About Purl London

Bringing new flare and creativity to forgotten libations from the prohibition era. We are passionate about forward thinking cocktails that combine complementary flavours & heighten the senses.

Purl London Description

Purl first opened it's doors in May 2010.
The word purl refers to an old English drink consisting of warm ale, gin, wormwood and spices.
The aim of the bar was to bring classic cocktails back to the forefront of London's drinking scene, whilst adding new flare and creativity to forgotten libations. Purl soon became recognised for its innovative approach to mixed drinks, that utilised culinary techniques to aid in the story of each and every cocktail on its list.
Today, we continue to imagine drinks that satisfy on a multi-sensory level, using aroma, fogs, airs, foams, food, bespoke serviceware and liquid nitrogen to bring the drink to life and transport the guest to another place or time.

We like people to book tables with us to avoid dissapointment on the door. We have a number of booths in under-the-road arches that are perfect for parties of eight or more.
We tend to play contemporary music with a lean towards swing /jazz /blues. We don't do dj's.
In addition to our rather tasty cocktail selection we serve three flavours of wine - red, white and pink. We also have a nice selection of craft beers and a few bites to eat.
We're situated on Blandford Street, which runs between Baker Street and Marylebone High Street.
Sadly, our excellent location also means we are somewhat restricted with our alcohol license, granting us opening times from 5pm until 11. 30pm Monday to Thursday and 12am on Friday and Saturday.

What a great find for us. Fantastic drinks. Super-friendly and passionate guys. Great night thanks!

Took my girlfriend to a private master class as part of her Birthday weekend and we had a fantastic time! Such a great atmosphere and all the staff are so friendly and attentive. Our mixologist, Gilberto, was a great guy and he explained the history, why we use certain ingredients and tailored the drinks and experience to best suit us. He really made the whole experience very enjoyable. Was really good fun to get hands on and the most elaborate and tasty cocktail I have ever had is definitely the smokey Mr Hyde! Will definitely be back!

This is certainly a hidden gem (quite literally), in the heart of Marylebone. I was unaware of it's existence until I delved below street level to find what only can be described 1920's time capsule. I loved everything from the quaint decor, candlelit alcoves, tasteful jazz music, attentive bar staff and the cocktails....well their one of a kind.

It has a very secluded yet intimate atmosphere, perfect for a first date. Let's just say i was whisked here on valentines day a few years ago. It's safe to say it went well as it still remains a favourite for me and my partner with added sentimental value.

Without a doubt the most enchanting place i've encountered.

Perfectly perfect drinks, presentation and the best service!

It's like stepping in to a secret world as you walk down the metal stairs and leave the hustle and bustle behind. Drinks are incredible and the staff friendly. We will be back!

I did the cocktail masterclass and it was an absolutely unbelievable experience. I learnt so much about mixology and it improved my current skills and knowledge immensely. Franco and friends were extremely helpful and so passionate about what they do, and you can really taste it in the drinks they make. I will be returning as soon as I can.

Great place: had amazing cocktail making lessons with Nicolas and enjoyed it massively. Would go there just to drink and try non-standard non-classic inventions too!

User

Great ambient, delicious cocktails, amazing infusions, friendly and knowledgeable staff.

I spent few hours there celebrating my bday and I do recommend this place to anyone that want something cosy...

User

Cracking cocktails, friendly staff.

User

Best cocktail bar I've visited! Lots of weird and wonderful cocktails. Friendly and knowledgable staff. Highly recommend if you are in London and fancy something a bit different. Can't wait to go back!

User

An all time favourite, been many times over several years with friends and it always serves to impress! Achingly cool, knowledgable staff and lots of jazz!

It stands out from other cocktail bars due to it's super cool setting and it's unique cocktail presentations which add a cool gimmick onto a delicious drink.

If you are looking for a special night out in civilised company, this is the place to go.

It is however very expensive (tend to spend around £40 a head) and over time the gimmicks have become less good (the best being one which came with a scone and a picnic hamper, the cocktail served in a thermos!) but the drinks themselves remain excellent and whilst perhaps not as good there are still some really cool ideas.

Also do some very good absinthe which is well presented and comes with an optional history lesson!

Can't recommend enough, will be returning for special occasions for years to come. Booking recommended beforehand.

I've been fortunate to enjoy Purl on numerous occasions. Always a voyage of discovery. Intriguing menu of cocktails. Stylish "discrete" booths and decoration. I like the fun speakeasy, dive bar vibe. Book in advance.

User

Cosy, below stairs bar. Lighting is very low which makes reading the menu quite difficult (we had to use the phone torch!) and also had to get the speaker turned down near us so we could hear each other. On the plus side, the cocktails were really interesting and unusual, and staff were attentive but not intrusive.

User

Very nice place!! Cosy, beautifully decorated as well. However I didn’t like any of the 2 cocktails I bought. Maybe just bad choices from me... but overall lovely place for to have drinks with friends or colleagues.

User

Nice quirky place but it did have abit of a toilet smell in there and we lacked atmosphere as it wasn't busy. Cool drinks and presentation. Nice we had a tunnel booth area. I'd recommend just one or two beverages there.

Dark and atmospheric warren of a cellar bar tucked underneath a sandwich shop in Blandford St, Marylebone. It’s busy, even on weekday evenings, but we were able to squeeze in without a reservation. The whole bar has something of a speakeasy theme. We were shown to a chandeliered alcove under a brick arch. It smelt a little dank, leather bench seats were hard and a bit uninviting, and the glass-topped table had a big chunk out of it that had been covered in duct tape. So more shabby than chic so far, but with a quirky charm. Purl prides itself on listing “multi-sensory” cocktails, with foam, fog, aroma and unexpected containers. So our request for an old fashioned and a gin & tonic must have really disappointed them. My companion is an old fashioned aficionado - his conclusion was that it was competent rather than mind-blowing. My gin & tonic was fine (hard to get wrong!) although they use BTW tonic water (made in Bermondsey, SE London) which is a bit sweet for my taste.

Gentle jazz soundtrack was nice, and the service was friendly and competent, although it was a little irritating to be reminded twice by our waitress that they’d be closing in half an hour – not sure if she was trying to encourage us to order another round, or to drink up and leave. Overall a nice end to our evening, but there are better and more reasonably priced bars in London with the same sort of speakeasy vibe.

User

Very disappointing experience, after being taken down to an empty basement we weren’t allowed to move to any of the many many empty more comfortable seats instead of two seats plonked in front of a piano. We would have even preferred to have gone upstairs as it seriously lacked atmosphere down there. Our cocktails were disappointing and when we upped and left no one checked why we left leaving our drinks. Poor customer service I’m afraid. Could easily have been rectified. We didn’t feel like valued customers. For the money u pay the customer service did NOT match.

User

The service was awful , we booked a table for 6 for a Christmas party and one of our friend decide to join us and was stop at the entrance by a very rude guy saying that we had a table for 6 not for 7 .. knowing that we had the table until 9.30 and it was only 9 o clock .

Also the waitress ask us to "stop talking because she had to repeat herself when she bring us our cocktails.. we couldn't believe that she actually talk to us in such a rude and disrespectful way , but the cherry on the cake was the "manager" coming and again like everyone in this pub in a very rude way told us that our friend couldn't join us and he had to wait outside and that we were rude people because we were rude with her Waitress... a joke ! We stand up and leave this crappy place and told the manager that before coming at us (even tough we are customers..) he need to listen and understand the facts , but he couldn't care less ..

in 6 years in London I never had such a bad experience, there is plenty of cool bar with much nicer people to go , avoid this place .

User

Rubbish, no room no tables got told to come back later, just an hour after opening, but didn't take a reservation so I guess we'd have got the same in an hours time. Drinks might be good but didn't get to taste any, which is kinda the point.

Went elsewhere and can recommend Reform Social and grill for far better service and some actual drinks.
