We couldn’t have had a nicer time at Rockfish and the food was delicious. I have never ever met such a friendly (and so friendly) team and I have owned a restaurant myself! Full marks, six stars and a “see you again soon” to you all 😘 PS we were on a return date after a very happy few months - we had our first date there!

Stumbled across it by accident after an evening seafront stroll. After having a quick nosey through the window decided it looked really inviting. Not disappointed, atmosphere, staff service and menu were all spot on. Great food freshly caught for a fair price. A hidden gem, will definitely be back.

User

Seems similar to Fishworks, Mitchell Tonks' earlier chain of restaurants but more affordable. Raw materials seem extremely high quality. We had fresh plaice and skate and they were excellent. It seems as though the service is still variable; the main waitress who served us was good but the others seemed a little less professional but they were all friendly and my assumption is they'll get the hang of it. Great views as well, so if you combine the views, the food and the ambiance then this is a great restaurant to go to. Sort out the staff and it could be outstanding [if you like fish :)].

User

Seated overlooking the estuary with fabulous views. Six of us including my two young children had a fantastic meal. Beautifully cooked fish dishes including the best calamari I’ve ever tasted. Kids packs a lovely touch. Staff friendly and very knowledge. A memorable evening for all the family.

User

Outstanding in all respects. Mussels (Moules Mariniere) from Brixham (the best ever, icncluding anything I’ve had in France). Seabream and haddock all caught and cooked on the same day. My boys (2 and 4) catered for beautifully and a view straight across the channel. Very welcoming staff and a choice of craft ale. We will be back! Thank you!

User

Outstanding food. Staff super friendly and really helpful. Best fish and chips we have ever had. Especially love the pickled onion rings!

User

Myself and my hubby had not booked a table but on the of chance we went it and can I say what an amazing experience we have had this evening. We where made to feel so welcomed even given a sea view which made our 1st date night in 2 years very special. The staff are very warm and friendly and food was so worth the wait. We will definitely be back again

I had the sprats for a starter, absolutely gorgeous, followed by fish of the day (Gurnard) which was lovely too. I also had a bottle of locally brewed beer which beautifully complimented the fish. They are very busy and I was lucky to get a seat; when I go back to Exmouth I will definitely book first.

User

Great service, our waitress was very attentive was there when we needed anything, we both had the cod and chips/ me cod with salad, great combo as partner had extra chips, the batter very light and crisp, was wonderful so wonderful I ate it, I often don’t as find it too filling.

Definitely a wonderful place to eat, great plus was the sparkling water included at the table to compliment the white wine.

Thank you so much for a lovely evening

After a day meeting friends and spending time on the beach in Exmouth we decided fish and chips for an early evening supper was called for. The food and service was great and the view not too shabby either! My wife and I had the Hake and my daughter had Haddock and we all had the Jalapeno Slaw - which was blooming marvellous. Local produce, great service & an awesome view, what more could you ask for.

User

Absolutely fabulous food. I had cod and chips and was the best I've ever had. My wife had the fish tacos which she loved. Would recommend this place in a heart beat. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable and not over priced for the level of quality....we will be back.

Absolutely LOVE this resturant have been to everyone we have seen and always had amazing food. Had a loyalty card once but lost it. Would be great if you did student discount instead but best fish

User

This place was lovely last night. We had lobster and lots of little bits of fish, we waited a while for the dinner but was given prawns to keep us going. We didn’t mind the wait, we were taking in everything that was going on, it was a shame we couldn’t see the sea from our seats (curtain stopped the view) but we booked again for Aug when we are back down that way.

User

Nice tasting food but really let down by poor choices of fish available- also overpriced!

We were 4 adults and a 10 month old baby last Saturday, we booked a table for 2pm, the restaurant wasn't full but we still waited about an hour to eat, when the food came, the baby was starting to get restless... I found the Menu quite different from the previous times we were there, the scallops, garlic bread and onion rings were amazing but the squid was quite rubbery. The plaice and the seabass were very nice, the seafood platter was nice too but last time I had it, it was all grilled and this time was all fried (this was a bit disappointing) the prawns were extremely disappointing, undercooked, couldn't even remove the shell, their backs weren't opened and the vein/intestine weren't removed... I was offered two choices: cook them a bit longer or cook some fresh ones but would take another 20 minute wait... We were all tired of waiting, especially the baby, so I opted to have them cooked a bit longer... The Staff were excellent, very accomodating, friendly and helpful, but I doubt we'll be back...

We have always enjoyed eating at Rockfish Exmouth, but on Sunday 17th June we had a very disappointing experience. Our reservation was for 19:15 and we sat down promptly. The menu and specials were explained to us; we asked for a few moments to make our choices. Unfortunately this is where things started to go wrong. No one returned to take our order, and after waiting 15 minutes we had to attract someone’s attention. We placed our uncomplicated order, consisting of three standard main meals (no sides or starters), water and two beers. After a further 10 minutes the bottles of water, minus glasses, were placed on the table. The glasses did not arrive as promised and after a further 10 minutes we again had to attract someone’s attention to bring some. We also pointed out that we had not received the beers; despite an apology there was no action. It was a further 10 minutes before these arrived - 30 minutes after ordering.

By this time we were becoming very frustrated by how slow the service was. We spoke to a very pleasant waitress called Hannah who was said how sorry she was and told us that she would call the manager immediately. The manager was apologetic but tried to blame the delays on how busy they were, although it was quite clear to see that the restaurant was not unusually busy. He said our meal was just ready for serving. It was now 20:15. As ever, the meal was excellent and we enjoyed it. The manager asked whether everything was ok, to which we replied that it was, although we had been disappointed by the extremely slow and inattentive service. As a gesture he offered us complimentary desserts which went a little way to compensate for the disappointment we had experienced with the service.

After placing our order for desserts at 20:45, they had still not arrived at 21:15 - nor did we receive any apology for the delay. How long should we be expected to wait for complimentary desserts in lieu of slow service? The further irony in this is that Rockfish’s own booking confirmation email states: “We respectfully require your table back by 9:00 PM”. At this point we gave up waiting for our desserts, and approached the till for the bill. The waitress called Hannah, who had been extremely pleasant and helpful, asked us was everything alright and we told her of our disappointment at the service. Hannah could not have been more sincerely apologetic and fully understood how we felt. We subsequently found out that she was new to the job and this was only her second shift. It says a lot when your best and most engaging staff member is your newest.

Rockfish Exmouth was once our favourite restaurant in the area and we have recommended it to many friends and family. However, it is unlikely that we will be returning in the near future. Despite us trying to address the issues at the time, we were not given any adequate explanation as to why we had to wait so long - instead the manager’s attitude suggested ‘this is how it is’, supplemented by weak excuses and no acceptance of responsibility. It is a pity that such a good restaurant should be let down by the quality and lethargy of service. In our opinion there were plenty of staff, but chaotic management.
