In the twenty-eighth year of the reign of King George III, the British Government sent a fleet to colonize Australia. An epic description of the brutal transportation of men, women and children out of Georgian Britain into a horrific penal system which was to be the precursor to the Gulag and was the origin of Australia. The Fatal Shore is the prize-winning, scholarly, brilliantly entertaining narrative that has given its true history to Australia.

Drawing on the philosophy of Henri Bergson, Deleuze identified his work as “a logic of the cinema”, setting out to “isolate certain cinematographic concepts” philosophically.
To do this, he brings together diverse examples from a variety of major filmmakers, including Ingmar Bergman, Charlie Chaplin, Sergei Eisenstein and Alfred Hitchcock, among many others.

He is a member of the Bogey society, which is very similar to British society, but Bogeymen enjoy things which humans (called Drycleaners because of their contrasting environmental preferences) would not be comfortable around; for example darkness, damp, cold and over-ripe food. The book depicts the mundane details of Bogey life in loving detail, with definitions of Bogey slang and numerous annotations concerning the myths, pets, hobbies, literature, clothing and food of the Bogeys.

Across the world, city innovators are putting real sustainability into practice – from transforming abandoned public spaces and setting up community co-operatives, to rewilding urban nature and powering up civic energy. Paul Chatterton explores the power of these city experiments that harness the creative power of the collective, focusing on five themes: compassion, imagination, experimentation, co-production and transformation; and four city systems: mobility, energy, community and nature. Imagining radical alternatives, such as car-free, post-carbon, common and ‘bio-cities’, this is a toolkit for unlocking real urban change.

The stunning new edition of Redemption Song by Mike Marqusee, includes a foreword by political sportswriter Dave Zirin.
“One of the most important—and influential—pieces of sportswriting in the last thirty years. There is no better example of how to use sports as a radical lens to understand politics.” – Dave Zirin, from the foreword.

Exposing these global profiteers, Naomi Klein discovered information and connections that shocked even her about how comprehensively the shock doctors’ beliefs now dominate our world – and how this domination has been achieved. Raking in billions out of the tsunami, plundering Russia, exploiting Iraq – this is the chilling tale of how a few are making a killing while more are getting killed.
Around the world in Britain, the United States, Asia and the Middle East, there are people with power who are cashing in on chaos; exploiting bloodshed and catastrophe to brutally remake our world in their image. They are the shock doctors.

Popped in for a minute when we were in Hastings, and ended up staying half the afternoon. Relaxed and very attractive shop, with an amazing selection of books. A rare find these days.

User

Ordered a book as a present from the website. Really easy to use and swift delivery. Very pleased. Will be buying from you again.

User

Lovely shop - I'm very interested in social history and this shop is a little goldmine with plenty of books that I haven't seen anywhere else - have just finished Six for the Tolpuddle Martyrs by Alan Gallop which was a fascinating read and had hoped to pop in last weekend for the Robert Tressell biography I saw last time, didn't manage to get into town unfortunately but will definitely be going in to buy it soon!

User

I don't think I've ever come away from this shop empty handed - seems to stock every book I've ever wanted to read.....

User

Great little bookshop in a convenient central location in Hastings. Brilliant selection of politics, theory, history, psychology books, as well as plenty of quality fiction. Perfect for students, especially as you can order books in, and there's a student discount.

User

Great little & bright oasis in a part of Hastings that seems a bit forgotten but slowly coming to life. I loved the great choice of books offering food for thought & food for soul: from chuckly children's literature (very soulful) to provocative political texts (very thoughtful) and crafty creative books. I bought bell hook's 'all about love' which looks a bit like young fiction and certainly covers crafty, creative, political with ease.

User

Brilliant shop with a wealth of fascinating books and a great, friendly welcome. Just a brief visit has left me with quite the 'want list' and look forward to visiting again soon! Definitely recommended for the discerning book lover.

User

An excellent bookshop offering an interesting and unusual selection of books.

User

A great independent book shop with a really interesting range of books. I always find something new to spark my curiosity. They will also order books in for you if you want something specific. Very helpful.
