Ask your midwife about hand expressing.
Did you know that being able to hand express is a really useful skill?
Hand expressing can be used to help attachment, relieve engorgement and sort out a blocked duct. It is also the best way to express colostrum (the first milk).
... We recommend that all breastfeeding parents are familiar with hand expression before they leave the hospital/their homebirth midwife leaves after birth.
However you are planning to feed your baby, they can really benefit from having colostrum as their first feeds.
Parents who are choosing not to breastfeed can still give their baby colostrum by collecting prior to their babyā€™s before birth and give it to their baby via a syringe.
Colostrum is made by the body from 16weeks and is constant reabsorbed and replaced until the breast milk comes in. This means that it can be hand expressed in pregnancy, without effecting supply at birth..
Studies suggest that parents who become familiar with their anatomy, and express prior to their babyā€™s birth have more satisfactory breastfeeding experience.
Any expressed colostrum can stored in small syringes. Oral syringes can be purchased online, at a pharmacy or for a small donation (min Ā£3 correct cash only) at our colostrum collection drop in.
Ask your midwife about hand expressing or come along to one of our FREE Colostrum Collection Drop In sessions
Guildford: Every Thursday afternoon in the Parentcraft Room, at the back of Antenatal Clinic.
Sessions: 14:00-14:30 14:30-15:00 15:00-15:30 15:30-16:00
Bordon: Most Friday's (see events)at the Forest Maternity Hub
11:30-12:00
At the Drop In a member of our infant feeding team will demonstrate, with models, how to hand express and talk about how to safely store it.

Do you know that we have devised a class specifically for experienced parents?
Our midwife led, Birth and Beyond Refresher, course has been designed for parents who have had a baby before and want to focus on updating their knowledge and adjusting to having more than one child.
Our four hour refresher course includes;
... What to expect second/third time around (when to come in etc)
What your options are for birth (homebirth, midwife led unit, delivery suite, pool room).
Ways of helping yourself (the 5Rā€™s, pain relief, pool birth).
Recap on baby care (bathing, safe sleeping, transition to parenthood etc).
We also look beyond the physical differences of having another baby and we discuss the transition to parenting two or more children and explore ways we can;
Prepare elder sibling for a change in routines,
Introducing siblings to the baby for the first time,
and how we can keeping them busy and entertained when the baby requires our attention ie during feeds
We look at;
preparing boundaries ie appropriate touching of the baby, not holding, carrying etc without supervision,
What to expect in the elder siblingā€™s behaviour and techniques for managing regression,
and we spend time thinking how our existing child may feel and easy steps we can use to help make the transition a positive one
Tour of the maternity unit included.
The cost of this course is Ā£75 and permits up to two adults to attend together.
We regret that we are unable to accommodate children on this course and you will be turned away with no refund given.

Hello my name is Jodie. Iā€™ve been a member of the Surrey Hills Home Birth Team since November 2017.
I was lucky enough to have some experience with the team as a student midwife and I fell in love with the continuity model of care. Iā€™m now lucky enough to work alongside some of the same amazing midwives.
I enjoy caring for women and families throughout every part of their journey, getting to know them and building a trusting relationship. My aim is to empower them to have a ...positive birth experience, individualised to their own wants and needs.
The team is an incredible place to work, providing continuity of carer has a hugely positive impact on the experience of those we care for, but is also greatly rewarding for those who are lucky enough to provide it.
If you would like to learn more about the team and birthing your baby in your own home come along to one of the teamā€™s informal forums (see Events) or contact the team to arrange a chat in the comfort of your own home rsch.homebirth.referrals@nhs.net

Hello my name is Heather and I have worked as part of the team at RSCH since 2015.
After rotating in the maternity unit I took a role as the named midwife at a local GP surgery, working the remainer of my hours in the MLU. This gave me a first taste of providing continuity as I was lucky enough to look after some of my community ladies when they came to have their babies in the hospital.
I moved to the homebirth team in April 2018 furthering the opportunity to build relatio...nships whilst caring for clients during their pregnancy, labour and afterwards.
Seeing a baby arrive into the world never loses its wonder and supporting women to birth at home is truly magical.
If you would like to learn more about the team and birthing your baby in your own home come along to one of the teamā€™s informal forums (see Events) or contact the team to arrange a chat in the comfort of your own home rsch.homebirth.referrals@nhs.net

The question to ask when thinking of which antenatal classes to attend is what do I want from antenatal classes?

ā€œI breathe my baby down with every surge of my bodyā€
Hypnobirthing is not about achieving a natural and drug free birth. It is about equipping mum's and dad's with techniques that may help them feel calm regardless of how they will be birthing their babies.
Alongside relaxation techniques and visualisation, hypnobirthing uses positive statements to help to create a relaxed minset around birth. These affirmations are found within hypnobirthing scripts but can also be adopt...ed as a positive mantra and repeated often outside of hypnobirthing ā€œpracticeā€.
To learn more about hypnobirthing techniques book on to one of our three hypnobirthing courses.
Birth and Beyond: Hypnobirthing* A Full day Hypnobirthing Course for mums and birth partners taught by experienced practising midwives and qualified hypnobirthing practitioners. Hypnobirthing teaches breathing, relaxation, massage and visualisation techniques. Hypnobirthing book and MP3 included in price.
Birth and Beyond: Complete* Our complete course features a two hour session taught by practising midwives and qualified hypnobirthing practitioners and builds upon the physiology taught earlier in the course. Includes breathing, relaxation, massage and visualisation techniques. Hypnobirthing book and MP3 included in course price.
Birth and Beyond: Hypnobirthing for Complex Birth* This class has been specifically developed for mumā€™s who want to learn techniques to keep themselves calm before, during and after the birth of their baby but who know their labours will require additional assistance/ support from medical staff ie. Twins Birth, Caesarean Birth, Induction of Labour etc.
Specific techniques/affirmations are taught that can be used to help you stay focused and relaxed in any birthing scenario, including birth in theatre or with an epidural.
Please not that this class is only taught once a quarter so book early to avoid disappointment.
Information about all of our classes can be found at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/o/royal-surr ey-county-hospitalā€¦
*If you have you a mental health diagnosis, these class may not be suitable. Please discuss with your Mental Health Team or Jasmine Team prior to booking.
We will be sharing a new #AfternoonAffirmation every Tuesday. If you prefer a hard copy you can purchase the Little Birth Companyā€™s Birth Mantra cards at http://bit.ly/BirthMantraCardsTheLBC

Hello my name is Caroline and I have been a member of the homebirth team since the end of 2015.
Iā€™ve always had an interest in physiological birth and in facilitating informed decision making and Iā€™ve been lucky to be able to utilise these passions. Over my seventeen year career I have worked predominantly within the community and the Midwifery Led Unit.
It was after the births of my second and third children at home, with Tanya as my named midwife, that I was inspired to jo...in the homebirth team.
I am extremely grateful that although I work part time I am still able to work within this amazing continuity model alongside some phenomenal women-mothers and midwives.
When Iā€™m not working within the continuity model I also enjoy providing evidence based information and supporting choice to the wider maternity population through facilitating antenatal education classes and creating content for the Maternity Facebook page, and our teams social media accounts.

This weekly drop in clinic, held at Forest Maternity Hub, is for Royal Surrey parents that would like to learn more about how to express and store colostrum in preparation for their baby/babies arrival.
Collecting colostrum can be really useful. Mastering hand expression during pregnancy could lead to an increased supply once your baby is born, it can give you some reserves to keep in the freezer, provide a store of gut priming colostrum for babies first feed if mum is choosing to formula feed, and research shows that those who have tried hand expressing in pregnancy are more likely to have a positive breastfeeding experience.
You are taught how to hand express on a knitted breast!
Open to all Royal Surrey Families including those who are planning on formula feeding.
This course is FREE, no need to book, just turn up for the 30min session. Colostrum collection storage kits available for a suggested donation of Ā£3 (Cash only. No change available).

Hello my name is Kirsty and I have recently joined the Surrey Hills Homebirth Team.
I have four children of my own and through my fourth pregnancy I was fortunate enough to receive one-one care with the same midwife from Booking through to Discharge. This made a huge impact on me, and although I had always wanted to become a midwife, this positive, empowering experience gave me the nudge I needed to undertake my training, enabling me to replicate this to those in my care.
...Being a member of a case-loading team, providing true continuity of care, enhances the perinatal experience for those we care for, as well as enabling me to support women in the choices they make, empowering them to birth their way. I love building these relationships with women and their families and I am passionate about working within this model of care.
