"It was such a fight to get into Oxford. I had to fight to get teachers to believe in me. I had to fight past disapproving tones in voices, and teachers telling me that it would be hard work as a put off. The fact that I am here today is a symbol of how I refused to let other people dictate my future and that would be my first piece of advice to prospective black students, like myself, who are looking at coming here. I was also rejected post-interview... the first time I applied. I was completely overwhelmed by the expectation of others and myself, and I wanted so desperately to get it right. This affected my confidence and I answered interview questions in a way that I thought would be ‘right’ instead of thinking for myself. I decided to take a gap year after results, save up, travel and eventually reapply as one of my uni options. Picking myself back up and facing interviews again I decided to relax and just treat the interview like an intelligent conversation instead of a test where examiners were trying to trip me up. It worked, and I was over the moon when I received an offer. My advice is that you don’t have to change yourself or try to fit into a mould of what you think an Oxford student should be. Just be yourself authentically and don’t let yourself be intimidated, by anything or anyone; including yourself."

"Having lived most of my academic life from GCSE’s onwards in the foster care system, Oxford was not necessarily an obvious outcome for me. I went into the system at fifteen, and the rarities of LAC children (Looked After Children) going to Oxbridge or Russell Group Universities were very much known to me at this time. With my father being a South African, one of the many rules I was raised by was a statement made by Nelson Mandela: “Education is the ...

On the back of the disappointing admissions statistics, we have kindly had Regent's students offer to tell their story and to show that #thereisaplaceforyouhere.
***... "I am an undergraduate fresher at Regent’s. I was raised by an (amazingly inspiring) single mother who emigrated from Italy in the 90s, leaving behind the support of family and friends. Although we lived under the poverty line for a large part of my upbringing, my mother valued my cultural enrichment above all, frequently taking me on trips and following my schoolwork. I was lucky enough to receive a scholarship to do the IB for sixth form (I highly recommend looking into this for anyone who considers themself an all-rounder!). I never once felt discouraged from applying to Oxford because of class, or in fact race, since the application information solely emphasised the academics. It was a pleasant surprise to find Regents so inclusive and supportive, even financially, of students like me. I have yet to feel uncomfortable because of my upbringing: Regent’s feels like a large family, which never forgets or undervalues you."
