Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Description

Situated in the heart of England, Birmingham Conservatoire is a place where talent develops, individual creativity flourishes and successful careers begin – all against the backdrop of one of the UK’s greatest modern cities.

Our history as the conservatoire of the Midlands stretches back nearly 150 years, to our early development as the music department of the historic Birmingham and Midland Institute.

Today we are a thriving international conservatoire with over 500 students on undergraduate, postgraduate and research programmes, as well as a Junior department of over 200 students.

So that we can offer you the very best professional training, we ensure the continuous development and improvement or our programmes by constantly assessing and responding to the demands of the profession.

In return, we expect you to work hard, enjoy yourself and take advantage of all we have to offer.

In addition to being an international conservatoire, since 1970 we have also been part of one of Britain’s most proactive universities, Birmingham City University (formerly University of Central England in Birmingham), giving our students access to a range of benefits and opportunities few other music colleges can provide.

It’s less than a month away – make sure you’ve booked a spot for our Repertoire Orchestra on Fri 14 Dec! 🎶🤩
Conducted by the outstanding Daniele Rosina, the concert opens with two concertos for instruments lesser-heard as soloists with orchestras, performed by musicians from our Advanced Postgraduate Diploma course. The programme includes works from Andriessen, Villa-Lobos and Elgar’s Enigma Variations. Join us and uncover the enigma of Elgar's hidden melody, a puzzle which continues to generate much speculation. Tickets: https://bit.ly/2S46ahV

We’re nearing the end of our Birmingham International Piano Chamber Music Festival – can you believe it?! 🎶🎹🎵 Over the course of three days, we’ve heard from talented student musicians from across the globe, taking part in masterclasses with leading artists and performing public recitals, as well as celebrity recitals each evening (which we’re sure you’ve been enjoying from our Facebook live-streams!)
Today, there’ll be a series of student showcases at 1 and 4pm, then it’s be... time for the grand final at 7pm. Three young ensembles will play a range of chamber repertoire, with one being announced as the winner at 10pm in a spectacular end to a three-day celebration of music.
Tickets are available online or at box office – and if you can’t make it to us, you can watch for free via this Facebook page. https://bit.ly/2RS7PHc Who’s been your favourite ensemble so far? ❤️

Wonderful and truly inspiring place for our musicians of the future!

The staff at the Conservatoire were amazing - everything was set up before our arrival, nothing was too much trouble, and any changes were implemented in double-quick time. These same staff were discreetly available during the whole day, smiling and conscientious. The room itself - the Foyer Arena - was perfect for our activity, great size, extremely good acoustic, and near coffee bar and toilets. What more could we have wanted/needed?! Good luck with the forthcoming move to the new site!

The Duke Ellington gig was fabulous. How can young people be so talented? Lovely jazz club with a great atmosphere. A wonderful evening. I look forward to going again.

Stunning performance venue, superb acoustics, lovely hall.

Still miss my days there. Though the building I knew has now gone.

One of the best and most diverse places to study music in the United Kingdom. The number of courses and different faculties has expanded enormously since my days there as the Chamber Music Co-Ordination and Viola Tutor in the Junior Department. It was one of the first places to establish a regular tuition in Classical music for young people and I gladly took up an invitation to teach viola and later to take the charge of chamber ensembles. The are not many specialist music schools in the UK at a primary level as the majority of pupils take private lessons, well, the ones whose parents can afford the fees. It was so good that I continued to teach after moving to the South and travelling regularly by train every week for another two academic years.

A wonderful space for music making, probably the best in UK and beyond

A wonderful place to spend time listening to music. Amazing building filled with amazing students. Boult’s Bar has a fine ale plus beer, wine, sandwiches and a limited amount of hot food. The concert hall and recital hall are both excellent. I look forward to exploring the Jazz Club and the rest of the facilities in the years to come...

The old Conservatoire in paradise circus known as the school of music was a pigeon hole and acoustically very unsatisfactory. How on earth Students managed to make any music making is a miracle. it was also incredibly hot in the summer due to poor ventilation. So the new building is fabulous and spacious with everything laid out over six floors a café and ample natural daylight so students can move about freely and also enjoy practice time in plenty of practice rooms. I went to a event through the Birmingham Organists Association . We were greeted by the principal Julian Lloyd Webber and the head of music Daniel Moult. a Splendid evening was had by all and copius amounts of wine consumed many thanks for the hospitality. I wish the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire every success in providing first class teaching in this new building.
