Put pencil to paper in a day all about drawing. Join us on 6 October for our annual celebration of architecture through drawing, with workshops and activities exploring different techniques, styles and practices. Whether you are a skilled draughtsman or a complete novice, there’s something for families, young people and adults alike.
Timed Activities: Create and Animate! (for ages 7+) Develop your drawings skills and see your drawings come to life, as you learn how to create ...an animation to show how buildings are constructed.
Explore and Draw (for young people and adults) Take a tour of the RIBA one room at a time and undertake a series of sketching challenges.
Drop-in Activities A Different Perspective, 11am-4pm (for families, young people and adults) Capture a moment in time of the RIBA at one of our drawing stations. Placed at different viewpoints, using specific materials, we invite you to take part in various challenges that will make you see things from a different perspective.
Scale Up or Down? 11am-4pm (for families, young people and adults) Play with perspective and create a drawing of a street scene to add to our evolving exhibition. Which buildings will you scale up and which will you scale down?
Acetate Cityscape, 11am-4pm (for families, young people and adults) Taking inspiration from our collection, look beyond the RIBA’s building to help us recreate the London skyline using sharpies on acetate.
Draw like an architect! (For families, young people and adults) We’ll be using the drawing tools of an architect to think about how to draw the plan, section, elevation and perspective of the space around you. Led by Dennis Austin of daab design architects.

#Didyouknow that the 'Ópera do Tejo' theatre in Lisbon, designed by Giovanni Carlo Galli Bibiena (1713? - 1760), only held three operas before it was destroyed by the 1755 earthquake, seven months after completion. My first time at RIBA and totally exceeded all expectations. A fantastic evening in this beautiful building and exceptionally well organised event

Article 25 event.

It's a great venue for a party with the lovely terrace outside the Florence Hall. The staff were very welcoming.

It is deeply distressing to see RIBA sucked into the propaganda anti-Israel hate machine. A propaganda campaign which does nothing to advance peace between Israelis and Palestinians, but instead demonises Israel while condemning Palestinians to a the state of permanent victimhood.

What is more concerning is that RIBA is in fact breaking the law. You are in direct violation of the Race Relations Act which defines Jews as a race. Israel as the Jewish State is the focus of your selective and highly discriminatory actions. This is unlawful.

It should also be unconscionable.

I urge you to apply your selective morality fairly and stop discriminating against Jews and Israelis.

Excellent family fun day at RIBA yesterday. Was lovely to see so many families learning and creating together. Thank you for a well organised event which was made better by the lovely surroundings. We will be back to participate in future events! 👍🏽

The Pseudo Georgian exhibition was very interesting, well laid out and not all intimidating. Fascinating commentary by the artist which was beautifully tongue in cheek at times. Interesting bookshop and much appreciated free past copies of A magazine. Needs to be more widely promoted, must cite Ianvisits blog for my knowledge of this. My only complaint was the cost of the book. If cheaper I would have bought it to visit some of the sites to contrast and compare.

User

I attended this event with an architect friend of mine.Really enjoyed the guided tour of the building. The talk on Elephant and Castle regeneration was not as we had expected it and the speakers were unclear not able to handle the Mike appropriately. No clear reason to create a Latin Quarter.

There are good architects and bad architects same in every profession. As I look around some UK cities I am appalled at the quality of design and use of material. Plymouth university of art for example, recently and in many other coastal cities or towns usual lazy design flat walls minimalistic Ethos. If it's because of cost and the usual client cutting corners then I apologies for my rant. But after all these years of experience why are we allowing the use of the product Parex. I'm driving past buildings 18 months old they look 20 years old, covered in green algae. New building estates look tired and old after a few years have we turned into a slapdash country-culture. And no one seems to be reacting to it ? Why are architects still using this product knowing the usual outcome?.

User

I can't speak for RIBA as an organisation but the event was a bit slack. It was far too hot in the room and a lot of the content was based on opinion which in my line of work doesn't cut it.

The proposed action by RIBA against the institute of Israeli Architects is misguided and based on a false premise. Julie Bishop (Australian foreign minister) had some sensible things to say in Jerusalem, as she broke ranks from a cosy, normally unexamined international consensus: the idea that, by permitting Jewish residence in the West Bank, Israel is violating international law.

Asked if she agrees Jewish communities located beyond the Arab/Israeli 1949 armistice lines are illegal, Bishop replied: "I would like to see which international law has declared them illegal."

Her reply has drawn attacks from perfervid Palestinian spokesmen - such as Palestinian Authority veteran official Saeb Erekat - who cite Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention. But what does Article 49 actually say?

Drafted to outlaw the horrors of Nazi mass deportations, Article 49 prohibits "individual or mass forcible transfers, as well as deportations of protected persons from occupied territory to the territory of the occupying power or to that of any other country, occupied or not". It ordains that "the occupying power shall not deport or transfer parts of its own civilian population into the territory it occupies."

''Transfer'' is not rigorously defined in international law, but it has an accepted meaning: it entails some form of compulsion. Yet Palestinians are not being deported from the West Bank to another territory. Nor are Jews being deported from Israel to the West Bank; they are moving of their own free will.

The West Bank, illegally seized by Jordan in 1948, captured by Israel following Jordanian attack in 1967, is unallocated territory under international law. Only Israeli annexation or an Arab/Israeli agreement could alter its status - neither of which have occurred. In short, Article 49 has no bearing on the situation, as it deals solely with sovereign territories.

The original international decision at the 1920 San Remo Conference earmarking this territory for Jewish settlement has never been superseded by an internationally binding agreement. The 1947 UN partition plan, which sought to create Arab and Jewish states, could have been such an agreement, but it was rejected by the Arab powers and Palestinian Arabs. Being a UN General Assembly resolution, the plan had no legal force of its own.

In contrast, the 1993 Oslo Accords do possess legal force, but as these contain no prohibition on the existence and growth of these Jewish communities, Jewish rights remain unimpaired. Whatever one's view of the conflict, all should be able to agree on this. Yet Erekat denies it, even though the Palestinian Authority he represents signed the agreements.(source Canberra Times).

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) passed a motion to suspend Israeli architects from the International Union of Architects (IUA). The stated goal of the IUA is to unite the architects of the world without any form of discrimination."

RIBA is a blind bunch of hypocrites and anti-semites.

User

The RIBA sent a cease and desist letter to a woman of colour who was simply speaking up about the institutional racism in the British Architecture. That is not ok. The RIBA needs to step up and address racism within the architectural institution - and not target women who are doing this ESSENTIAL work for them. Elsie for RIBA president

So you want to boycott Israel?

Think you'd better go back to using typewriters as your computers contain Israeli products, stop using mobile phones as text messaging was invented in Israel and don't use GPS as it's also and Israeli invention. I could go on for ages about everyday products that we all use so you might as well go back to the stone age seeing as your uneducated minds are already there.

To all those that say Israel is an apartheid state, you're even more uneducated. Israel is the only country in the Middle East that give FULL rights to all it's citizens whether Jewish, Christian or Arab to both men and women. You are all to small minded and too afraid to go there and see for yourself, why do 1000's of Palestinians go into Israel to work every day and rely on Israeli products if it's an apartheid state and ask yourself why the Palestinians themselves are not boycotting Israel?

All you believe is the brainwashed rubbish of uneducated people that hate the Jewish people, try looking up Pallywood and you can see the unedited news footage of how they fake what's going on in the real world. Go on, I dare you to educate yourself.

User

How truly pathetic that this so-called "professional" organization has chosen to speak in such a political voice to pronounce an anti-Israel position and exclude qualified and well-respected Israeli architects . Sadly,it has chosen to take the low road here to attempt to enforce their own personal political agendas. How does this "society" view the much greater human rights violations occurring by governments of other country's where its membership resides and works ? Is this "society" considering boycotting members from countries that made the 2013 Maplecroft Atlas of Countries having the worst records for human rights violations; such as Pakistan,Syria, Yemen, Nigeria, to name a few. Just for the record, RIBA has members who are associated with those countries and other countries having horrendous records of human rights violations. Coincidentally, Israel is not cited as such....so why single out Israel here.....smells fishy....is there some other ulterior motive involved here ? THINK SO !
