RAF Benevolent Fund Regional Director (Central/North England and Wales) Mark Quinn served in the Royal Air Force for 25 years following in the footsteps of his granddad who also served. As we continue our series of blogs from former RAF personnel who share with us their RAF centenary moment, Mark tells us about the moment that led him to discover more about his grandfather's RAF service. Read Mark's blog here:
Three Second World War veterans, George Thomson, Alistair Lamb and Vera Macleod were guests of honour this evening at a celebration of the RAF’s centenary in Edinburgh. The trio were joined by Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Hillier, Air Officer Scotland Air Vice-Marshal Ross Paterson and Air Vice-Marshal David Murray, Chief Executive of the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund, which organised the event. Funds raised from the evening will go to the RAF100 Appeal, supporting the RAF, RAF Benevolent Fund, RAF Charitable Trust, RAF Museum and RAF Association.

This December SAC Dean Payne will be leaving the Royal Air Force after seven years of service. For some, the transition from the RAF to 'civvy street' can present a number of challenges, and this has been true for Dean who with his wife, is expecting his second child. To support Dean while he makes this transition, we offered financial assistance so he could take some courses that will form part of his resettlement training. Our thoughts are with the family of Second World War veteran Cpl Ron Short whose funeral will be held today. Ron supported the RAF Benevolent Fund by donating his 90th birthday gifts. Later we returned the favour, ensuring he lived comfortably in his retirement. In this blog he remembers what VJ Day was like in Burma: http://bit.ly/2N5s0Qd

Today marks the 75th anniversary of the raid by Bomber Command in the island town of Peenemünde in the Baltic Sea. The raid known as Operation Hydra took place on the night of 17/18 August 1943 and struck at the heart of the German Army's research centre. Nearly 600 Bomber Command crews took part but sadly 40 aircraft were lost and almost 280 aircrew were killed, but not before bombs had been dropped, targeting those working on developing destructive V weapons and their facilities. Bomber Command pilot George Dunn shares his memories of the raid. Learn more: https://www.rafbf.org/news-and-blo…/pee nemunde-raid-75-years
The RAF Benevolent Fund supports many RAF personnel stationed abroad and we recently provided a grant to a base in Iraq, some of which went towards the renovation of an area where personnel can relax in the evening and enjoy some home comforts. In a new blog, a serving Flt Lt describes how these home comforts have made all the difference to the morale and wellbeing of those living away from home. I am so proud of the British RAF & thankful to them all for enabling our island set in the silver seas to remain free. They fought against evil & turned the war around with their bravery, & determination. Great Britain showed the world when facing tyranny the will of Brit's as fighters defending democracy & justice. God Bless the British RAF & thanks to generations of my own family with them all coming home safely with medals.

Although I'm a british-american, my heart will always be in the UK. In the past I have donated to the RAF benevolent fund, sadly being a pensioner now at 70 years old and handicapped I cannot donate, but if my situation never changes I will be back wholeheartedly. I love the RAF benevolent fund and the work it does.
A beautiful song. I wish it all of the luck in the world to make it to Number 1. I've downloaded mine.
When my husband passed away we had collection for RAF Benevolent Fund (this was his wish as he had served in the RAF many years ago and loved it). Our Funeral Director duly sent the donation with the request that it was acknowledged and we got a final total as a few people ha sent straight to RAF. Several months later I messaged them twice and all I got in response was "sorry we usually respond by letter. Still haven't heard a word. I would not donate to RAF again and wish I had gone with the charity that my late Mothers donations went to as we had a response from them within the week. In future any donations go to Help For Hero's.
