❗️JOINT STATEMENT ❗️ Between the Matthews Organisation and Reigate & Banstead Borough Council
We thought you’d be interested in the latest update on Reigate on Ice on behalf of both the Council and the event organisers:
... We’re all keen to see Reigate on Ice continue as it’s a welcome and popular event in Priory Park’s calendar.
There’s mutual understanding that the usual area for the ice rink can’t be used this year due to the ground compaction, so we’ve been working together to try to find a workable alternative. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we’ve been unable to find a mutually agreeable location this time.
Both parties are feeling positive and remain committed to working together on future events in our parks, including planning for Reigate on Ice 2019.
In the meantime, remedial works will take place over the winter so that the event space is ready for use again next year.

❗️UPDATED STATEMENT❗️
For any event to be successful it needs to be in a prominent position and we’ve built Reigate on ice to the success it is today because of its position in the last 4 years it can be seen from the road it’s easy accessible. We told the council officer back in July to go behind the tennis courts was not an option. It would not work for Reigate on ice. ... When we started 5 years ago we made a substantial financial loss, and it’s only because we was allowed to move to the Bell st end of the Park Reigate on ice continued. We’ve sent emails in suggesting alternative locations Bell st end but have been refused. We’ve offered to get a local farmer to do the ground repair straight after the event who has all the correct equipment to carry this out and make the ground not compacted and repaired to a high standard at our expense. Back to the location offered as we’ve said in our last statement the logistics of getting all the equipment across the park in the winter months would likely cause ground damage. Reigate on ice have lots more trucks and equipment now than in year one. It’s also not just about paths and lighting it’s the openness to the elements of the weather, when it blows it catches the big top quite bad and like we’ve previously said we nearly lost the big top. Also in all meetings and emails with Reigate and Banstead not once has any offer of help been mentioned until today. We very much doubt the council would be willing to compensate us if we make the financial loss as we did in year one. After 3 months of trying to negotiate an alternative spot it’s only Monday morning we received an email offering us alternatives what we said was not suitable back in July.
We would like to thank everyone for the overwhelming support we’ve received today on social media phone calls private messages ect. We would like Cllr Horwood to please rethink his decision and let us go back to the usual spot or nearby as we have road access also a tap to water the ice rink and shelter from the wind. We will also reinstate the ground after the event and make sure the repair is to a high standard. One more point though ! If the ground needs rest why did Run Reigate have a big Marquee and Toilets on it last week ? I did ask this question but it’s not got answered.

❗️STATEMENT FROM THE MATTHEWS ORGANISATION ❗️ It’s with deep regret and sadness that we have been forced to make the heartbreaking decision to end Reigate on ice indefinitely and the event will not be going ahead the reasons being after getting the go ahead in June to host the ice rink again but in a different location in the park to give the usual site a rest to recover from ground damage to which we always say we will pay for the repair but unfortunately the green spaces te...
