Rolle Centre Exmouth Description

Rolle Exmouth Ltd (REL) is a Community Benefit Society, owned and led by local people. REL was established in 2010 by community members in response to the economic and social impact of the closure of the Rolle College Campus.

Rolle College was closed by Plymouth University in 2007. This incredible site was once one of Exmouth's largest employers and educators - the closure of Rolle College cost the local economy £5m and reduced further education opportunities for young people in Exmouth.

REL and Exeter Deaf Academy to discuss opportunities to work together
Meeting to take place after sale of site
Exeter Deaf Academy and Rolle Exmouth Ltd (REL) have agreed to explore ways they could potentially work together.
... The move follows the announcement that the academy is planning a move from its current Exeter base to the former Rolle College campus site in Exmouth.
REL has been running a fundraising campaign to preserve the site as a vital community, education and business resource for future generations.
And board members say that the announcement this week by Plymouth University (which owned the site) that contracts had been exchanged took them by complete surprise
However, they have welcomed the chance to sit down with the academy’s senior team to discuss the potential for shared opportunities.
Deborah Hallett, REL Chairman, said: “After negotiating with Plymouth University for six years we were surprised, and upset, to hear about this deal at the same time as everyone else, including the media.
“Having said that, we welcome the fact that the Exeter Deaf Academy has acted so swiftly in agreeing to meet us to discuss ways that we might be able to work together.
“We have many shared goals and both have the interests of the community at the heart of what we do.
“This is an unexpected twist but we remain determined to find the best possible outcome for the people of Exmouth.”
Steve Morton, Director of Development at the Exeter Deaf Academy, said he and his colleagues were keen to engage with local groups.
He added: “We are very excited at the prospect of a move to Exmouth. An important aspect of our vision for the new academy is that it helps bring deaf and hearing people together.
“To this end we are keen to meet with the people and community groups of Exmouth. We would be pleased to meet with Rolle Exmouth Ltd to help us understand their aims and explore if there are any opportunities to work together.
“We both share a desire to provide an educational future for the Rolle site which benefits the town.”

Surprise, as Plymouth University agrees sale of Rolle College site to Exeter Deaf Academy
The Board of Rolle Exmouth Ltd (REL) heard today (1 September) that Plymouth University has exchanged contracts with Exeter Deaf Academy for the transfer of the Rolle College site to the Academy.
... Deborah Hallett, Chairman of REL, commented: “We will be trying to find out more about this unexpected development and we will be seeking an early meeting with the Board of Exeter Academy to understand the implications – whether positive or negative – for REL’s aspirations.
“REL were advised this morning (Thursday 1 September) by the Chair of Plymouth University, James Brent, that the University has agreed to sell their remaining site at Rolle in Exmouth to the EDA.
“We are disappointed to find that a contract has been agreed, apparently without reference to us, despite our very strong and long-standing interest and investment in the site, our ongoing negotiations with Plymouth University and our submission to acquire the site when it was offered for sale at the beginning of this year.
“The University has included elements of the REL proposals in its outline planning application for the site, which is currently with East Devon District Council for consideration.
“The University has required REL to undertake investments of volunteer time, shareholder capital and grant funding in the development of the University's planning application for the site throughout the last three years; including our most recent commitment to the Licence and Maintenance of the Owen Building.
“After six years of hard work and strong support from the community, the Owen Building is now coming back to life and is hosting start-up businesses and community use, which are two of the aspirations of REL’s community enterprise model. We are well on the way to delivering our vision so we would hope that this can still happen.
“It would be extremely disappointing and a blow to the community of Exmouth if the town were not only to lose the revenue once associated with the college, but also the facilities that many recognise as both desirable and indeed essential in the modern world. Any such loss would be a double whammy for Exmouth and a very difficult pill to swallow.
“We would hope that there is scope for REL to work with any new owner of the site in order that we can continue forging ahead with the plans that are now well advanced for community use of the Rolle Centre.
“We would certainly be willing to work with any new owner to find a mutually acceptable solution that served the interests not only of the buyer but also the town."
