About Retreats For You

Retreats For You is a writer's and artist's retreat, deep in the heart of the beautiful North Devon countryside. http://www. retreatsforyou. co. uk

Retreats For You Description

Every writer needs space. A place away from work, chores, family and other distractions, where they can be free to turn their creativity and thoughts into the written word. Deep in the heart of the beautiful North Devon countryside, nestling in a tranquil village, that space is waiting for you. If you’re struggling to find the time and energy you need to finish your novel – or indeed start it, I can help. We also have on hand constructive criticism on your work from working writers.

We offer quiet comfortable rooms in a large traditional thatched house with a huge woodburner log fire, cosy kitchen, a garden, and fast broadband wireless connection for your laptop. There’s a desk in your room, along with a kettle for hot drinks – but you may prefer to write downstairs by the fire, or in the kitchen, by the Rayburn. You can be as solitary or as sociable as you choose. And in the evenings, likeminded company often finds the solutions you need.

Homecooked meals, including homemade bread and wines are provided – either with us at the kitchen table, on a tray by the fire, or in your room. Fresh eggs straight from local hens, are on the menu for breakfast. The village pub is just 50 yards from the front door, and there are many delightful walks all around.

But writers aren’t alone in their need for space. We welcome anyone who needs some time out to write, paint, read, walk, think, meditate - or just sleep. We’re offering complete respite from life’s distractions. So that for once, you can focus on what’s really important to you. This is your time. We guarantee it.

Fab review from Jenna Wolfhart - she definitely wins the prize for most words written in a week here! What a brilliant way to end a year of reviews - now 73 in total and our marks are 5 out of 5! Let us know if you need to get lots of words written - there certainly seems to he something magical happening when people come here to write... info@retreatsforyou.co.uk
Jenna said on her review -... "This past week at Retreats for You has been absolutely fantastic. I felt so well looked after, and it provided me with so much time and freedom to focus on writing. I got a whopping 30k done! Add to that all the extra touches: a cozy roaring fire, wine o’clock, hot water bottles at bedtime, and of course, the two lovely labs who welcomed cuddles during breaks. I also truly appreciate Debbie and her team for more than accommodating for my dietary requirements. Delicious food and lots of it! I’ll be back in 2019!"

This was my 7th visit to Retreats for you, and my first since Debbie Flint took over. For people who have been before, very little has changed, the same nice touches, such as a warm welcome, a glass of wine at 6pm every evening and a hot water bottle in your bed every night. However, there are also some improvements, an overall of the heating system means that it's always warm and cosy now. Deb provided me with an air cushion for my chair so that is was comfortable for me to sit and write, the same cosy chats around the fire but the wood burner is cleaner and more efficient, the bathroom has been renovated with a nice big bath and shower. Wendy's cooking is marvellous, so the food is as good as ever. Altogether another fabulous week. I'm an academic and have completed my PhD at Retreats for you. I have another four weeks booked this year. I can't wait to get back.

User

This place is Heaven on Earth, and if Facebook would let me give it six stars I would.

This was my second visit to RFY, and it was just as marvellous as I remembered it. There is something about the house which is so inspiring - having written very little of my book for the last two years, I found myself typing away on the afternoon I arrived, and in my few days there I set up a new blog and wrote several thousand words of my novel.

Debbie and Wendy are wonderful hosts - the food is delicious, the fire inviting, wine o’clock is still the best time of the day and there’s a hot water bottle in your bed at night.

Not only did it give me the space to write, it gave me the chance to recharge from a busy job. Lovely beaches at Bude 30 mins away are a great writing break.

I cannot recommend RFY highly enough and I’m already looking forward to my next holiday there next year.

User

This is my last Morning at Retreats for You. I have been on a writers' retreat with Julie Cohen and I have found it so inspiring. The house is in a picturesque Devon village, and I have been on some lovely country walks - one with Debs who runs it and her two sweet and very gentle labradors Daisy and Gracie - she even let me borrow wellingtons! The house itself is beautiful, my bed was very comfortable and all the meals were delicious. Julie's tutoring was brilliant , the other writers really lovely people and the atmosphere was friendly and welcoming and supportive - what more could anyone want?

User

Thank you very much for a great week in April 2018. Perfect place to write. And walk along the river. Debbie and her team know what you need to have a great week here. Will I book again if I have the chance? In Dutch we say: 'Ja graag'

User

My third visit, this time under the new ownership, but I knew as soon as I walked through the door that it would be fine - the scent of candles, spice and just-baked bread - and then Debbie's warm welcome with a pot of tea and banana bread, and my comfortable unfussy room perfect for thinking/writing - no interruptions - bliss. I stayed for four nights. The company (no obligation) of the other guests was fantastic, and that of Debbie, Wendy and Linda too, who fed us and looked after us beautifully, the atmosphere homely, informal, peaceful. I am missing wine-o'clock already, and can't wait to return to the new Retreats For You as soon as I can.

User

My first Mon to Friday experience at Retreats For You .... and it certainly won't be my last.

Where to start, the location is idyllic with a leafy drive through country lanes to reach a fabulous old thatched building. The greeting was warm, friendly and very welcoming by Debbie, Wendy, Linda and not forgetting the 4 legged girls too! The room was spacious and spotless, facilities were excellent (inc the bathroom products on offer) and the bed very comfortable with a nice view over the village square. I immediately felt relaxed (which was the whole point).

The food .... well .... I don't have enough adjectives, it was fantastically good. All homemade inc the bread, snacks, yoghurt and meals made from scratch, I can't rate it highly enough.

I'm not a writer, I merely needed to recharge my batteries after a hectic few months of moving house and a busy work schedule and I cannot stress how a few days here has made such a difference and I now feel totally recharged and re-energised.

I also met some lovely people which is always a bonus!

This will be a regular trip away for me now... an annual pilgrimage!

I am so looking forward to coming back to visit. Thank you for providing such a gem to retreat to .

If you need to have some"me" time, this is definitely a good place to visit xx

User

Just returned from a fantastic Photography Retreat.

The expert photographer was friendly, helpful and planned a great day out on Dartmoor - I feel like I've learnt so much in such a short time.

The Retreat itself is excellent. The rooms are homely and comfortable. The food healthy and tasty (no cheeseburger and chips here). Don't let the lack of an en-suite (coming soon) be a deal-breaker, the bathroom is big, bright and very clean and a damn sight nicer to use than in many hotels I've stopped in. Debbie was our hostess, and couldn't do enough for us, her home was our home for the weekend. The dogs were lovely and friendly, but if you didn't want to play with them, they'd go away - but they're great foot warmers too. In the end, I was so relaxed I didn't want to go home :)

No better recommendation than that. Shame I can't give 6 stars !!

User

Just returned after an amazing 4-night stay at this fabulous place. The food was wonderful; healthy, nutritious, tasty and plenty of it. Loved my room where I found I could write, read and relax in equal measure. My one concern had been sharing a bathroom but I need not have worried, it was never a problem. Can't wait to go back. Thanks to Debbie and all her helpers who made my stay so comfortable. Home from home.

User

I’ve followed Debbie and Retreats for You for some time and been wanting to visit, so the Photography Weekend on 20-22 April was the perfect excuse for a short stay. The location was ideal for a retreat and I was given such a warm welcome of tea and cake. The weekend was fabulous both in terms of being so well looked after by Debbie who is a joy to be around, and Lee’s expert tuition whilst on our visit to Dartmoor. Although I would loved to have stayed longer and gained more photography knowledge, I felt I gained valuable experience in terms of getting to grips with my own digital camera and the editing techniques which can be used after a shoot.

Although small, our group had a fantastic rapport which added to the experience. I would certainly recommend a stay here where you’ll be well looked after, and also Lee’s tuition should you decide on a future Photography Retreat.

User

I’ve been running guided writers’ retreats at Retreats For You for several years now, because I think it’s a great, productive atmosphere for working with small groups of dedicated writers. From a tutor’s point of view, everything is taken care of for you, and you can concentrate on the business of giving workshops and coaching writers. One of my favourite parts of the day is when everyone gathers around the fire in the evening to share what they’ve accomplished. The house, and Debbie and her helpers, foster a spirit of trust and support.

Under their new management, the improvements have only added to the charm of the place, and exactly the same supportive environment can be found.

We’ve written thousands of words here over the years and I’ve had the pleasure of seeing a lot of those books published and on the shelves at Retreats For You.

User

I've written more than I dared hope this week at Retreats For You, supported by the peaceful atmosphere, lovely food and convivial company. The house and garden are in lovely shape. I'v particularly loved writing in the loft room in the garden.

User

I've just spent a week at RFY and it was fabulous. Everything is in place for you to just concentrate on writing or take time away from everything to just think and relax - fabulous home cooked food in a beautiful thatched house with comfy beds and a friendly welcome. I'm going to miss "wine 'o' clock"! I enjoyed walks in the surrounding countryside, popped out to the local yoga classes, jogged each morning along country lanes and visited the seaside close by at Bude for ice cream and a swim. I also got a lot of writing done. Thanks!

User

I've just spent a peaceful few days at Retreats for You. Lovely comfy beds, great food, welcoming hosts, sunny garden, resident friendly/cuddly dogs... what's not to love? Sheepwash is a pretty village with great walks and there is plenty to see and do if you want to get in your car and explore. And, if not, you have the peace and space to write, meditate, relax and just be! I would recommend RFY to everyone, do go, you won't be disappointed and you will be royally looked after and cosseted in a non-pushy way.

User

I've just returned from my second visit and my first with Debbie Flint at the helm, and the improvements have just made it even better. Lots of lovely spaces to work and relax in, comfortable rooms (with amazing beds- I slept so well!), and even more of a warm homely feel throughout. Amazing food by Wendy and Linda, every meal was a real treat. The improved heating is a bonus, as is better phone signal and wifi. The dogs are wonderfully gentle and no need to be apprehensive if you're not used to being around big dogs. I visited to work on academic writing, and came away having written everything I planned to and more, and felt refreshed and rested too. I'm already planning when I can fit in another visit!

User

I've just returned from 3 blissful days at Retreats for You. With some trepidation I took my young Labrador, Maddy. I was concerned I'd spend the whole time dog walking instead of writing. How wrong can you be! Debbie's two gorgeous girls Daisydog and Gracie welcomed Maddy with the same enthusiasm that Debbie welcomed me. The little touches were a bonus; hot water bottle at bedtime, a glass of wine at wine o'clock, gorgeous meals. Nothing was too much trouble. Maddy was blissfully happy all day long and so was I. We're home now and she's sitting in the kitchen looking lonely and crestfallen. I feel a bit the same...

Thank you Debbie, we'll be back.

User

I've just got back from a long weekend at Retreats for You. I was a repeat customer in its previous incarnation so I have to admit I approached this weekend with a bit of trepidation. I'm happy to report that while Debbie has made changes the central ethos hasn't changed one bit. I was pampered, fed and looked after. Importantly, wine o'clock is still a thing! There were lots of writers there so mealtimes were full of lively conversation. In between there was the solitude that I needed. Arriving Friday evening and leaving Monday lunchtime, I wrote around 6,000 words, did two sets of edits totalling eight chapters and spent some time restructuring my WiP. Which is the point of a retreat - the time and space to get your thoughts in order and words on the page! Thank you Debbie for a fabulous weekend!

User

I've just come back from five fabulous days at Retreats for You. Lots of the wonderful things I experienced there had been promised on their website - the fabulous, plentiful food, the time to write without distractions, wine o'clock (yes, I loved that!). Plus there was yoga (two sessions per day on our week there) and flowers and scented candles in my room. And the other Retreaters were fun, interesting people. But what I hadn't expected was how brilliant the one to one session was that I booked with Debbie. She is such an excellent mentor - she gave me invaluable, generous, helpful advice and had so much insight into what I was trying to achieve, and the best way of doing that. Wonderful! My session really made the retreat for me - thank you so much, Debbie! I left feeling empowered and invigorated, and I can't wait to come back!

User

Felt very well looked after by Debbie and Wendy at Retreats For You. It’s a great space to write or simply to refresh yourself/ re-charge - a peaceful and quiet location in a lovely house with good food and comfortable rooms. The company of other writers is there if and when you want it without pressure but the space to just write/think is what everyone goes for - a kind of ‘shared solitude’ which I felt worked well for me . Debbie was kind and generous enough to offer me another week when it turned out I could not make the week I first booked due to a car accident.

User

Debbie looks after you so well and the food is delicious, the bed really comfy and the room nice and cosy. Having time to just concentrate on my work means I achieve loads in a short time. Perfect set up for a great mix of alone time to write and social time to relax. Can’t wait for my next visit.
