The penultimate round of the Youth Winter Boulder League 2019/2020 is on Wednesday 19th Feb! It starts at 6pm and has two categories: 7-12yrs old and 13-17 yrs old. It’s the new term for our NICAS Rock Monkeys and our route setters have designed a scatter board to train their route setting and problem solving skills. It’s in the yellow room so anyone can give it a go designing their own routes. We’ll be keeping the good ones for people to try as well!!!

Heel hooks and toe hooks can be a real game changer in making you a better all round climber. Particularly on steep terrain and caves, but they are applicable on almost all terrains. Knowing the right technique and application can help with finding rests on slabs and vertical climbs; helping you send those projects.

Have you ever noticed someone making random hand gestures while gazing up a route intently? This is route reading and it’s an important yet basic tactic for climbing more efficiently and ultimately better. So before you jump on something you’ve never tried before, spend a moment looking at the climb from the bottom to the top. Look at the angle and the features, is there an arête - the edge of the wall? Are the holds spread out or straight up, can you use the wall to smear an...d are there volumes that might aid you? Identify your starting position, spot those vital rests where you can get a one arm shake or even no hands rest, find out where you think the crux or cruxes might be and think through one or two ways of getting through them - the obvious approach might not work. A rest before and after the crux could be crucial to getting through the climb in one. And finally if you’re leading, look for the clipping positions!

Ho ho ho! Just a heads up that we are stopping GPS over Christmas so that our volunteers can take a break. It’ll stop on the 24th and start up again on the 3rd Jan. See you in the new year! 🎉

Just a heads up, we’ll be closed from Tuesday 24th to Thursday 26th December for Christmas. We’ll be open again as usual on Friday 27th December.
