Airbnb to ban illegal long lets!
Many of the site’s London listings were let for more than the legal limit last year.
Airbnb has caved in to pressure by announcing a crackdown on landlords letting homes on its website illegally.
... The accommodation company said that from next month it would not allow homeowners to let entire properties for more than 90 days a year unless they had proof of planning permission.
The cap applies only to London but opens the door for other cities to impose similar rules.
In October The Times revealed that an increasing number of landlords were using the website to let their properties on short-term rentals, reducing the stock of housing in the long-term rental market and driving up prices.
Almost half of all Airbnb properties are offered by professional landlords.
In an email to its customers, Airbnb wrote: “We want to help ensure that homesharing grows responsibly and sustainably and makes London’s communities stronger.”
The American company revealed that almost 5,000 of its “entire home” listings in London, which make up a quarter of the total, were let for more than the legal limit last year.
Last month it emerged that Sadiq Khan had called executives from Airbnb to a meeting with local government officials to answer accusations that their business was driving up rents.
Airbnb denied contributing to higher rents in the capital but said that “pre-emptive action” was needed to ensure “sharing of entire homes does not contribute to the housing crisis in future”.
The company admitted that its entire home listings made up between 3 and 4 per cent of total housing stock in at least six central London boroughs, according to Andrew Ellson, Consumer Affairs Correspondent, The Times.
