Rspb Dovestone

About Rspb Dovestone

Dove Stone, bordering the Peak District National Park, is managed by the RSPB in partnership with United Utilities. Together we’re working to enrich the habitat at Dove Stone with the aim of increasing the diversity of the estate’s wildlife.

Rspb Dovestone Description

Dove Stone has a range of habitat including moorland, internationally important and nationally scarce blanket bog as well as native deciduous woodland with trails around the estate's reservoirs.

Dove Stone supports a range of wildlife and is home to characteristic birds of the area such as Raven, Ring ouzel, Peregrine, Golden plover and Dunlin as well as a good range of woodland birds. And it’s not just birds. Dove Stone also has a significant population of Mountain hare and is one of the few places in the UK where you’re able to see this lovely animal outside of Scotland.

Don't forget this is on tomorrow.
Dove Stone Redwing & Fieldfare Survey
Sunday January 13th at 11am
... meet at the main car park
Join us on a survey of Redwing & Fieldfares
We'd like to find out a bit more about the numbers of Redwing & Fieldfare from northern Europe that spend the winter in the UK.
How many visit Dove Stone? What feeding behaviour can we observe? What changes are there over successive winters?
The information we gather will be part of a UK wide survey that will contribute to the conservation of these birds.
Why not come along and find out a bit more about these winter visitors and learn a bit about survey methods too !
There’s no need to book, but if you’d like more info please contact
Rachel on 0782502263
For those not local to Dove Stone. It's only a short train journey from Manchester Victoria station to Greenfield and then a 20 minute walk.

Let me know if you’d like to book on and look forward to seeing you there! Join us on a talk and walk all about Mountain Hare. As Mountain Hare moult into their white winter coat they really stand out against the dark gritstone characteristic of this area at this time of year. There may also be the chance to see other wildlife typical to this area such as Red Grouse. There's also the opportunity to learn more about the RSPB’s and United Utilities restoration work on the peat bog and how this contributes to the conservation of Mountain Hare. The talk is at the Clarence Pub, Greenfield (just at the bottom of the road up to Dove Stone) at 12 noon. You can also just join us for the walk at Dove Stone's main car park at 1.30pm if you prefer. To book your place please email Mandy ; Mandy.Hodkinson@rspb.org.uk or call her on 07703716987.

You may have heard about the influx of Waxwing to the country, and two were spotted yesterday in a garden in Mossley! SO we’ll be having a ‘make a garden feeder for Waxwings’ day on Saturday, starting at Binn Green at 11 and moving to the main car park for 2pm. These really are stunning birds so if you fancy coming along to make a feeder specifically for them to hang in your garden then come along on Saturday, and we’ll be doing the same thing on Sunday at Ashway Gap from 11 am
