Do you know what questions to ask when choosing a home care provider?
Choosing a home care provider for a loved one can be a difficult and stressful decision. Here are some questions you can ask to help you:
- What are their standards for hiring carers? How many references do they check for each new hire? Does staff need a completed DBS (disclosure and barring service; i.e. criminal check) before they start work?
... - How are their staff treated? Are they paid for training? Are they paid for travel time between clients? Are they given enough time to travel between two clients?
- What training does staff receive? How many days of training? Do they do shadowing before they start?
- Will you have the same carer or will you have new ones at each visit?
- Does the provider have a positive rating from the Care Quality Commission (they are the independent regulator of all health and social care services in England)? You can verify on their website (www.cqc.org.uk) and typing in the name of the provider.
- Has the provider won awards? Do they have good reviews and testimonials?
- Can you speak with their current clients to get their feedback?

A role in care can be extremely rewarding and can be made very flexible to suit your work/life balance.
Becoming a carer and being available to care for our clients in their home at night can provide great reassurance to them, their families and loved ones and could certainly suit your work pattern if you are a night owl.
We offer our clients the reassurance that carers remain awake throughout the night, to provide the support they need, or our carers can sleep in the house a...nd be woken for assistance if needed.
We also provide the reassurance to our carers that there is always someone on hand to offer support and advice during the night, so you never need to feel that you are on your own in any situation.
If you are a night owl and available to provide care for our clients during the night, to keep your days free, then a role in care may just be what you are looking for.
For more information about the role of a carer contact the office today at richmond.kingston@radfieldhomecare.c o.uk or 0208 610 9778.
Radfield Home Care provides the necessary training to give you the skills you need to provide exceptional care to our clients and we offer additional training to enable you to develop further if you wish. It is equally important to remember that even with the training, this is a role that requires practice, but to help you do that with confidence, we introduce a shadowing period, where you will work with another carer closely as you make your initial visits.

Did you know that dementia affects different parts of the brain differently?
"Imagine I am 80 years old. There is a full bookcase beside me, as tall as me. Each book represents a memory or a fact. The top shelf holds the most recent books, such as what I ate this morning. By my shoulders are books from my 60s, by my knees are books from my 20s and by my ankles are books from my childhood. Dementia rocks my bookcase from side to side. The books from the top shelf fall first. A...s dementia progresses, my upper shelves will empty and I will be left with memories from my early life. This bookcase manages factual and biographical data such as faces, names, dates.
Imagine a separate bookcase that manages my feelings and emotions, which is made of solid oak. It is more resistant to dementia so the contents are safe from dementia for longer.
For every book on my factual bookcase, there is a corresponding memory on my emotional bookcase.
Why is this important? Because if you come to visit me on a nice sunny day and we go for a walk, eat ice cream and have a lovely time, I may not remember our day out, but I will be left feeling loved, happy, comforted. This is why we encourage anyone who knows someone with dementia to continue to visit them." Source: Dementia Friends Champions Information Session

Are you a night owl and a full time Mum?
If you are a full time mum, and only have evening and night hours available to work, that will fit around family life, then a role in care could be for you.
With flexible part time evening hours available, these could certainly work around your family commitments. We understand the difficulties sometimes in finding a role to fit around child care needs, school hours, after school clubs, supporting the kids with homework. The list g...oes on. An evening care role may give you the flexibility you need.

We were honoured to have been invited to EMAG (Ethnic Minorities Advocacy Group)at Age UK Whitton today to deliver a talk on Hoarding Disorders.
According to Hoarding Disorders UK, "compulsive hoarding can make life a misery, affecting health, well-being and lifestyle, and posing a significant risk of fire, illness, infestation and other dangers. Hoarding touches the whole family."
It is important to understand the underlying factors that lead someone to exhibit hoarding beha...viours. These can include fear of loss, sentimental values, inability to prioritise, fear of needing something in the future, etc. Supporting someone who hoards is not as simple as going to their home and giving objects away or throwing things out. It is about understanding the root cause of the behaviour, supporting them to find new ways of coping and helping them live in a safer environment.
If you know someone who needs help with hoarding behaviours, contact us at richmond.kingston@radfieldhomecare.c o.uk or at 0208 610 9778.

Did you know?
"Around 60% of people diagnosed with dementia will have Alzheimer’s disease. Although you can have Alzheimer’s under the age of 65, it’s comparatively rare. Alzheimer’s disease is a condition that gets progressively worse over time.
How does Alzheimer’s develop?
... Research suggests that changes in the brain can occur up to 10 years before a person starts to show symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. The symptoms are usually mild at the beginning and gradually worsen over time." Source: Dementia UK
