Restoration Pilates Description

What is Modified Pilates?
'Restoration Pilates', led by Johanna Debnam teaches Modified Pilates which was designed by Physiotherapist's in APPI (Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute) and is led by Physiotherapy trained Pilates Instructors, therefore providing a rehabilitative approach. This comprises working on your central core stability as the primary foundation for control of all other movements which APPI designed in clearly defined levels to ensure gradual standardised progression towards normal functional movement. Increasing core stability means improved pelvic stability and spinal segmental stabilisation, and this is based on scientific evidence from Erasmus University and the University of Queensland in Australia.

Benefits:
Regularly practising Modified Pilates leads to increased core stability, flexibility, muscle strength, endurance, postural and body awareness, balance, relaxation, whilst correcting muscle imbalances. It can also lead to reduced or removal of pain.

How Restoration Pilates is structured:
I assess each person for an hour which includes a medical, physical /postural assessment, teaching them how to engage their inner core correctly with anatomical explanations, other key elements for Modified Pilates and also home exercises to practise. I teach one to one sessions and also Matwork courses each half term. I modify exercises as required for each person.

Background on APPI:
APPI are a world leader in Modified Pilates. Many years ago APPI (Physiotherapists) took the 34 original Pilates exercises and created a clinical rehabilitation approach. This included modifying the original exercises to ensure they could be used safely and appropriately for everyone including those with pathology.

My story:
I worked as a Physiotherapist in the NHS for 13 years and specialised in neuro-rehabilitation, however I had increasing pain in my hands, wrists and spine from having hypermobile joints and being a Physiotherapist. I therefore trained with APPI in Modified Pilates as a change of career but it has also removed the spinal and other joint pain I used to experience!
