Reading & District Netball League Description

The Reading & District Youth Netball League was established in 1947, when the local education authority decided that there was a need for girls to carry on playing netball after leaving school, we do have netball trophies dating back to 1932 so netball in Reading has been going for 85 years. The league original consisted of 6 teams, with matches played on grass pitches in local parks. In 1964 'youth' was dropped from the leagues name because the age range of players had grown to include not only school leavers but mothers up to the age of 40. Relatives and league committee members would keep a watchful eye on babies and children from the sidelines, and the sport in reading was a very family-orientated affair. League matches were played at various courts including westwood school, alfred sutton school and kensington road. the number of teams steadily increased and the league included sides from Huntley & Palmers, Reading Athletic Club & Nalgo.

The league today is as vibrant as it has ever been in its fast approaching 7 decade history, with over 60 teams & more than 300 members playing across 7 divisions.

We are a friendly and competitive league, with netballers playing at all levels, ranging in age from 14 years to over 50. over the past 20 years the league fixtures have been played at Theale Green School.
