We reckon all our expedition skippers use the same 10 key techniques for just about all their navigation. We've wrapped them up into a weekend course taught by the esteemed Rachael Sprot on January 26-27 2019 in Portsmouth, UK and it's only £199.
A brilliant opportunity to move beyond usual sailing school theory and learn how we do it on our expeditions. Real world, practical skills and techniques, including the apps and websites we use, and the stuff we never do (course to steer anyone?) This is the stuff you need to know. The new crew of Oriole have all arrived into Cadiz and were greeted with a Mediterranean style lunch while we got to know each other. Once the sun went down, we all wondered to the centre of the old town were we were lucky to be part of the big parade to greet the three kings into town. Cadiz was boiling with people so it was agreed that a sponge-bob balloon was necessary to keep us all safely together to get to our Tapas place. At the end we managed to reach destination, ...The Adobo, who have been taking care of us lately and who cooked an amazing fresh fish thanks to the help of our Skipper Brian! So far so good and is only the first day!

EXPLORING CUBA WITH RUBICON 3: CUBAN FOOD
It’s part three of our focus on Cuba and a look at what we can expect to eat in this magical country on our forthcoming expedition there in March.
We still have three spaces so don’t miss out. The expedition runs for two weeks between March 02 - 16th, it’s fine to join solo and the price of £2,250 is all inclusive of food, on board accommodation, equipment and training. We can currently find very cheap return flights (often as low as ...£400) so do email to get a price (bruce.jacobs@rubicon3.co.uk). Expedition page is here https://www.rubicon3.co.uk/adventure-sail ing-holidays-cuba.…
Cuban food is called comida criolla and is very simple but delicious. This is partly because many ingredients are hard to come by due to economic difficulties and various international embargoes, but also because that is simply the Cuban taste. They are not great fans of rich or spicy food, preferring instead cheap, fresh and hearty meals.
The absolute staples are roast or fried pork and chicken served with rice or beans and viandas (root vegetables). Once we have arrived in Cuba, you can expect to see gorgeous dishes such as ropa vieja, which is a shredded beef in a stew. It is cooked for a long time over a low heat with green peppers, tomatoes, onions and garlic
Ajiaco is another wonderful meat stew that has many regional varieties, but combines meat, corn and usually some green vegetables. There’s also Tasajo, a form of fried dried beef. And Lechón, or suckling pig, which is marinated in garlic, onions and herbs before being roasted. Any other meat or seafood is frequently cooked enchilado, which means to be in a tomato and garlic sauce with chilli.
An absolute must at almost all Cuban meals is rice and black beans. These can be served as Congrís, where the rice and beans are mixed together (also called moros y cristianos), or Arroz con frijoles, where white rice is served with a separate bowl of beans cooked as a thick soup, all of which is hten mixed together. Other traditional Cuban side dishes are Yuca con mojo (Cassava cooked in an oil and garlic sauce), fried plantain, fried green bananas, Boniato which is a type of sweet potato; and maybe a simple salad. Seafood is also very popular in Cuba, and you will find wonderfully fresh lobster, shrimp and fish. The question is: how many of these will you try to cook onboard?

EXPLORING CUBA WITH RUBICON 3
Didn't catch the big Rubicon 3 / Cuba article in December's #yachtingworld? Every day this week we're taking a look at different aspects of what you can expect on our forthcoming Cuba Explorer expedition (it's in March). CUBA: COLONIAL CITIES IN A MAGICAL TIME WARP Cuba's cities haven’t changed much since pirates roamed the Caribbean, hunting for treasure with loaded muskets. They have have amazing central squares, tropical gardens, cobbled streets and buildings with vast balconies and unique histories. Join us on this expedition and you will sail into three of the country's finest.
CIENFUEGOS You'll join the boat in the so called 'Pearl of the South'. A true nautical city founded by the French back in the early 19th Century, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. There is just so much to see and do here.
TRINIDAD Another gorgeous, brightly coloured city and another UNESCO site. This is a city that looks not dissimilar to how it must have done in the 19th Century. The city made its money from the huge sugar plantations nearby and the memories of its past wealth is still there to see. A magical. magical city.
HAVANA You could never go to Cuba not visit the capital. This is where our expedition ends, so you are guaranteed a good visit! A city of classic American cars and salsa, revolution and history. We could spend a month here and love it - you just have to know where to look to find it’s truly special heartbeat
Coming up tomorrow - the incredible islands we'll visit just off the Cuban mainland.
Reserve one of those berths before they're gone!

Goodbye 2018
As the sun sets on tis year we just want to say wow what a year that was. So many adventures and true memories of a lifetime. Incredible downwind spinnaker runs, tough old up wind beating into some ferocious winds and seas, slopping around in dead calms and hiding from storms in little coves. Every year we watch a group of strangers come together to head to sea, nervous and unsure of what to do. Over two weeks they develop into superb friends, trusted crew mates ...and often show themselves to be really quite inspirational people. It is by far the most rewarding part of what we do and long may it continue. This year you've sailed with us to Morocco, the Canaries, Spain, France, Portugal, the Azores, Norway, the Faroes, Spitsbergen, St Lucia, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, the BVIs the USVIs, Jamaica, Honduras, Belize, the USA and so many more. We've also crossed the arctic circle four times and sailed the Atlantic four times.
Thank you all for being part of it.

Was there for the very first trip in 2014, London, UK to St. Petersburg, Russia! It has been fantastic watching Rubicon 3 grow and revisiting on their very educational Ocean Masterclasses. Will always recommend and wish to return on other adventures.

The most adventure one can have without having to own a 60ft yacht!

Patient skippers, lovely boats really well looked after. Thoughtfully planned trips, proper food not 'boat food'. I wept with laughter every day. I booked my next trip immediately and it's now less than a year away. Thanks, guys, you're amazing.
