Jay Ruckelshaus (Indiana & St John's 2016) is a DPhil candidate in political theory at the University of Oxford. His research examines the ethics of political disagreement and asks to what extent citizens holding divergent conceptions of what it means to live a good life must nevertheless endorse a common project. He is especially interested in political polarisation, and his thesis aims to sketch an account of democratic discourse that leaves room for principled disagreement while advocating for a more active, “republican” notion of civic participation. Jay hopes to use these insights to pursue a career in public service after Oxford.

Congratulations to Rhodes Scholar Rachel Harmon (Illinois & Hertford, 2015), who has recently been hired as the new Deputy Director of Talent Development for Birmingham, Alabama. Rachel has, for the first time in Birmingham’s history, been appointed to a role based solely on talent and workforce development for the city’s residents. She is excited to get to know Birmingham’s citizens, and help them develop their career goals. Read the full article here http://htl.li/iLvH30lwlO5

Carley-Jane Stanton (Prairies & St Anne's 2016) is an MPhil Candidate in Environmental Change and Management at the University of Oxford. She studies community resiliency and economic opportunism following natural disaster through the experiences of morel mushroom pickers in Fort McMurray, Canada. Morels are edible fungi which appear following massive fires in northern forests. In Fort McMurray, they were picked by locals as a means of emotional and community recovery from disaster, as well as by outsiders to sell to a lucrative international market. She hopes to demonstrate how economic opportunism post-disaster-- even in an innocuous industry like morel picking-- has the potential to limit opportunities for developing social capital within communities, something of critical importance in the face of climate change. #Rhodesscholar
