Today marks three years since the passing of David Bowie (1947-2016). His commitment to reinvention and visual presentation continues to have a truly enduring impact on the music industry. This portrait of the singer was taken on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Photographer Geoff MacCormack recalls Bowie's flaming red hair and eccentric clothing standing out against the sombre backdrop of snow-covered Russia.

Ian Dickson hitched a ride into London on the Roxy Music tour bus in 1973 and began establishing himself as a successful music photographer, recording numerous influential artists from David Bowie to Stevie Wonder. The year this photograph was taken, Stevie released his seventeenth studio album 'Fullingfullness First Finale', a record which took a more reflective, sombre tone than his previous work. It won three grammy awards, and spawned no.1 single 'You Haven't Done Nothin''.

This magnetic image of Robert Mapplethorpe and Patti Smith was taken by Norman Seeff in 1969. Seeff took this picture after a photo session with the couple at a friend's apartment in New York. Reflecting on this meeting, Seeff said "What was really profound was the depth of love the two had for each other. There was a piece in the book 'Just Kids' about how Patti wanted to get Robert a present for his birthday - it ended up being this skull necklace he’s wearing in the photo.... She bought them [the skulls] separately and strung them together.”
Our exhibition at Proud Central, 'Sessions in Sound: Photographs by Norman Seeff', closes this Sunday.

Lead singer of the Arctic Monkeys, Alex Turner, turns 33 today. Known for his sharp and witty lyrical style, Turner began writing songs at just 15, citing rap and hip-hop influences such as The Streets and Roots Manuva. When the Arctic Monkeys released 'Whatever People Say I am, That's What I'm Not' in 2006, it became the fastest-selling debut album in British history.

On this day in 1968, Jimi Hendrix was arrested for a day in Stockholm for trashing a hotel room. He was fined 3,200 Swedish Crowns, equivalent to about £200 at the time. In 2010, legal documents concerning this arrest, including a page signed by Hendrix in blue ballpoint pen, sold for over £8,000 in a London auction.

David Magnus captured this photograph of Brian Epstein and Paul McCartney during a break from recording at Abbey Road Studios. This was one of the last pictures of Brian with The Beatles, before his death later that year. In 1997, Paul McCartney famously said,"If anyone was the Fifth Beatle, it was Brian."

Proud Central is delighted to announce our first exhibition of the New Year; 'Mark Thompson: The World Distilled', a collection of contemporary landscape paintings by British artist Mark Thompson. Thompson is returning to Proud Galleries on the 18th January 2019, twenty years since we hosted his first solo exhibition. Based in Sweden, Thompson’s eerie and dramatic works are reminiscent of the barren landscapes and Nordic Noir aesthetic that surround him. Whether he is depicti...ng an empty building with closed doors and cavernous hallways or a panoramic snowscape of never-ending streets, Thompson’s work is unified by an intense aura of nostalgia, mystery and the uncanny.

Photographer Jane Bown took this image of three pensioners protesting outside Magaret Thatcher's home in 1980. Bown's photography became a regular fixture in the Observer during the post-war conservative years. In a profession dominated by men, Bown's eye for detail and consistent respect for her subjects allowed her to capture a diverse portfolio, recording protests, strikes, sporting events and pop culture icons. This summer, Proud Central displayed a collection of Bown's inimitable photography in our exhibition 'Jane Bown: The Observer'.

Photographer Norman Seeff photographed Joni Mitchell several times during his career. Seeff described how Joni was always surprising him during shoots; "She was always astounding. One minute, she is lying on the street using chalk to draw the outline of her body, the next moment I'm in her studio looking at her emotionally evocative paintings. After that, she's playing piano and introducing me to some new work. Later, we end up shooting her in her swimming pool." You can view... this image at Proud Central as part of our current exhibition, 'Sessions in Sound: Photographs by Norman Seeff', open to the public until 13th January.

2018 has been a fantastic year for Proud Galleries. One of the highlights was welcoming Sir Ray Davies, ITV News and the team from BMG to Proud Central in November. Ray was presented with this gold disc to commemorate 100,000 sales of 'The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society' since its release 50 years ago. Ray told ITV arts editor Nina Nannar of his plans to turn the album into a stage show!

It’s the last day of #12daysofproudchristmas. Since their formation in 1962, the Rolling Stones have had twelve number one albums. Describing this encounter with lead singer Mick Jagger, photographer Norman Seeff recalled, "I found he had a lot of presence and didn’t need to perform. I just love this moment when we were just sitting and talking. It’s just a Mick image." If you have yet to view our current exhibition 'Sessions in Sound: Photographs by Norman Seeff', Proud Cent...ral will be open today until 5pm.

Get lost! No, really. Get lost for 30 minutes, an hour or as long as you can stand analysing iconic to cult photography within an intimate space that has the backing of a true fan of the art of photography, Mr Proud.

It is so much better than sitting at your desk pretending what you do really matters.

Always ready to answer your questions, emails or phone calls. Nothing seems to be too much trouble. A small gallery, but packed with some wonderful photographs and the staff are lovely. Went to see the Marilyn exhibition wow there were some beauties. Will def go again.

User

A perfectly proportioned, pleasingly staffed gallery

The Photographing Prince exhibition was really good - loved seeing his personality come out through the images. It was a shame that the framing wasn't on point though. For the ££££'s they were selling for, I'd have expected better quality mounting & framing.

User

First time visiting today to see Marilyn Monroe photos - which were fabulous and most of them i hadnt seen before. Downstairs hosted some great photos of Rolling Stones Beatles and many more. Will definitely visit again
