IT'S HOT!! β˜€β˜€β˜€
I'm sure many of you have seen posts circulating social media pages about being aware of how the heat affects your pets, what the risks are and how best to avoid them. Here are a few of my top tips from Raise the Woof for keeping your pooch cool in hot weather!
- Avoid exercising them excessively in hot weather! Although your usual routine may involve walking your dog in the middle of the day, with rising temperatures it is really important to consider how this... affects your dog. On a hot day you can wear shorts and a T-shirt, they are still donning a fur coat.Would you like to go on a run in a fur coat? Didn't think so! What about running them early in the morning or late in the day. Summer means lovely long days so why not enjoy a cool evening walk instead!?
- Choose your walks carefully - try and walk your dog in shaded areas. Woodlands are our favourite choice of walking spot during the summer. If you have a dog that enjoys swimming, why not take them to places where they can cool off in streams or lakes.
- Make sure they always have access to water. As with us, dogs may want to drink more as the weather gets hotter. It's important for them to stay hydrated but also cool down. Try popping a few ice cubes in their water bowl to keep it cool and fresh.
- Try home made cooling snacks! Grab an ice tray and pop some nice healthy food in it topped up with water. Freeze and offer them to your dog to chew on in hot weather! Cooked chicken bits (no bones) go down a treat. Why not add some dog friendly fruit in there?
- SHADE! Make sure your dog has access to shade during the hot days. If inside try and make sure they're in an area with as much of a breeze as possible and when they're outside make sure they have a nice cool place to relax.
Use the hose - when my dog gets too hot we pop round the back and gently cool him off with a quick shower. Make sure the water isn't too cold. Not all dogs enjoy the hose - mine doesn't! - so give them some treats if necessary to make the experience enjoyable and don't force it if they really resist it.
Get creative! - buy a water sprinkler or paddling pool for them to play with outside. This makes keeping cool fun. It's also hilarious to watch!
Lastly - PLEASE AVOID WALKING YOUR DOG ON HOT TARMAC DURING THE DAY. If you can't hold your hand on the tarmac for at least 15 seconds without taking your hand away - it's too hot for your dogs paws.
Stay safe in the sun everyone! and ENJOY!!

Shadow loves his Canicross so much he decided to share it with one of his best friends! The sun was out so we went over to Elvaston Castle for a quick blast around the grounds - what a beautiful place to take the dogs running!

Yesterday I teamed up with Emma Stevens BVetMed - Positive Dog Training to take her two gorgeous gundogs for a taste of Canicross. Neither dogs had ever been in CaniX harnesses before but they took to it like ducks to water! πŸ¦† Both dogs were running beautifully and responding well to commands to pull, slow down, turn left and right.
Canicross is a great way to get your dogs fit and well exercised in a way that is controlled and enjoyable for your dog! Not only are they exercising but they are also being mentally stimulated as they listen to commands and learn to respond on the move. If you think you're dog would benefit from running or you have any questions about CaniX and what it involves, please drop us a message! ❀️🐢

Had the pleasure of looking after little Guinness this weekend. Doesn't he have the most gorgeous face?! Both Shadow and I absolutely adored spending time with him and I think Shadow is missing him already! Thank you Emma Stevens BVetMed - Positive Dog Training for trusting us with him! 🐢❀️🐢

Really interesting read on the negative impacts of early neutering in dogs particularly as it pertains to behaviour.
There are many reasons to neuter your dog, including benefits to both health and behaviour, however the time at which you choose to do this can be crucial in the behavioural and social development of your dog. Emma is a brilliant dog behaviourist so if you have any questions about neutering and when is best to have this done, please drop either me or Emma a line! Her page is included in the link below :)

The weather is getting warmer. Please DON'T leave your dog in the car - 5 minutes is 5 minutes too long. DOGS DIE IN HOT CARS. If you see a dog unattended in a hot car call 999, you could save a life ❀️🐢

Thank you for looking after Guinness this weekend for me you made me feel totally at ease the whole weekend so I could relax and enjoy myself. I don't leave my dogs and I am very particular with who looks after them but with pictures and updates with how he was getting on I was relaxed with him in your care. Will definitely be asking you to take care of my dogs again!οΏ½οΏ½

Louise is absolutely amazing with animals. She looked after our dog and cat on two occassions and I could not have chosen a better person to do it. I always feel very anxious whenever I have to leave my animals , especially my dog, with anyone but I felt completely at ease when Louise did it as I knew she would look after them as if they were her own and spoil them rotten. She kept updating me with pictures all the time and I came back to two very happy fur babies.
