According to newspaper reports, Louisa Gateway is where the body of Gertrude Chapel was found on the morning of 20 June 1897. I believe this is a reference to Louisa Bay, situated near Broadstairs’ Viking Bay as you walk from Ramsgate. I’ve walked this route so many times, through King George VI Park and along the cliff tops past Dumpton Gap. I wonder how many know about poor Gertrude’s fate as they pass by. . . #murder #truecrime #unsolvedmurder #whodunnit #louisagateway #louisabay #broadstairs #ramsgate #ramsgatetobroadstairs #broadstairstoramsgate #coastalliving #coastalwalks #beachlife #clifftops #clifftopwalk #visitthanet #visitramsgate #visitbroadstairs #thingstodo #fridaynightout #eastclifftour #eastcliff #weekendgetaway

It’s believed that Stephen Forward or Forwood aka Ernest Walter Southey stayed at The Camden Arms pub the night before he committed uxoricide and filicide. The day before he checked in, this miscreant had already carried out three murders in Holborn at the Star Coffee House on 8th August 1865. Five people were dead at this man’s hands in just 36 hours. It’s just one of the stories I recount on the East Cliff Tour. . . #murder #truecrime #murderstories #victorian #homicide #murder #uxoricide #filicide #guncrime #childkiller #eastcliff #eastclifftour #murdertour #ramsgate #holborn #londontoramsgate #beyondlondon #weekendgetaway #walkingtour #historytour #visitramsgate #visitthanet #pubsofinstagram #suspensestories #ramsgatehistory #thingstodo #fridaynightout
Who fancies moving into this building, which used to be a mortuary?
Anyone want to buy it for me?

The new polymer £20 note was released today. The back features JMW Turner and the lighthouse at Margate. Turner loved Thanet’s sunsets and seascapes with some of his most famous paintings based on Margate. But did you know he also painted Ramsgate’s Royal Harbour too? If you’re planning a trip to the Isle of Thanet, don’t forget to include Ramsgate in your itinerary. . . #£20note #polymer #newpolymernotes #jmwturner #margate #ramsgate #thanet #isleofthanet #thanetsunsets #sunsets #ramsgateroyalharbour #seascapepainting #lighthouse #londontomargate #londontoramsgate #weekendgetaway #beyondlondon @ Ramsgate Royal Harbour

I spent most of yesterday evening doing research and came across this article in the Illustrated Police News of 13 August 1887. Alfred Moody, a fly driver, was assaulted by his employer when Moody demanded payment for his employment. Less than five months later, Moody would be blinded for life and was never able to work again.

ON THIS DAY: c.280 AD, St Valentine was beheaded in Rome under the rule of Emperor Claudius II.
Happy Valentine's Day everyone ūüíė. Who's joining me on the special tour tonight?
Hot on the heels of ITV's White House Farm, a drama based on the massacre of Jeremy Bamber's family, comes The Ruth Ellis Files: A Very British Crime Story. Put a note in your diaries to catch this three-parter on BBC where filmmaker Gillan Pachter re-examines the 1955 Ruth Ellis case - the last woman to be hanged in Britain.
Last week I put out a couple of posts about the death of 16-year old Charles Wagner in 1882. It was reported that him and suspect James Walter took the last train from Victoria station. From the information I have access to, I don’t know whether this was the Granville Express or the slow train. What I can say is this is the published timetable that includes Saturday 2 April. Note that Saturday ran as a weekday service.
Thanks to the Isle of Thanet News for this write-up. It's going to be a fun evening ;-)

The discovery of the body of 16-year-old Charles Wagner by the Coastguardsman is the central illustration in the Illustrated Police News of 22 April 1882. Even though Wagner was thought to be alive at the time his body was found, he was put on a stretcher and taken straight to the mortuary in Broad Street ūüėĪ.
The "Penny Dreadfuls" such as the Police Budget and Illustrated Police News are a great source of reference for their pictorials. This one tells the explosive story of the Henson tragedy from 1903.
Charles Wagner Jnr went over the Eastcliff foot first and his body was found on the beach ‚Äúperpendicular to the Montefiore estate‚ÄĚ; what we now know as King George VI Park. There were neither railings at the top or promenade at the bottom of the cliff at the time of his death in April 1882, and when his body was found by the Coastguardman he was believed to still be alive.
Hear the details surrounding the death of this 16-year old visitor from London on Friday’s East Cliff tour.
