Royal West Of England Academy Description

The magnificent Grade II* listed building of the Royal West of England Academy Art Gallery (RWA) is open all year round. Built in 1844, it was Bristol’s first art gallery and boasts stunning top-lit art galleries described as among the best exhibition spaces in the country.

The exhibition programme includes a variety of shows, which appeal to all tastes from historic paintings to digital and new media and including painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture. The increasingly popular Autumn Exhibition is the largest open art show in the region. It includes all types of work, such as portraits, still life, abstracts, and landscapes most of which are for sale.

The RWA has its own collection of fine art, which it displays in exhibitions throughout the year. For an up-to-date preview of what’s on visit the RWA website.

We're delighted to have a small stock of Gaudier-Brzeska replicas in the shop! The original sculpture was thought to be one of the last before the artist's enlistment in the army at the outbreak of WW1. Handmade in Britain, these little beauties are a lovely addition to any art lover's home.

The only Royal Academy outside a capital city and quite extraordinarily magnificent. Having Papadeli in-house does no harm either.

The Strange World of Angela Carter: Riveting and disturbing exhibition- fantastically curated. Thank you.

Really enjoyed my visit to this Gallery. There was a great variety of art using different mediums and was an interesting theme. Also there is a concession price for students.

Mesmerising - the images continued to haunt me long afterwards...

If you've never been you're missing out! It's a must see and an essential arts institution in Bristol and the South West.

I went to the RWA exhibition yesterday and absolutely loved it. The standard was really strong this year - varied and diverse as ever. There were a few really standout pieces - the needlepoint woman's back, the china cup and milk jug, the big sculpture on the way in with the guy on top of the breezeblocks. Really good - thanks for the huge effort it must take to select and exhibit.

User

Great gallery space with some excellent exhibitions throughout the year. Went to the 'Air' exhibition yesterday that was very enjoyable with the added bonus of a summer concert playing whilst there.

User

Amazing place to sit and contemplate. Lovely friendly staff, very helpful when you are trying to move around with a pushchair and sleeping toddler.

Lovely to be with like-minded souls

Had a lovely time. Came for the bubble workshop but it was full so went into the Air exhibition. My 10yr old loved it and was chatting to the lady about the pieces. Shame the cafe isn't open at the mo but they pointed us in the direction of the university one next door which was great.

Experience shows drawing exhibitions can be too much of the same if they are not very well curated and not to much work. Drawing at The RWA is generally well curated with enough variation to make it an interesting show, it is very well hung and that contributes to it's accessibility. It has three or four stunning pieces, and it's these that make the show. It's a brave choice to show drawings from the RWA collection with the contemporary work, it works, although the adjacency does lead inevitably to comparison.

I thoroughly enjoyed the show and event and will return when the gallery is less crowded, PVs are not to see but to be seen.

Well done RWA.
