Dignitaries, faith leaders and residents gathered at Woolwich Town Hall today to remember those killed during the Holocaust and in subsequent genocides around the world at our Holocaust Memorial Day commemoration ceremony..
Holocaust Memorial Day is marked on 27 January, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp. In addition to remembering the millions of victims of the Holocaust and Nazi persecution, It provides an opportunity to r...emember the victims of the subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda and Darfur.
Council leader Cllr Danny Thorpe gave a reflection, there were prayers and candle lighting by faith leaders as well as readings, poems and songs by pupils from Mulgrave primary school.
The theme this year is 'torn from home' about how the enforced loss of a safe place to call 'home' is part of the trauma faced by anyone experiencing persecution and genocide. You can find out more on www.hmd.org.uk

Local authorities can grant relief of up to 100% of business rates for certain organisations. These can be charitable or non-profit making organisations or any business as long as we have considered the financial impact on residents. We want to hear the views of local businesses and residents on the criteria we should consider when deciding who should benefit from business rates relief in the borough. Have your say before 1 February 2019. https://consultations.royalgreenwich.gov. uk/kms/elab.aspx…

Tell us your views on our plans to create a new conservation area in Woolwich!
Woolwich town centre is an important historic area and the council wants to protect its heritage. The suggested boundary includes Beresford Square, General Gordon Square, Greens End, Hare Street, St Mary's Church and Gardens, Thomas Street and parts of Calderwood Street, Wellington Street, Woolwich High Street and Woolwich New Road. Let us know your thoughts by 15 February 2019: https://www.royalgreenwich.gov.uk/woolwic hconservation

ūüƨWe could see adverse weather in Royal Greenwich over the next few days and there is a risk of widespread icy conditions.
We will keep you updated if this is likely to cause any delays with waste collections or street cleansing ‚ĚĄÔłŹ

Do you know an unsung hero making a big difference in the community? Then nominate them for a Civic Award. They could be a friend running a group for disabled people, a neighbour who always helps others, a remarkable young mentor, an inspirational sports coach, someone who has shown exceptional bravery, an organisation providing much-needed support or a lifelong volunteer. The list is endless. The Civic Awards are a fantastic way of recognising people and organisations making an outstanding contribution in the community. We want to hear about them. So get nominating!. https://www.royalgreenwich.gov.uk/…/nam e_and_fame_your_civi…

Holocaust Memorial Day is marked each year on 27 January, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp. This year we are holding our memorial event on Monday 28 January.
In addition to remembering the millions of victims of the Holocaust and Nazi persecution, Holocaust Memorial Day provides an opportunity to remember the victims of the subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda and Darfur.
The theme of this year’s Holocaust Memor...ial Day is 'torn from home' which encourages us to think about how the enforced loss of a safe place to call 'home' is part of the trauma faced by anyone experiencing persecution and genocide. It’s also encourages us to think about how we can support those escaping persecution today and who may be looking to make a new home in our own communities in Royal Greenwich.
The event is free and open to all Royal Greenwich residents and will include a range of readings and songs by pupils from Mulgrave primary school.
