.

By 2010 the local council were funding the Princess theatre annually to the tune of £300, 000. Given the authority needed to save this money they close the theatre briefly prior to renting it to C and R Cinemas. Shortly afterward in November 2011 a note appeared on the door saying the building was closed and the keys were being handed back to the council.

In May 2012 Hunstone Productions, formed by four local businesses (Hallard Entertainments, Searles Leisure Resort, International Music and Leisure and James Johnson and Co Accountancy Ltd) took over the running the building.

Recognising how important the Princess Theatre was to Hunstanton’s economy they are now looking into how they can re-establish the Princess in the hearts of the Hunstanton community.

The Princess Theatre Box Office is now open every day of the year (except Christmas Day) and the programme provides a wide range of entertainment from Variety to Drama, Dance, Music, and soon to follow, Films.

WE ARE OWNED BY A PARTNERSHIP CALLED 'HUNSTONE PRODUCTIONS LLP'.

A 50th Anniversary Celebration Concert of the Carpenters Greatest Love Songs
20,000 tickets sold in Ireland plus successful tours of the UK, Holland and Belgium. Ireland’s most successful touring tribute show returns to the UK this September! The show’s creator and promoter Pat Egan says: “The success of the show is down to the outstanding high quality of the production, brilliant band and singers but ever more so the astonishing voice of Toni Lee recreating to... perfection the smoky tones of Karen Carpenter. No other Carpenters show comes near”.
The show’s Musical Director and arranger is Eugene McCarthy, a highly experienced musician of over 30 years who has worked with top Irish and international acts.
Toni Lee is unique, utterly unique in that she recreates the voice of Karen Carpenter like no one else alive. Her touring show “We’ve Only Just Begun” has been on the road now for over 5 years and it's simply the best Celebration of the Carpenters music to be heard anywhere in the world. The show features every Carpenter hit with an 8 piece big band and audio visuals of the Carpenters career highlights. It’s an evening of pure nostalgia where Toni Lee truly becomes Karen Carpenter.
Toni grew up in a music business family. Her dad was a professional musician and her mum worked as an agent, so Toni has been surrounded by bands and singers from an early age. When other kids were playing street games, Toni was packing her Dad’s car with his instruments and discovering what life on the road was all about!
She first came to national attention when she appeared as Karen Carpenter on ITV’s “Stars in their Eyes” which led to the creation of her touring show “We’ve Only Just Begun”, which this year will return to tour Ireland, the UK and Holland and will also visit both Australia & America for the first time. With 25 years’ singing experience, Toni Lee is the ultimate professional performer whose attention to detail and pride in her work is second to none.

We moved to Hunstanton just over a year ago. One of the attractions of moving here was the Theatre. We love it, and have seen numerous shows, real artists, tribute bands and plays. All have been excellent! The Sunset Bar is an excellent place to sit with a glass of wine or a beer, listening to live music, or looking out to sea and watching the sun go down. The staff have always been pleasant and helpful. We cannot recommend this theatre highly enough!

We are on holiday with my parents in hunstanton as it was my daughter's 14th birthday they gave us a treat by taken us to the Princess theatre for the summer show. There were 5 of us in the party and may I add that everyone of us was absolutely thrilled with the performance from start to finish. We were surprised by the quality of the dancing infact all the entertainers even the young people of the stage school. We were all amazed at the quality and selection of the music and that offcourse includes the singer's. As my parents are residents of hunstanton and frequently attends the theatre even they were agreeable surprised at the talent shown. We would like to thank you for the wonderful evening.
