Priory Theatre Description

We're a community-run theatre that has been producing a range of shows since 1932 offering anyone with an interest in theatre the opportunity to get involved.

Typically producing around 9 productions a year, there is a broad mix of entertainment - comedy, drama and pantomime - that provides something for everyone whether you want to watch our shows, or get involved on- or off-stage. Our thriving Youth Theatre offers younger members of the community a chance to develop their acting skills building confidence and we're pleased that a number of them have stayed with us over the years.

We are a member of the Little Theatre Guild and are very proud of our standard of productions and our friendly atmosphere. We work closely with many charitable organisations in the area that regularly book performances at special rates to raise funds for their organisation

2 days until opening night of The Dresser.
The play tells the story of a fateful night in a small regional theatre during World War Two as a troupe of touring actors stage a production of Shakespeare's King Lear. Bombs are falling, the sirens are wailing, the curtain is up in an hour but the actor/manager Sir, who is playing Lear, is nowhere to be seen. His dresser Norman must scramble to keep the production alive but will Sir turn up in time and if he does will he be able to perform that night? Harwood based the play on his experiences as dresser to English Shakespearean actor-manager Sir Donald Wolfitt.
The play runs at The Priory Theatre, Rosemary Hill, Kenilworth from Mon 13th May – Sat 18th May and tickets are available online at www.priorytheatre.co.uk

The Priory Theatre in Kenilworth will be taking to the stage in May in Ronald Harwood’s funny and poignant play, The Dresser. His dresser Norman must scramble to keep ...the production alive but will Sir turn up in time and if he does will he be able to perform that night? Harwood based the play on his experiences as dresser to English Shakespearean actor-manager Sir Donald Wolfitt.
The Dresser explores the relationship between two men who are reluctantly and inevitably co-dependent.
As with another of Harwood’s plays, Quartet, which the Priory performed in 2018, the script was turned into a hugely successful film in 1983 with Albert Finney and Tom Courtney.
The play runs at The Priory Theatre, Rosemary Hill, Kenilworth from Mon 13th May – Sat 18th May and tickets are available online at www.priorytheatre.co.uk

The Dresser 13th - 18th May
During World War II, an embittered actor known to others as Sir is well past his prime. Formerly a renowned performer, Sir must now settle for leading a shoddy troupe of aged actors and army rejects in performances of Shakespeare's greatest plays.
... His anxiety, regret and age begin to get the better of him, and his work starts to suffer. Only Norman, a timid dresser who is unfailingly devoted to Sir, can hold the show together as it threatens to collapse.
